Recap / Dragon Ball Z Abridged CV 7

Go To

Cell is standing in the ring musing that what the Cell Games really needs is some kind of badass theme song, and thinks that JAM Project would be perfect, but then laments that there's probably not enough time to get them to make a song before the start of the Cell Games.note

As soon as Cell has finished that thought Genos and Saitama come out of the sky and land in the ring, much to the exasperation of Cell, who is growing increasingly annoyed by the various heroes challenging him. After some requisite introductions and insults are out of the way, Genos volunteers to fight Cell first. Saitama gives Genos a sideways glance and asks if Genos is really sure about doing that, considering how fights tend to go for Genos. Genos insists that due to performance upgrades he can defeat Cell, charges at the superpowered monster and is promptly backhanded into a mountain, much to the amusement of both Cell and Saitama.

Cell asks if Saitama intends to take a turn now, but Saitama says that he actually intends to wait for the tournament, since there's going to be a bunch of other strong guys around. Cell is pleased that someone is actually going to follow the rules for once, and is actually interested/intrigued by Saitama and the chance to fight him. Saitama feels the same way... right up until Cell happens to mention that the tournament is the next day, because Saitama is all out of food and the local grocery store is holding a major sale, so Saitama doesn't want to miss it.

Cell is incredulous as Saitama insists that they can fight another day after the tournament and seems to ignore or not take seriously Cell's insistence that if someone doesn't defeat him at the tournament, Cell will destroy the entire world. Saitama ignores Cell and goes to collect Genos and leave while an exasperated Cell remains in the ring.

Tropes include:

  • Anti-Climax: Done deliberately. Saitama and Cell never clash, first because Saitama intends to wait for the tournament, as a bunch of strong guys being there means more chances for an exciting fight, then because Saitama decides that he won't be able to attend the tournament.
  • Art Shift: As is common in the One Punch Man series, Saitama has periods of more and less detailed artwork depending on how serious he's being.
  • Boring, but Practical: When Genos declares that Saitama is there to end Cell's life, Cell asks how Saitama plans to do that, then references several of the attempts his past challengers have made. When Saitama nonchalantly says that he was going to punch Cell, Cell is visibly thrown for a moment by the simplicity and directness.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: At the very start of video, Cell mutters under his breath that he can't believe they're doing more of the Cell Games videos instead of making more regular episodes. He says it so low and so fast that it's difficult to catch and may be missed without the subtitles.
  • Call-Back: Cell makes references to several of his prior challengers and their attempts to defeat him.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Cell defeats Genos effortlessly. Both Cell and Saitama are completely unsurprised by this and say as much in perfect synchronization.
  • Disapproving Look:
    • Cell is starting to get annoyed about the opponents accepting his challenge. Specifically, he believes should have specified about people waiting until his scheduled date of the tournament.
    • Saitama gives Genos a sidelong glance when Genos volunteers to fight Cell, already expecting how this will end.
  • Interplay of Sex and Violence: As often happens with Cell. He compares not getting to fight Saitama to getting blue balls.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Just before Genos and Saitama arrive, Cell decides that JAM Project would be the perfect group to do a theme song for the Cell Games. JAM Project did the theme song for One Punch Man, the series that Genos and Saitama are from.
    • Cell calls Saitama "Caped Baldy" at one point, the embarrassing nickname that he was given by the Hero Association.
  • Plot Hole: At the start of the video Cell isn't sure what day it is, but later on he's completely sure that the tournament is the next day.
  • Skewed Priorities: Saitama decides he can't make it to the Cell Games because he'd miss out on a big sale at his grocery store. He also seems to think that the fight to determine if the world is destroyed can be more easily rescheduled than a grocery store trip, or that he couldn't do both on the same day.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: When Cell backhands Genos into a distant mountain, both Cell and Saitama have exactly the same reaction, which they speak aloud at the same time.
Cell/Saitama: Oh wow, who saw that one coming? Ha, you owe me a Hetap. Ha! You owe me two Hetaps! [both chuckle]
  • Storybreaker Power: Saitama, as later arcs of One Punch Man would show, is simply too powerful for Cell, so there needed to be an excuse for why he wouldn't just fight Cell and also wouldn't be present at the tournament, or everything else that happens would be rendered pointless.
  • Trash Talk: Cell takes several shots at Saitama's baldness, first by implying that Saitama is undergoing chemotherapy, then by comparing his appearance to Caillou. Saitama eventually responds by calling Cell "cockroach king".
  • The Worf Effect: As often happens in their own show, Genos volunteers to fight before Saitama and is defeated by the bad guy to showcase the threat.
