Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E42 "Over the Hill"

Go To

Gretel and Bailey shadow Action News reporter Veronica Hill for Career Day, who is particularly stoked that day because she'll be promoted to lead serious correspondent, allowing her to interview important people like Mayor Murray Meyer. Unfortunately, someone else is chosen to get that promotion at the last second: one Harrison Philtrum, whom Gretel swears she has seen somewhere before.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Veronica Hill usually appears as an occasional side character with little to no relation to the main cast and their friends. This is her first starring role in an episode, where she gets to be Gretel and Bailey's career day mentor.
  • Artifact Name: A Van Dyke named Van Dyke, but without the goatee that makes him a Van Dyke in the first place.
  • Beard of Evil: Van Dyke returns, but there's not much of a Beard of Evil left; just the mustache.
  • The Bus Came Back: This is Van Dyke's first appearance since he appeared in "Close Shave".
  • The Charmer: Harrison Philtrum has good looks and intelligent quips who can make the board in the conference room go wild. Subverted in that the quips are courtesy of his mustache, who is of course Van Dyke, and without him, Philtrum is just a Brainless Beauty.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Kevin and Hamster go to a barbershop/pet groomer, and the groomer puts Hamster in a grooming machine, warning that it's safe so long as it isn't set at its highest setting. Later, when Kevin finds out that Gretel is fighting Van Dyke, he takes the machine (with Hamster still inside it), and when Van Dyke attaches himself to Hamster, Kevin puts them both in the machine and sets it all the way up, resulting in Hamster being depelted and Van Dyke reduced to a pile of burnt hair.
  • Companion Cube: Veronica has a stuffed teddy bear in the van, named Bearbra Walters. She screams and cries into him whenever she feels distressed.
  • Fur Is Clothing: When Hamster is shorn of his fur, he has on a pair of Goofy Print Underwear.
  • Meat Puppet: Naturally, "Harrison Philtrum"—the handsome but vapid man Van Dyke has currently attached himself to.
  • Pulling Themselves Together: After the lawnmower incident from his previous appearance, Van Dyke had to put himself together into a mustache. He seemingly lost too much hair to include the beard.
  • Punny Name: Harrison Philtrum turns out to be one. Bailey points out that a philtrum is the area between the nose and upper lip, and once Gretel figures out that Harrison can be shortened to Harry (hairy) she realizes it's an alias for Van Dyke.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: Van Dyke, natch.
  • Take Over the World: Van Dyke plans to take control of Mayor Meyer, then the city, and then the world.
  • Villain-Possessed Bystander: Like last time, Van Dyke plans to Take Over the World by possessing a seemingly random bystander in order to get close to someone with power. Said bystander is this handsome fellow presumably named Harrison Philtrum note
