Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E11 "Saturday Homecoming Fever"

Go To

Kevin is getting tired of his not-so-honorable reputation as the "minivan kid" at school, so when the school is looking for a new homecoming king and queen for the night's disco-themed homecoming dance, Kevin sees a chance to rebrand himself, and plans to attend it. That same night, however, The Destructress and FistPuncher escape prison, and plan to crash that very same homecoming dance to announce their return.

Tropes:

  • Abdicate the Throne:
    • Initially, Fred gets chosen as the Homecoming Queen. Immediately upon hearing the announcement, Fred rushes to the principal's office and announces her abdication over the intercom.
    • Not long after, one Hunter Campbell, who was chosen as the Homecoming King, also chooses to abdicate his title, as he announces his love for a commoner girl named Pamela Brian. The two immediately leave the school.
  • Ballroom Blitz: Destructress and FistPuncher crash the homecoming dance Kevin attends to.
  • Be the Ball: Gretel spends the second half of the episode disguised as a mirror ball. This doesn't stop her from kicking ass, however.
    Gretel: DISCO PUNCH!
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Exasperated that she has to be babysat by Fred, Gretel claims she cannot wait to be a teenager. In response, Hamster quips that it won't be happening since they're a cartoon.
  • Celebrity Is Overrated: Fred has become very popular at school due to saving the day in "Cheer Cheer Bang Bang", but Fred resents the attention she's getting.
  • Convenient Slow Dance: Shows up right as Kevin and Hiromi are about to dance together. Kevin bails out due to nervousness.
  • Dance-Off: In the hopes of stalling Lauren and Lyle from wrecking the place further, he challenges the two supervillains to a dance battle. Hiromi opts in as Kevin's dance partner.
  • Dancing Royalty: Kevin and Hiromi are absolutely killing it on the dance floor against Destructress and FistPuncher, and incredibly in sync. Turns out both of them watched Darren Dark's Disco-Dancing Demo.
  • Dressed in Layers: Becomes a Rule of Three with Destructress and FistPuncher: They're wearing disco outfits over their supervillain suits, over the same previous outfits, over their supervillain suits again. Like last time, Naya lampshades all occasions in which Lauren and Lyle change clothes.
  • Floating Advice Reminder: Darren Dark, the man in the video Kevin watches to learn disco dancing, keeps appearing during the dance to remind him of his advice.
  • High-School Dance: A Disco-themed one at that.
  • Impossibly Tacky Clothes: Kevin dresses up in a nice, spiffy, white leisure suit, but Gretel wonders why he's dressed like a vampire ice cream man. Similarly, Inga, the lunch lady, asks why he's dressed like an ice cream vampire as well.
  • Instant Expert: It only took watching a couple videos of Darren Dark's Disco Dancing Demo for Kevin to effortlessly perform the hottest disco moves from 1973. It later turns out Hiromi watched the same videos as Kevin did, which aids the two dancing in sync with each other during the dance battle.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Kevin is annoyed that everyone at school (except for Fred and Hiromi) calls him Minivan Kid. This includes Destructress and FistPuncher, who shouldn't know him well enough to call him that.
  • The Reveal: Fred’s last name is revealed to be “Grant”, making her Kevin and Gretel’s paternal cousin. Also, Hiromi’s last name is “Tanaka”, respectively.
  • "Staying Alive" Dance Pose: Kevin does this a few times during the dance.
