Recap / Martha Speaks S 1 E 40 TD Makes The Band

Go To

In the Lorraines' kitchen, the Lorraine kids, T.D., and Martha are listening to a song. Martha and Jake enjoy it, but Helen and T.D. feel it's annoying and too popular. Even though Helen and T.D. are trying to write a report (T.D.'s is on Belgium), Martha convinces them to let her play the song (called "Sheky the Sea Lion") one more time. Truman enters and reveals that he enjoys the song too. T.D. shuts the song off, so Truman asks what his problem with it is. T.D. says that he just doesn't understand the hype, and feels he could write a better song. He then decides to do just that, forming a "rock band" with his friends.

He and Carolina find a ukulele in the attic, Truman finds a synthesiser, Helen finds a drum kit, and Martha finds drumsticks and is given a microphone along with Carolina. Then, the band has their first practice session, but T.D.'s friends point out that they can't play without any song. T.D. can't think of a song, so his friends give him advice to find inspiration — Martha suggests eating dog food, but T.D. apparently gave that up in second grade, then Carolina suggests chewing gum, but T.D. doesn't want to, then Helen suggests thinking on his own, so he decides to do that.

He goes for a walk around town, then when he sees a waffle, he gets an idea: write the song about Belgium (where waffles were invented). He tells his friends, but Carolina thinks Belgium is a boring country due to its size and obscurity. Helen points out that the rest of them don't know much about Belgium, but T.D. reveals that he's composing the lyrics. After a practice session, the kids decide that they need an audience.

They play it to the babies at Truman's mother's daycare and they seem to enjoy it, but, being babies, they ask it to be played again and again until the band grows bored. When a girl in the audience says, "Again!" for the fifth time, Martha suggests singing something else, but T.D. points out that they've only written one song. Thus, T.D.'s bandmates leave, so he tries to sing it to them alone, but the babies lose interest. The older kids and Martha quickly start to miss being in a band, so they decide to do another concert and show the whole neighbourhood.

That night, the band performs a cover of "Sheky the Sea Lion", then performs their Belgium song (which T.D. names simply "Belgium") again.

This episode provides examples of

  • Age-Stereotypical Food: Truman decides that the baby boy in the brown overalls' comment "Applesauce!" means he likes the song, because apparently, babies love applesauce.
  • Bait-and-Switch Time Skip: T.D. seems to have gone on a walk for a long time, but then Truman reveals he was only out for thirty seconds or so.
  • Boredom Montage: The band is shown playing the song to the babies again and again and growing weary of it.
  • Character Tics: The baby boy in the red shirt and blue overalls keeps crawling around in circles.
  • Death Glare: Carolina glares at T.D. for blowing dust in her face.
  • Disney Acid Sequence: When T.D. and his band are seen playing the Belgium song to the babies, they're shown on coloured backgrounds with multicoloured stars.
  • Ear Worm: T.D. claims that he's trying to get "Sheky the Sea Lion" out of his head.
  • Entertainment Below Their Age: Danny apparently loves "Sheky the Sea Lion", even though it's described as a kids' song.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: T.D. is inspired to write a song about Belgium after seeing a waffle (which were invented there).
  • Everybody Hates Mathematics: T.D. compares an annoying, confusing situation (not knowing how to organise his band) to math homework.
  • Extreme Omnivore: T.D. apparently used to eat dog food, but gave it up in the second grade.
  • Hollywood Cuisine: Exaggerated for the association with waffles and Belgium; they're described as not only eating waffles for breakfast every day there, but lunch and dinner as well.
  • Incredibly Lame Fun: Discussed. Carolina thinks that Mrs. Clusky's view on Belgium as interesting should be taken with a grain of salt as "she's a teacher, and teachers think all kinds of weird stuff is interesting".
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: In-Universe, the reason Helen finds "Sheky the Sea Lion" annoying is because "every kid in Wagstaff City has been playing it nonstop", and T.D. finds it annoying because he can't grasp why it's a hit.
  • Kids Hate Vegetables: When T.D. hears a baby say, "Creamed spinach", Truman thinks that means the baby didn't like T.D.'s singing.
  • Location Song: The song T.D. and his friends compose is about Belgium.
  • Musical World Hypotheses: Both songs in this episode are written in-universe.
  • Non Sequitur:
    • A baby boy says, "Applesauce!" for no reason (but Truman decides to take it as a compliment) after hearing the older kids' song.
    • Later, one of the babies says, "Creamed spinach", which Truman again thinks means something (in this case negative criticism) but was probably just a non sequitur.
  • Sanity Slippage: In "Sheky the Sea Lion", Sheky gets hit on the head and develops an obsession with pistachio bread.
