Recap / Lucifer (2016) S02E03 "Sin-Eater"

Go To

A serial killer is on a murder spree in Los Angeles, targetting those who bullied people via uploading embarassing videos on the Internet. The case intrigues Lucifer, who feels offended that some would-be punisher is pretending to do his work. Meanwhile, Mother is having some trouble acclimating to her new life in the human world.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Mother says that she now understands why Lucifer is running a nightclub and spending his days enjoying all the pleasures the human world can offer. What she can't understand, though, is why he's still punishing people by working with the police. Lucifer has no answer to offer her.
Mother: This is what your Father would want. Are you still trying to win him over?
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Lucifer says that burning someone alive is a truly nasty punishment, reserved only for the most wicked back in Hell: pedophiles, Nazis, people leaning their seats back on the plane...
  • Because I'm Good At It: Lucifer realizes that this is the reason he continues punishing people despite not running Hell anymore.
  • Better as Friends: Dan says that while he'll always be a part of Chloe and Trixie's lives, it's time they moved on and stopped living in the past.
  • Brain Bleach: Lucifer continues reaching for this when confronted with his mother's attempts to understand humanity.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Amenadiel, in order to deal with the loss of his angelic powers and his wings.
  • Enhance Button: Averted. When Chloe asks a tech to zoom in on a video, the resulting image is heavily grained.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: The killer started off wanting to do good and punish those who hurt others, but somewhere along the way he became just like his victims, coming to enjoying tormenting them and hearing their pleas for mercy. And it's why he also tried to kill himself as well.
  • Hurricane of Puns:
    • Lucifer and Ella come up with a few pretty good ones when they find out that the fire was more intense on the victim's crotch.
(they all lean closer to take a better look)
Lucifer: Goodness gracious, great balls of fire.
      Chloe: (rolls eyes) Lucifer.
Lucifer: I mean, I've heard of hot pants, but this really brings a new meaning to the term "fire crotch", doesn't it?
      Chloe: Lucifer.
Lucifer: Wait, I have more. Smokey Bobbinson? Weekend at Burnies?
      Ella: His burning bush?
Lucifer: (clearly amused) Oh! Very good! (Beat, goes serious) That was actually me, by the way, so don't tell anyone.
    • Lame Pun Reaction: Needless to say, Chloe isn't the least bit amused by their wit.
    • Lucifer keeps throwing puns related to the way the victims died throughout the episode.
  • I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!: When Lucifer asks how was Mother able to get to the police station, this is essentially her response in so many words:
Mother: Well it wasn't difficult. I simply smiled at a male human and asked him to take me.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Chloe and Dan are officially getting a divorce.
  • Ironic Hell: Lucifer condemns Mother to a life among the puny humans she despises so much. Conveniently, that also means that she can stay close to her sons —and that Lucifer is technically not reneging on his deal with his Father.
  • Moment Killer: Mother walks in on Lucifer and his girl-of-the-day just when they're about to, er, get intimate.
  • Mugging the Monster: That thief had no idea whose handbag he was trying to steal...
  • murder.com: Lucifer presenting his victims in online videos.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Mother flashes one after a brief Freakout over killing a would-be mugger.
  • A Rare Sentence: Chloe is surprised to find herself uttering the sentence "Do not touch the charred crotch." Then she has to say it again.
  • Squick: Combined heavily with Brain Bleach. Lucifer, when his mother asks him to be part of his life after the aforementioned Moment Killer.
  • Super-Strength: Mother discovers she has this.
