Recap / Mighty Max S 1 E 3 Snakes And Laddies

Go To

Max and Bea accidentally end up in an Egyptian tomb thanks to his cap. While there Max steals an ankh necklace to give to his crush, only to find out the mummy priest it belongs to wants it back...

Tropes:

  • Buffy Speak: Bea, at seeing a giant whirlwind of sand dropping robed snake monsters onto the street.
Bea: It looks like some sort of... inter-spacial travel thingy!
  • Bribe Backfire: Max tries to get back into the museum after hours to take the portal to Egypt by bribing the security guard... with one dollar. It doesn't work very well.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: This episode would have been only half as long if Max hadn't decided to steal Venom's ankh as a gift for Jiffie.
  • Genius Ditz: Jiffie. She's excellent at academics, especially math, but is otherwise a textbook case of Dumb Blonde who is always Comically Missing the Point. Because obviously the most important issue when you're being carried away by evil snake monsters is the cover of your favorite textbook getting damaged.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Venom answers to Apophis, the Egyptian snake god of chaos and the enemy of light and truth.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Max gets angry at Bea for screaming about a rat and "sending him into a panic". Immediately afterward, he screams at spotting a skeleton chained to the wall, which Bea naturally calls him out on.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: Max spots a golden ankh in an old tomb and immediately decides to snatch it to give to Jiffie.
  • Nepharious Pharaoh: Venom, mummy cult leader and "last of the ancient pharaohs".
  • Noodle Incident: Bea and Felix know all about Max's cap and legendary hero status already somehow, and seem pretty chill about it. When she and Max end up in an Egyptian tomb all of a sudden, Bea's reaction is annoyance more than anything.
  • Skewed Priorities: All over the place. None of the group seems to care that much about defeating Venom. Max is more worried about getting Jiffie's attention, Bea is motivated by her jealousy of Max and getting the demerit on her class record erased, and Felix is... just sort of there. Even Jiffie is more concerned with all the studying she has to do than the fact that an ancient mummy is about to kill her and steal her life force.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Venom's little cult is made up of snakes that somehow walk around upright, and the idol in their temple's a snake too. That comes to life at the end of the episode to chase down Max and his friends.
  • Some of My Best Friends Are X: Played for laughs. When Max freaks out at seeing a skeleton chained to the wall and is reminded by Bea that there's nothing to fear from something that's dead and inanimate, he tries to play it cool saying that some of his best friends are skeletons.
