Recap / Empath: The Luckiest Smurf - The Smurf Village Revival

Go To

Empath tells his young daughter about the time after the Smurfs had returned from their time-traveling journey that he was in a coma and that a mysterious stranger named Benedictus offered peace and comfort to the Smurfs through the power of his God, with Grandpa Smurf finding out that this mysterious stranger was actually working for Lucifer.

This story provides examples of:

  • Addictive Magic: Benedictus' power, which Empath says the Smurfs had received night after night of his being with them to preach his "gospel".
  • An Aesop: Empath points out the Aesop of this story in the middle of telling it to his daughter Psycheliana that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, so his ministers will also disguise themselves as "ministers of righteousness", whose end shall be according to their works.
  • As the Good Book Says...: There are Scripture verses that are either quoted or paraphrased throughout the story, with Lucifer himself quoting Isaiah 14:13-14.
  • Devil in Disguise: Tapper sings a song about Benedictus being "a devil in disguise" when he is exposed.
  • Demonic Possession: Benedictus and his followers claim that those who actively resist his "gift of the Holy Spirit" have a "Jezebel spirit".
  • Fake Defector: Tapper, Duncan McSmurf, and Grouchy become fake converts to Benedictus' religion (but Duncan and Grouchy, as it turns out, become true converts unto God) to infiltrate his army and take it down from within.
  • Framing Story: Empath tells his daughter the story, which he becomes unconscious during the telling of. Traveler enters and brings Empath's daughter to the part of the story where she plays an active part in.
  • Go into the Light: Empath has an out-of-body experience where he travels the world to find a light at the end that he is drawn to enter into. Traveler and Empath's daughter come to Empath's rescue, persuading him not to enter into the light.
  • I Can't Believe It's Not Heroin!: The power of Benedictus' "Holy Spirit" has this effect on the Smurfs who felt it upon receiving it. Clumsy says that it's better than smurfnip.
  • I Will Wait for You: Smurfette tells Empath she'll still be waiting for him to ask her to marry him after his revival and telling her he's met their future daughter.
  • Light Is Not Good: Lucifer appears in this story as a shining angel.
  • Meaningful Rename: Baby Smurf is given the new name Miracle in this story because of his actions.
  • Musical Episode: Chapter 6 has Tapper singing "Devil In Disguise" to Benedictus after he's revealed to be a servant of Satan.
  • Sinister Minister: Benedictus, who is actually working for Lucifer.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Benedictus is actually a serpentine creature called a Viperion.
  • Take That!: Written as a commentary about so-called "Christian revivals" in the modern age, with Benedictus being a Composite Character version of Benny Hinn and Joel Osteen.
  • Time Travel: Traveler takes Empath's daughter back into the past to rescue her father from going into the light.
  • Too Good to Be True: What Grouchy says about Benedictus in regard to being a preacher of God and giving the Smurfs the power to live changed lives.
