Recap / Mechamato S1 E4 "Amazeey's Labyrinth Challenge"

Go To

In the school library, Mr. Jamie ponders introducing his students to robotics when the door and the windows suddenly slam shut. He slowly approaches the light of a large hexagonal screen, on which a robot bids him welcome and laughs. As the time for class approaches, the students stand to greet the teacher - only for Amato and MechaBot to enter within minutes of the time. To everyone's surprise, no one enters, and the PA system announces that Mr. Jamie will be late, which the class agrees to be uncharacteristic of him. Mara decides to go find him, but the boys attempt to distract her, and Amato shows her his newly upgraded Mechaniser. He notices a bad robot has been detected in the library, so they all go there (except for Pian, who heads off to the restroom).

Shortly after Amato, Mara, MechaBot and Deep enter, the door and windows are suddenly sealed shut. A hexagonal screen descends from two parted roof panels, and the robot Amazeey introduces himself and his game show. Rubika explains that Amazeey has the ability to make complex mazes to trap anyone caught inside. Mara asks Amazeey if he trapped Mr. Jamie, and he displays their trapped teacher, the latest contestant in his challenge, and telling that the 4 of them about to become his next contestants. They are briefed on the first challenge, to find the right library book, with their only clue being a secret.

At one point, the bookshelves close in on them, and Mechamato tries to maintain space between them so they don't get crushed. Mara finds the right book in time, explaining that the title is in fact "Shh, (It's a) Secret". Amazeey congratulates them and lets them leave the library, only to turn the rest of the school into his labyrinth. To navigate the complicated walls, Amato has MechaBot use some class furniture to become the Mechaspider. Amazeey takes notice that they skipped some challenges, and stops them from cheating by opening a trapdoor under their vehicle, forcing the 4 of them to consecutively undergo some challenge rooms before they finally close in on Amazeey's location.

The room brightens to reveal itself as the gym, and Mr. Jamie and Pian are bound together and descending towards a pool of acid. Mechamato has one minute to clear an obstacle course to get to them, so he uses exercise equipment to become Mechamonkey, with the animal's agility and flexibility. Instead of hitting the button to end the challenge, Mechamto throws an exercise ball at Amazeey, despawning his obstacles and the acid pool. Amazeey takes his defeat in stride and compliments the hero for being the first to beat his game, before Amato captures him in the Mechanizer. Later in class, Mr. Jamie looks out the window, hoping to see his saviour again someday. Pian, Amato and MechaBot tell him that the latter two are that superhero, which Mr. Jamie still doesn't believe and has them stand in the hall while holding chairs above their heads.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Acid Pool: Amazeey slowly lowers Pian and Mr. Jamie, both blindfolded, tied-up and upside-down, towards a pool of acid which replaces the gym's stage.
  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Amazeey's final challenge which takes place in the gym is called the "Athletic Agony Challenge." In Malay, it's called "Cabaran Seksaan Sukan", which means "Challenge of Torturous Sports."
  • Animal Mecha: Two mechanizations in this episode are animal-themed. The Mechaspider is a Spider Tank made of class tables, chairs and bins that can use its arms to cross between vertical and horizontal platforms in Amazeey's topsy turvy maze. In the final challenge, Mechamato dons a helmet while combining himself with cones and baseball gloves to become "Mechamonkey" giving himself monkey-like features (including a jump rope for the Prehensile Tail) to clear Amazeey's obstacle course.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: When Amazeey subjects Mara, Amato, Deep and MechaBot into his first challenge, he says, "May the best contestant... lose!"
  • Exact Words: Amazeey's "Swiftest Mind Challenge" is to find a specific library book. When asked what book it is, Amazeey says "Shh, it's a secret." Later, Mara remembers a book with Amazeey's exact reply phrase as its title and finds it in time, winning the challenge.
  • Graceful Loser: Amazeey is happy that the heroes bested his challenges, considering their victory truly amazing. Amato figures that Amazeey's gone cuckoo.
  • Hope Spot: Amazeey lets Amato, Deep, MechaBot and Mara out of the library after the first challenge, and the first three celebrate upon escaping. Then Amazeey reveals that he turned the whole school into his maze.
  • Indy Escape: Amazeey's "Rolling Globe Challenge" has a giant model of Earth rolling down the staircase the main characters are on, and they evade it by running down as fast as possible.
  • Meaningful Name: Amazeey points out that his "Swiftest Mind Challenge" is called that because they're on a time limit, which he only makes clear when the bookshelves start closing in.
  • Split-Screen Reaction: Two in this episode. When Mara suggests that they look for Mr. Jamie, their oddly absent teacher; Amato, Deep and Pian's shocked faces are shown in respective panels on screen as they exclaim "SAY WHAT?!" in unison. Then in the library, when Amazeey announces Mara, Amato, Deep and MechaBot as the latest contestants of his labyrinth challenge, each of the four's troubled faces sequentially slide into frame in vertical panels.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Although he thanks Mechamato for saving him, Mr. Jamie still doesn't believe that Amato and Mechamato are the same person and has him stand in the hall while holding chairs above his heads (along with MechaBot).
  • Unrealistic Black Hole: One of Amazeey's challenges has Amato, Deep, Mara and MechaBot endure a black hole in a room, which they manage to escape.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: Amazeey's first labyrinth challenge has Amato, Deep, Mara and MechaBot require to find the correct book while the library shelves gradually close in on them until they do so.
