Recap / Endless Summer Book 3 Chapter 3 Whatdoesnt Kill Us

Go To

  • Agony of the Feet: Sean’s mother, Tricia, dropped a turkey pan on her foot when he was young.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Mouse gives Jake a hit to the chest that makes him cough blood.
  • Bound and Gagged: Sean and Craig are like this on the Arachnid ship until the party rescues them.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Quinn has returned to being normal ever since Rourke took the Island’s Heart. She can’t use her powers, but she can sense the second half of the Heart.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Jake is busy turning ropes into nets. During the attack on the Arachnid ship, Raj can put that net to good use in the fight.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Malatesta’s second rule is to use the sea as a weapon. It comes in handy against an electric mook.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet: Just as soon as Taylor and Sean recover the other half of the Heart, Cetus appears!
  • Dressed to Plunder: Before the attack on the Arachnid ship, Taylor gets the chance to put on the Swash My Buckle costume which is definitely something worthy of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Wearing it gets points with Raj, Diego, Michelle and Jake.
  • Elemental Punch: An Arachnid mook charges at Taylor with electro gloves. The best way to defeat them is to trip them into the water.
  • Guns vs. Swords: The group comes in with 18th century pirate swords against high tech assault rifles. The group wins.
  • Heel–Face Return: Sean tries to get Aleister to come back to the group. Taylor can either support that decision or feel like he’ll just turn around and betray them.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Jake does this with Mouse, aka Mike, trying to get Mike to remember him. Unfortunately, the brainwashing wins.
  • It's All My Fault: Sean is upset at himself that he couldn’t keep Taylor from falling out of the helicopter at the end of Book 2, not having a plan or being able to protect everyone.
  • I Want Them Alive!: Aleister shouts this order out when the group fights the Arachnids.
  • Kid with the Leash: Aleister is this to the Arachnids, especially Mouse.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Aleister believed the group was killed at Masada until they came.
  • Nobody Touches the Hair: One dialogue option has Taylor get mad at Malatesta not to throw water at them. Michelle likes it saying an attack on their hair is one on hers.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Before they go out to find the Heart, the location is near a jagged reef that Malatesta says Quinn has to go to alone. Estela says they’re not letting her go alone, joining her.
  • Oh, Crap!: An Arachnid soldier has this reaction on seeing the Dorado.
  • Painful Rhyme: Played for laughs. In Sean’s vision, he points out that his mom did this just to get something to rhyme with Gayle.
  • Pin-Pulling Teeth: Malatesta does this to Yvonne’s “perfume”, which is a gas grenade.
  • Practical Joke: Jake tries to get through with Mike like this with memories of basic training. Jokes include filling the shower heads with shampoo, and getting a CO’s radio stuck on Dora the Explorer for two hours.
  • So Proud of You: Diego has this moment when Varyyn tells the soldiers to “get wrecked.”
  • Talk Like a Pirate: Taylor does a little of this after putting on the Swash My Buckle outfit.
  • That Sounds Familiar: As the group row to Neptune Cove, Taylor wonders why the name sounds familiar, but only if you had taken a luxury penthouse all the way back in Book 1 Chapter 2.
  • This Cannot Be!: Sean has this moment when the Mysterious Figure presents Sean his father’s watch.
  • Time Dilation: Each of the group has experienced time differently since splitting up. Taylor/Jake/Estela/Michelle/Diego/Raj only remember it was a few days ago. Sean and Craig have weeks, and Quinn has a month.
  • Try Not to Die: Malatesta’s first rule in fighting is “don’t die”.
  • Waking Non Sequitur: When Raj is so rudely woken up, he lets one of these out.
Raj: “No! Don’t eat me! I know my name is on the menu, but that doesn’t mean—-
  • Water Wake-up: The morning after you board the Dorado, Malatesta wakes Raj up with a bucket of water. He threatens to do the same to Michelle, but she’s having none of it.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Michelle and Jake aren’t pleased at Sean offering Aleister a chance to come back. They can say the same to Taylor if they also want him back.
