Recap / Lupin IIIS 2 E 78

Go To

Diamonds Gleam in a Robot's Eyes note  with the English title of Ice, Robot.

Our story begins with a phone call in the middle of the night, awakening the sleeping Lupin and Jigen: Fujiko is calling them from Dr. Pot’s workshop in Harlem, claiming that he has invented a robot that can cry diamonds from its eye, and she’s currently wearing a dress made from said diamonds. Lupin however thinks it is a joke and goes back to sleep. However, Pot’s home is surrounded by cars and a clownish gangster makes his entrance, claiming the robot for himself; as Pot recognizes the man as Gavott, the bandit opens fire on the duo with a machine gun. The scene then switches to Gavott’s bar, which also doubles as his hideout, where the gangster is wooing his girlfriend Baby, telling her he got the diamond-producing robot she desired. However when he activates the machine only cold water comes out of its eye, causing Baby to beat him up while his right-hand man, One-Eared Joe, laughs. Gavott decides to go back and kidnap Dr. Pot in order to have the robot fixed, unaware that Lupin’s team is coming to get the robot back, including Fujiko, whose diamond dress allowed her to survive the bullets.

After crashing the car, the four meet Zenigata, here to enjoy some of the local shows, and escape him once more. The robot is easily recovered, but as the gang returns to Pot’s house (evading Zenigata again), Gavott and his gang return to the hideout with the professor. After another series of antics, the crime boss learns of Lupin’s involvement in the story and orders his men to storm the workshop again to get the robot back for Baby. Back at Pot’s house, Lupin and his gang are discussing the next line of action while looking at some of Pot’s seemingly useless inventions when Gavott’s gang attack, forcing them to hide, but first they have to do something about the robot. A few seconds later, the assault begins, but it becomes soon apparent that neither Lupin’s gang or the robot are here. Gavott laments his fate while Baby calls him again a fourth-rate gangster and leaves the room; the crime boss then decides to think of some other strategy and leaves. Turns out that our heroes were hiding on the ceiling, hanging from the chandelier, and that Lupin dismantled the robot and scattered the pieces so that Gavott couldn’t find them. As he proceeds to put the robot back together, Jigen reveals that Baby was still there in the bathroom: rather than harm her, Lupin asks her to tell Gavott that he’s ready to exchange the robot for the professor.

The exchange will take place on the roller coaster of a local park where Gavott and Baby first met. The plan is to put the professor and the robot on two different cars and then recover them once they reach the station. However, Gavott has no intention of playing fair and square and, to cap it all, Zenigata appears with a horde of policemen. In the following, comedic chaos, Lupin eventually manages to recover both the robot and Dr. Pot, causing Baby and Gavott to argue again; the gang promptly suggest the two get married already if they like to argue this much and give them a wedding cake... which promptly explodes in their faces. With the help of Goemon’s Zantetsuken, the gang manages to escape Zenigata’s forces and make back to the lab, where the robot is finally put to work... and makes diamond-shaped ice cubes from its eye! Turns out that this was its intended purpose, and Lupin’s meddling with the machinery repaired it by accident. We then get to see what happened to the other characters: Gavott has given up his life of crime and now is back to his old job as an advertising clown, Dr. Pot’s robot now works in Gavott’s bar, for two dollars an hour, while One-Eared Joe and Baby started a...not-so-idyllic relationship together.

This Episode contains examples of:

  • Absent-Minded Professor: Dr. Pot manages to make a diamond-spewing robot by mistake.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Lupin accidentally manages to make the robot work properly after breaking it apart and putting it back together.
  • Artistic License: Fujiko says that her diamond-encrusted dress allowed her to survive the bullets. While a diamond's hardness is renowned, the same cannot be said of its toughness (resistance to impacts), which is not as exceptional.
  • Ash Face: Both Gavott and Baby end up black with ashes after the cake bomb explodes.
  • Badass Boast: Averted when Gavott tries to threaten Pot by mentioning that he used to be a boxing champion under the name of the "Minnesota Tyrannosaur". Pot casually asks if that's the reason he's so punch-drunk.
  • Covert Pervert: In the Italian dub, Zenigata openly admits that he's here on Broadway to see racy shows with strippers.
  • Handbag of Hurt: Gavott gets repeatedly thrashed by Baby with her purse. One-Eared Joe also gets dealt this in establishing his new relationship with Baby.
  • Henpecked Husband: Not really married, but Gavott is under Baby's thumb.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: How Lupin hides the robot from Gavott: by dismantling it and putting the pieces in the room.
  • Laughably Evil: Gavott is, by no means, meant to be taken seriously.
  • Lighter and Softer: This episode is this compared to many others, and also has hints of being Denser and Wackier.
  • Mundane Utility: The robot's original purpose was to make diamond-shaped ice cubes.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: One-Eared Joe ends up becoming Baby's new boyfriend.
  • Rule of Three: Zenigata trying to get a really literal-minded taxi driver to go after Lupin: first, he dismounts the cab, and runs personally after them. The second time he gives Zenigata a piggyback ride. The third time he enters the cab and flies out of it dressed as Superman, much to Zenigata's confusion note .
  • Shout-Out: The episode, especially in the opening and closing sequences, is a homage to the old series The FBI.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Gavott is ridiculous-looking and gaunt, while Baby is more conventionally attractive.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: Detailing what happened to Gavott, Dr. Pot and his Robot, Baby, and One-Eared Joe.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Fujiko's diamond dress is not mentioned again after the first act.
