Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: Ross can be seen tying a necktie while he and Joey are talking about Cheryl. It turns out he's actually tying it to give to Joey so he doesn't have to do it.
  • Call-Back: Chandler mentions Angela DelVecchio, Joey's former girlfriend, who appeared once on the show's fifth episode.
  • Can't Tie His Tie: Ross describing Cheryl's apartment to Joey takes place while he's apparently tying up his tie. Once the knot is in place he takes it off and hands it to Joey, indicating that Joey couldn't do up his own tie.
  • Crossword Puzzle: Rachel is trying to find all the answers on a crossword puzzle by herself. She refuses to outright ask for help, but does get Chandler to feed her one answer by asking if he wants to go see the 1996 Tony Award winning musical (it's RENT, by the way).
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Cheryl is so attracive even Phoebe and Monica comment on it.
Monica: This may be the only time I ever say this, but did you see the ass on her?
  • Gift-Giving Gaffe: Chandler gets Kathy a first edition copy of her favorite book, The Velveteen Rabbit. Ross points out that it's too good, better than what Joey would have given her, as he was hardly even planning on giving her anything.
Ross: How do you think it's gonna look when you get her something incredibly meaningful and expensive, and Joey, her boyfriend, gives her an orange?
  • Hypocritical Humor: Cheryl does not want to go to Ross' apartment because of a "weird smell" when hers has trash and rotten food laying around everywhere.
    Joey: What smell?
    Ross: I don't know! Soap?!
  • Insult Backfire: Upon seeing Ross with Cheryl Rachel attempts to to undercut him by suggesting Cheryl is in a bet with her friends to find the biggest geek. Ross cheerfully responds "Fine by me, hope she wins!"
  • Is the Answer to This Question "Yes"?: When Cheryl first invites Ross into her apartment he answers with a paleontology-themed version of this.
Ross: Did homo erectus hunt with wooden tools?
    Cheryl: According to recent findings!
  • Neat Freak: During the end credits scene Monica shows up at Cheryl's apartment and admits she couldn't sleep after Ross told her about the mess and asks if she can tidy up. Cheryl shuts the door in her face...and Monica promptly starts cleaning it.
  • The Pig-Pen: Cheryl seems perfect, until Ross goes into her apartment and sees it's a pigsty.
  • Trash of the Titans: How Ross describes Cheryl's apartment.
Ross: You know how you throw your jacket on a chair at the end of the day?... Well, like that, only that instead of the chair, it's a pile of garbage; and instead of a jacket, it's a pile of garbage; and instead of the end of the day, it's the end of time and garbage is all that has survived.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: The widow attempts to get out of paying Monica and Phoebe by claiming her husband was the one who handled all the expenses and fakes crying at her memories of it. Phoebe sees through the ruse and confronts the woman to get her to pay up.
