Recap / Mechamato S1 E3 "Rubika Defense System"

Go To

A spacecraft identifies debris from the crash-landed prison ship. On Earth, Pian watches the news about the worsening cases of robot incidents in the past week, while Amato looks elsewhere with binoculars. He finds the culprit behind a recent string of door thefts, Goosar, the robotic goose who's made a nest out of them. Amato leads the goose into a chase to trap it, but fails to secure it because MechaBot is distracted. After they get blasted into a building square, Amato uses MechaBot as a tank to take down Goosar. They succeed, but MechaBot takes a hit in the fight.

After discussing that there are too many robots to fit in the garage, MechaBot becomes erratic and fatigued. Amato and Pian see his draining battery on the Mechanizer and take him to the space prison. They find a glass door to the hallway that leads to the repair room, and a robotic voice asks for identification, which Amato gives by pushing MechaBot's face against the screen. While they are granted entry, the voice rejects the input and shuts the door between Amato and Pian. A series of large arms spawn in the hall to stop Amato from getting to the repair room.

Pian demands the door blocking him to be opened, but he backs away when it does open and the large hand invites him in. He instead throws cleaning supplies inside for Mechamato to combine with. The hands assimilate into a technological being that marches towards Mechamato. Pian tells him to shoot the security camera at the ceiling to stop it from tracking him. Despite MechaBot's deteriorating state, the camera is hit, disorienting the security system and opening the doors. However, the walking system feels around for Mechamato and strikes him into the repair room.

MechaBot says his systems are going critical, and Amato rushes him to a charging station. The robotic entity says "Rubika System: Transform!" and the hallway rumbles as white blocks come off the walls to enlarge himself. Pian yells in warning to Amato, and he turns to find a large robot about to attack him. However, he yells for him to wait so he can save his friend first. The robot is surprised to learn his true intentions. MechaBot speaks briefly before deactivating, as Amato tries to shake him awake.

Later, in the garage, Amato and Pian are happy to see MechaBot wake up. He's terrified to see Rubika looking down at him from the hole in the roof, but the boys explain that he helped repair him. Rubika detects the other prisoners, and they tell him how they captured them, much to his delight. He then requests they help capture all the escaped robots, and asks for the Mechanizer to be presented to him. Rubika downloads himself into the device to act as a guide and give it many more functions, one of which is to capture bad robots inside of it, freeing a lot more garage space. Rubika wishes Mechamato well on his next big mission, and Pian wonders if he can also get a mission. Rubika replies that he will be Amato's assistant to help oversee the captured robots, which pleases Pian.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Pian yells for Rubika's hand to let go of Amato and open the door which was blocking him, but it opens instantly afterwards. The giant hand drops Amato and invites him in, but Pian just nervously backs away.
  • Destroy the Security Camera: Pian suggests attacking the security camera on the ceiling to stop Rubika, the prison ship's defense system, from tracking Mechamato. Doing so temporarily blinds and disorients Rubika, but he can still feel around to find Mechamato and attack him.
  • Faint in Shock: In his part of the Flashback Cut, the scarecrow robot is shown to have been going around scaring people, having caused at least Pian and a woman to faint this way.
  • Flashback Cut: After Sejuku, there are three more robots imprisoned in Amato's garage. They try to persuade Amato to let them go, but Amato responds with "Did you forget all that stuff you guys did?", and three brief successive flashbacks showcase the mischief that they were up to while Mechamato was fighting them.
  • Glitch Episode: MechaBot's battery gets damaged in a fight, causing him to go loopy and fatigued. Amato and Pian bring him to the crash-landed prison spaceship that he came from to fix him.
  • Shapes of Disappearance: Pian and Amato find Goosar, the robotic goose who's been stealing people's doors. They catch sight of it from a distance with binoculars, but after Pian gets his turn looking through them, he looks back to his right, but all that's left of Amato is a red blinking dotted outline. Pian uses the binoculars again to see Amato advancing towards Goosar.
