Recap / Martha Speaks S 3 E 10 T Ds Magic

Go To

Helen and Alice are playing fetch with the Lorraine dogs in Helen's front yard, when T.D. approaches with a stack of books. Helen asks why he's carrying them and T.D. explains that it's C.D.'s birthday in a few weeks, the party is at T.D.'s house, and he promised to do a magic act and is doing research.

Later, Martha visits the Kennellys, and T.D. learns the "coin from ear" trick with her, but thinks it's not impressive enough. O.G. suggests he could help him, but a week later, Helen says that maybe the act shouldn't be more impressive, but instead more "T.D.-ish". They, along with Martha, go to the Kennelly house, and O.G. reveals a stage he built. He uses it to make Martha "disappear" behind a revolving wall, but T.D. wants to do it with something bigger, so Martha retrieves Jeffy from the zoo.

On the birthday, T.D. does several comedic tricks, then he does the disappearing trick with Jeffy. However, after the party, Martha and T.D. can't find Jeffy. They search, along with Helen, Alice, and Truman, but can't find him. They decide to split up and search the town, and T.D. and C.D. search together on the street. C.D. thinks that T.D. has literal magic and tells him to change the traffic light to see if he does. At first it doesn't work, but it changes when he says, "Peanut butter!" (the magic words that O.G. taught him), so now both boys are convinced T.D. has magic.

At the corner store, C.D. tells T.D.'s friends that T.D. is "magic" and explains about the light, but Truman rudely dismisses it. However, the friends have still not found Jeffy yet, which T.D. thinks is proof he's magic. Meanwhile, a man notices his fridge door has fallen off, and his son Milo claims it was the elephant who followed him home, but his father thinks he's lying. However, it turns out that Jeffy did follow Milo home.

Meanwhile, T.D. tries to prove he has magical powers by doing something impressive at his house. At Milo's house, his father is still doubtful about Jeffy's existence, but then he sees him. It's then revealed that Jeffy left the party early because he was bored and then followed Milo home.

In T.D.'s yard, he shows his friends a sweater and decides to put it on, then hang upside down with his hands tied together and escape within one minute to prove he has magic. However, he has trouble even putting it on. Meanwhile, Milo, his father, and their dog Lily try to return Jeffy to the zoo.

Back in the Kennellys' yard, T.D. fails to do the sweater trick, so his friends suggest making Jeffy appear. However, as expected, it doesn't work. However, when Jeffy hears T.D. yelling, "Peanut butter!", he takes it literally and walks up. Meanwhile, Milo's father is trying to explain about the elephant to the police.

This episode provides examples of

  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Even though Martha can talk, Truman finds the notion of magic "irrational".
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: Milo's father says, "Forgive me if I'm a bit dubious when you say there's..." and then he sees Jeffy and yells, "AN ELEPHANT!".
  • Birthday Episode: On C.D.'s birthday (presumably turning five, since he was four on his last appearance), T.D. does a magic show with Jeffy the elephant and accidentally loses him.
  • Blind Mistake: T.D. accidentally collides with the fence when trying to put on a sweater that was obscuring his sight.
  • Buffy Speak: Helen suggests T.D. make his magic act more "T.D.-ish".
  • Character Development: When C.D. was first introduced in "Martha and the Doggie Lover", he couldn't stop glomping Martha. By this episode, he seems to have grown out of the behaviour.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When the kids and Martha can't find Jeffy, Alice suggests looking in the grass, even though Jeffy is an elephant.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: When T.D. says he wants his magic act to make everyone go "Wow!", Martha replies, "I said, 'Wow!'. That's what I said. 'Wow!', I said."
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • Milo, for the longest time, is the only character to realise that Jeffy is in his house, while his father is clueless as to how the fridge door keeps falling off, and the other kids and Martha are searching for Jeffy. Even when Milo's father realises Jeffy exists, the other kids and Martha still don't know where he is.
    • At the end, T.D.'s friends are convinced he's magic, when we viewers know that Jeffy only came because he heard the phrase "peanut butter".
  • Fantasy Sequence: T.D. imagines using real magic as a magician at C.D.'s birthday party.
  • Flashback: One scene explains how Jeffy followed Milo home.
  • Fun with Homophones: When T.D. says he will perform a "feat" of magic, he says, "Not feet like you have on the ends of your legs".
  • Homemade Sweater from Hell: T.D. reveals that his aunt E.B. made him a really itchy sweater.
  • Latin Is Magic: In T.D.'s imagination, he uses "vendi vidi vici" as a spell to levitate his house.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: After failing to find Jeffy in the Kennellys' yard, the kids and Martha split up to search for him.
  • Literal-Minded: When T.D. yells, "Peanut butter!", Jeffy thinks there really is some on offer.
  • Mind over Matter: T.D. imagines having telekinesis and using it to move his house, some cupcakes, and O.G.
  • Mistaken for Superpowered: When Jeffy goes missing, C.D. thinks that T.D. used literal magic to make Jeffy disappear. Then, when the traffic light changes after T.D. says, "Peanut butter! Light, change!", he thinks he really does have magic.
  • Psychic Powers: Discussed when T.D. said one famous stage magician appeared to be able to read minds.
  • Slapstick: Martha accidentally knocks over T.D. while he's carrying a stack of books.
  • Snark Ball: The usually mild-mannered Truman is very rude and snide to T.D. in his doubt of T.D.'s alleged magic.
  • Stock Animal Diet: Jeffy steals peanut butter at Milo's house and is attracted to T.D. yelling, "Peanut butter!".
