Recap / Endless Summer Book 2 Chapter 15 Self Destruct

Go To

  • An Arm and a Leg: In the epilogue if you’ve recovered all clues, it shows that Mike lost his legs surviving the plane crash.
  • Berserk Button: Lundgren flies into rage at Jake if you found his last Cuban cigar, which Jake is smoking.
  • The Bus Came Back: Yvonne comes back in a big way to bring Taylor to the center of Mt. Atropo.
  • Everybody Lives: The end goal of the Endless in their 2,139 loops was to create a timeline where the Catalysts live. One timeline is shown where Taylor made it to the end, but since Michelle and Raj died, their Idol would not drain blood.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: Lila saves the group from execution, but not without getting wounded. Whether Taylor succeeds or not in convincing Estela not to kill her, Lila still dies.
  • I Always Wanted to Say That: Craig gets to fulfil his wish of saying “Get... to... the... choppaaaa!
  • Jet Pack: Mouse fights against the rest of the Catalysts on the Masada side.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: A premium choice allows the Catalysts to leave messages to the past to their loved ones since the present world outside of La Huerta is no more, getting to avert this trope. Diego calls his parents, Raj calls his grandmother, Sean calls his mother, Estela calls her uncle, Quinn calls her parents, Craig calls his little brother, Jake calls his sister Rebecca, and Zahra calls herself while adding in a memory only she knows to prove it’s not a prank. The only ones who don’t call anyone are Michelle who feels like she pushed anyone who cared for her away and Taylor, who has those they love before them.
  • Oh, Crap!: The Arachnids have this reaction along with Curse Cut Short when Craig fires the chain gun at them.
  • Party Scattering: The final chapter of Book 2 does this big time. The first group to separate is Grace and Aleister, who are taken away on a private chopper with Rourke. Varyyn, Diego, Michelle, and Raj reached the mainland after almost getting killed by Mouse melting the gondola cable. Jake, Sean, Craig, Quinn, Zahra, and Taylor are in the chopper when Zahra is pulled out by Lundgren, Quinn uses the Island’s Heart power to stop Tetra’s missile from hitting, and Taylor falls out of the chopper.
  • More Dakka: Craig uses the chopper’s chain gun to attack the Arachnids coming towards them.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: A premium choice allows Zahra to set up a self destruct sequence by overheating the cooling towers, enough to destroy the Masada facility without endangering the pods with the guests.
  • Shock and Awe: Zahra rips some wires out of the chopper to electrocute Lundgren through his exoskeleton.
  • The Starscream: The epilogue reveals that Lundgren is this to Rourke, making sure to plan for when he’s inevitably betrayed.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Lila’s time with the group ends this way, either being killed by Estela or buying enough time for them to run.
  • Sequel Hook: As befitting the final chapter of the book, it has these. Now that Rourke has the Island’s Heart, he begins work on the Janus Project. A mysterious man is seen walking along the island. Taylor can also solve the puzzle with the Catalyst Idols and learn the truth of the Endless.
  • Taking You with Me: Non-fatal example. Lundgren pulls Zahra out of the chopper after being electrocuted. It’s shown that she’s alive since her Idol also leaks blood after solving the riddle.
  • Temporal Paradox: When Craig’s idea for the time phone is to convince Rourke’s parents not to have sex, Zahra tells him that would cause one of these. Played straight when the group gets to the hangar and sees a helicopter in one of these. Jake realizes he’s the one who told Lundgren this info and gives him the coordinates to fix the paradox and make the helicopter appear.
  • This Cannot Be!: Uqzhaal has this reaction on learning that the Vaanti’s entire religion to the Endless was all a means to an end in keeping the Catalysts alive.
  • Wham Shot: Two of them. Jake finds out that Mouse is his friend Mike who he thought was dead. The other, after getting through the final puzzle after collecting all the Catalyst Idols, is another when the Endless takes off their helmet to reveal they are an older Taylor.
