Frank: Well, here we are, <Player's Name>! Bayou Bleu, in all its glory! Man, I can't say I've missed the musty smell of the swamps!

After Chief Marquez promotes the player to the Bayou Bleu, Frank and you come across the body of waiter Lee Dupree, impaled to a tree with skewers in the middle of the swamp.

Tropes:

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Yann during the Additional Investigation.
Yann: I'm curious as to what makes these particular persimmons so perfect...
  • Agent Scully: Frank doesn't believe in the supposed voodoo craze that is afflicting the Bayou even after Erikah puts a crippling spell on him that only gets cured whilst visiting another priest.
  • The Anticipator: When visiting Erikah, she says she's been expecting you since "all the eyes on the Bayou are extensions of her own."
  • Asshole Victim: As we learn throughout the case, Lee was not a nice person: he disrupted his uncle's business out of malice, made fun of Eugene, Bill, and Erikah due to their lifestyles, and harassed Shawna whilst also trying to force himself onto her.
Ignatius: Heck, he caused so much trouble down in the Bayou that everyone wanted rid of him.
  • Attack on the Heart: How the victim is killed thanks to a BBQ skewer.
  • Casanova Wannabe: Erikah describes Lee as this, hence why he requested a Love Potion from her.
Erikah: That kid made himself out to be a real Casanova! Not a girl in sight he didn't try to woo.
  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: According to Erikah, her voodoo spells work exactly like this.
Erikah: Are you saying my "mumbo jumbo" is having an effect on you, Detective? Voodoo relies on faith. If you do not believe, you should not feel pain...
  • Dead Guy on Display: The victim was left impaled in the middle of the swamp for everyone to see.
  • Evil Nephew: How Ignatius saw his nephew Lee since all he did was slacking off on the job and getting in trouble.
Ignatius: I won't deny I'm mighty relieved to get rid of that no good excuse for a nephew, but that don't mean I was the one who killed him.
  • Frame-Up: Shawna, the killer, tried to frame both Bill and Erikah by killing Lee in a way that would imply a voodoo priest did it. She even anonymously sent a voodoo doll of the victim that Bill made to divert the suspicion towards him.
  • Half-Witted Hillbilly: Eugene, a swamp resident with some clearly mental deficiencies who's been living on his own ever since his granny died. He's even called "Swamp Misfit" when you inspect him in the suspects list.
  • Hollywood Voodoo: This case introduces Bill Farnham and Erikah Mabayo, a voodoo shop owner and a voodoo priestess, respectively, who fully believe their items and magic powers to be real.
Bill: He kept calling me a stupid, witchdoctor hick! I wanted to show him just what voodoo can do... But I never thought it would kill him!
My magic must be stronger than I thought... maybe... just maybe... I possess the "gift of gifts"!
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The victim was impaled three times with BBQ skewers: one on each shoulder and a lethal one on his heart.
  • Killing in Self-Defense: Shawna claims she did this when Lee tried to force himself onto her. However, since she attempted to Frame-Up other people and left Lee on display, she still gets sentenced to a correctional for violent minors.
  • Love Potion: Erikah made one for Lee in exchange of some of his uncle's shrimp gumbo since he wanted Shawna to fall in love with him.
  • Rhyming Names: The victim, Lee Dupree.
  • Shout-Out: In the Voodoo Display scene, there is a magic mirror.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: As shown during the case, Frank and Russell have this kind of relationship with each other.
Frank: Alright, alright, let's get this message to him. But I don't trust the guy... And I don't like the way he sneers at me with that saccharine smile of his.
Russell: Oh, I love your surly idiocy at times, Frank! It's so 80's action hero!
  • Stalker with a Crush: Lee had been bullying and stalking Shawna and tried to force himself onto her when she rejected his advances, which led to his murder.
  • Supreme Chef: Ignatius' shrimp gumbo is so tasty it's enough to mellow Erikah Mabayo, a smug and pompous voodoo priestess, into submission.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: Erikah Mabayo insists on being called Priestess Mabayo, you puny mortal!
  • Voodoo Doll: During the investigation, a package containing a voodoo doll of the victim is sent to you, with needles mimicking exactly how he was killed. We later learn it was made by Bill, one of your suspects, to curse the victim, and Shawna sent it to you to frame him.
  • Who Murdered the Asshole: Every one of your suspects hated the victim one way or another.
