"You should've killed them all and made them understand."
Wen Ruohan telling his son where he went wrong

Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji defeat the Tortoise of Carnage, and with some outside help they return back to their homes. However, the trouble doesn't stop there as the rift between the Jiang family continues to grow, and the Jiang Clan is the next to be targeted by the Wen Clan.

  • Adaptational Distillation: Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's interactions after killing the Tortoise of Carnage are shortened so that they primarily focus on the latter playing a tune for the feverish Wei Wuxian.
  • Always Second Best: Jiang Cheng admits to Wei Wuxian that he resents how the latter is always better than him in everything.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's not certain whether Yu Ziyuan starts slapping Wang Lingjiao because she draws the line at cutting off Wei Wuxian's hand even though she hates his guts, or that she was about to go through with it before Wang Lingjiao offended her pride one time too many.
  • Badass Boast: Yu Ziyuan gives a roasting to Wang Lingjiao after having just about enough of her, reminding her to learn her place.
Yu Ziyuan: You think you're superior? Let me tell you who's the lady of the house here. It's me, not you!
  • Call-Forward: Lan Wangji plays some music for Wei Wuxian in the Xuanwu Cave to help soothe his illness. The song in question? The same one the latter played to calm down Wen Ning back at Dafan Mountain in the present timeline.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: As Jiang Cheng bitterly notes, while Wei Wuxian got recognition for killing an ancient beast, he didn't even get a single word of thanks for walking for seven days nonstop to reach Lotus Pier and call for help.
  • Evil Is Petty: Driving home how malicious she is, Wang Lingjiao is accused of targeting the Jiang Clan and accusing them of disrespect simply because she wants revenge on Wei Wuxian for slighting her at the Xuanwu Cave.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: When Yu Ziyuan points out to Jiang Fengmian about the rumors surrounding Wei Wuxian which may explain why he gives the boy special treatment, her husband immediately silences her by addressing her by her full name, when he would always refer to her as "my lady" (or just "Ziyuan" in the official subtitles) in their previous interactions.
  • Headlock of Dominance: A more light-hearted example. An annoyed Jiang Cheng performs a headlock on Wei Wuxian after the latter teases him.
  • Please Spare Him, My Liege!: Jiang Cheng repeatedly begs his mother to spare Wei Wuxian, and gets on his knees to plead when it looks like she's actually considering cutting his hand off.
  • Poor Communication Kills: There are strong hints that Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan do care for each other, but their pride, personalities and different perspectives on family make it impossible for them to find a middle ground.
  • Servile Snarker: Yu Ziyuan's handmaids subtly mock Wang Lingjiao for demanding that other people do menial work for her, even though she's a maid herself.
  • Stealing the Credit: Wen Chao presents the Tortoise of Slaughter's shell to Wen Ruohan and claims he took it down (when it was actually Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji). It doesn't take long for his father to point out that they both know he didn't kill it.
  • This Is for Emphasis, Bitch!: In the fan subtitles, Yu Ziyuan hisses, "How dare you, bitch!" when she slaps Wang Lingjiao.
  • Tough Love: Wei Wuxian believes that Jiang Fengmian is more strict with Jiang Cheng not because he loves him less but because he's trying to prepare Jiang Cheng for when he'll take over as the clan leader.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng are more than ready to give Wang Lingjiao a beating, and the only reason they don't it is because Yu Ziyuan stops them.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian can finally take a breather after the horrific experience of being imprisoned by the Wens, running from their clutches and/or being stuck in a cave while having to defeat a giant creature. The latter also gives some much-needed reassurance to his martial brother, who feels unworthy of being the next clan leader. Unfortunately things go down from there, with the two becoming concerned over the Jiang parents' straining relationship and having a dramatic confrontation with the Wen Clan that involves threats and painfully punishing Wei Wuxian.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After Jiang Cheng confides in Wei Wuxian all his insecurities and frustrations about being Always Second Best and The Unfavorite in the family, Wei Wuxian gives him a heartfelt speech that snaps him out of his funk.
Wei Wuxian: Not good enough to be a leader? Who says a leader must follow the traditions? Among all the people who led the Jiang Clan, did they all follow the traditions? Jiang Cheng, listen up. When you become the leader, I'll follow your lead, just like your father and my father. The Lan Clan has the Lan brothers. Our Jiang Clan has us. note  If anyone dares to say you're not good enough, I'll beat them up!
