Amigo Grande

In honor of Sheet Rock Hills History Week, the principal of Sheet Rock Hills Elementary wants to install a new flagpole to proudly display the flag of Sheet Rock Hills. Manny is called for the task, but when the flagpole’s size proves daunting he calls a friend and tells him to bring “Amigo Grande”, apparently a special, very powerful tool. However, Manny’s tools, upon hearing this, become worried that they just aren’t good enough for the repairman…

Tropes in “Amigo Grande” include:

  • Early-Bird Cameo: Elena the mailwoman, who won’t make her proper debut until “Special Delivery”, can be briefly seen delivering a package to Mr. Chu.
  • Foreign Language Title: "Amigo Grande" means "Big Friend" in Spanish.
  • Furry Confusion: Mr. Lopart is seen trying (and failing) to use an inanimate wrench.
  • It May Help You on Your Quest: For some reason, Kelly decides to give Manny a new hard hat before either of them know that the job of the day will end up involving construction equipment.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Turner at one point calls “Amigo Grande” (which the tools are convinced is an Animate Inanimate Object like them, but which actually turns out to just be Ben’s nickname for his crane truck) “Amigo Grungey”.
  • Newhart Phonecall: Manny calling Ben is presented this way.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Pat’s mother and father have, respectively, pink and blue handles.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Somehow, Ben, who was never seen before (or since, aside from a few brief cameos) is a good friend of Manny’s.
  • Series Continuity Error: Kelly gives Manny a new hard hat despite the fact that he shouldn’t need one, since he just got a new hard hat in the previous episode.
  • Thought Bubble: In a rare non-comic example, when Pat thinks about his family a thought bubble showing said family appears above his head.
  • Vehicle Title: “Amigo Grande” turns out to be what Ben named his crane truck.

Tool For Sale

While Manny visits Mrs. Portillo’s yard sale, a tired Pat decides to take a nap in the toolbox- but picks the wrong toolbox, and soon finds himself sold to Señor Sanchez!

”Tool For Sale” provides examples of:

  • Failures on Ice: The roller-skate version of this trope ends up happening to Mr. Lopart when he tries skating in the park- first he can barely stay upright, and when he finally manages to do so he just ends up rolling backwards down a curved bridge and falling in the park’s fountain.
  • Furry Confusion: This is implied with Mrs. Portillo’s toolbox, which is very clearly meant for inanimate tools.
  • Garage Sale: Manny drops by Mrs. Portillo’s to see if she has anything good for sale, but ends up having to help her with a stuck garage door. Meanwhile, Pat, who was exhausted from staying up late the previous night, takes a nap in Mrs. Portillo’s old toolbox (which he thought was Manny’s)... which Señor Sanchez then buys, with Pat still inside.
  • Identical Stranger: While searching for Pat, Manny and the other tools encounter a man who looks like a slightly younger version of Señor Sanchez.
  • Missed Him by That Much: While trying to find Pat, Manny and the tools end up arriving at Señor Sanchez’s house right after Sanchez left to bring Pat back to Manny’s shop.
  • Mistaken from Behind: Manny does this in the park with a man who happens to look an awful lot like Señor Sanchez.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: At the beginning of the episode, the tools are seen sleeping on Manny’s stuffed chair.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Manny’s tools are all afflicted with this, having apparently stayed up late the previous night playing checkers, although everyone except for Pat manages to get over it rather quickly.
  • Stock Phrases: When woken up by Manny, Rusty asks for
    Rusty: Five more minutes…
  • Talking in Your Sleep: The “humorous gibberish” version happens to Pat in the episode’s opening.
Pat: No more cherry pie for me.
Pat: Watch out for those giant porcupines!
