Recap / Dan Vs S 1 E 12 Dan Vs George Washington

Go To

Dan is convinced George Washington chopped down a palm tree which crushed his car. His proof? An axe with the initials "GW", and wig powder. His endeavors take him to Mt Vernon, hoping to blow up Washington's home.

This episode provides examples of the following Tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Elise admits that tagging along on this one has made her realize it's kind of fun engaging in Dan's antics and trying to keep him from doing any real damage to himself or others.
  • Agent Mulder / Agent Scully: Dan thoroughly believes in psychics. Chris, on the other hand, can sniff out a fake faster than a roast dinner.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unclear whether or not Dan was actually right about his revenge. On one hand he is correct about a lot of things pertaining to it (there is a ghost of George Washington, the ax at the scene of the crime matches up with one missing from Mount Vernon, the rest of the evidence, etc). On the other much of the evidence only goes as far as proving it as a possibility rather than anything definitive.
  • As Long as It Sounds Foreign: Madame Zelda, the Phony Psychic that Dan tries to chop up. (It Makes Sense in Context: She was pretending to be possessed by George Washington.)
Madame Zelda: You can't kill a spirit, you fool!
  • Ax-Crazy: Dan is more than a little dangerous with an axe in his hands. He really wants to chop up George Washington.
Chris: There is no way I'm gonna help you murder a psychic, even a fake one!
  • Book Dumb: Chris is surprisingly knowledgeable when it comes to American history.
  • Calling Your Attacks: "TEETH!"
  • Freak Out: Chris has a truly monumental Freak Out! in the prairies.
Chris: Arrrgh! Gahhh! Ha ha ha! So much sky! Ah! Ahh! Ah! Blahhh!
  • Funny Background Event: Dan and Elise discuss the situation, as Chris runs around in the background screaming from prairie madness. Happens again in the last scene, as Dan and Elise relax on the hood of the car and discuss his revenge.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Well, hogtied in the backseat, but same difference. With Chris properly restrained, Elise does the driving, and Dan admits she's a better conversationalist and driver. They also agree that it's nice having a conversation that in no way involves food.
Chris: Y'know, I can hear you guys.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Dan gets the better of a guard by throwing Washington's wooden teeth at him.
  • Manchild: Dan, quite a bit in this episode. Elise even likens him to a big kid.
  • Oh, Crap!: Madame Zelda when she realizes that Dan and Chris left without paying.
  • Phony Psychic : Madame Zelda, as to be expected from her "sacred warehouse" and her failure to answer questions properly.
  • Real After All: Dan is right about how it was George Washington's ghost that damaged his car by chopping down a palm tree.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Chris says this of Dan, revealing that he has an intricate yet random collection of knowledge available which makes it a shot in the dark about what he knows in regards to anything. He shoots down Elise's plan to take Dan to a rundown house and claim it's Mount Vernon because he may see through it due to this.
    • To prove his point Chris asks who built Mount Rushmore, which Dan accurately answers and notes the man's son completed it. Then Chris asks where it is and Dan guesses Ecuador.
  • That Poor Cat:
    Dan: Sorry, Mr Mumbles!
  • Twitchy Eye: Chris, while going mad from all the prairie space.
