Recap / Codex Equus The Breezewing Conspiracy

Go To

Breezewing, an ancient Skylander, had been found alive, buried underground but managing to survive the passing of centuries in stasis. However, no one seemed to remember she even existed - not even those who was alive back when she was alive - nor did there seem to be any records of her and her fallen teammates' existence. As the Skylanders look into Breezewing and her disappearance, they would uncover an ancient conspiracy that would change many things they had previously presumed, and face those who would very much wish some truths remain buried...

The story can found here.

Tropes:

  • An Arm and a Leg: Stormfront has his right hoof sliced off by a berserk Breezewing when he tries to kill Sidewinder by ripping him in half.
  • Big Bad: Stormfront serves as the main villain, being the traitor and murderer of Breezewing's teammates and mastermind of the entire conspiracy.
  • Big Damn Heroes: While investigating the cave in Mt. Cloudbreak where Breezewing's friends died, Buzz Scales and Sidewinder were suddenly ambushed by both Drow and undead assassins sent to silence them. Not only are Buzz Scales and Sidewinder outnumbered, but Sidewinder also has a panic attack due to the last time he faced a group of enemies and attempts to flee in terror. Fortunately, Hol Horse comes to the Skylanders' rescue and helps them defeat the assassins.
  • Due to the Dead:
    • While Darkend was a supervillain who played a role in the murders of Breezewing's teammates, the Skylanders acknowledge that he didn't deserve to be betrayed and killed by Stormfront. Once the first battle against Stormfront is over, the Skylanders give Darkend's corpse a proper burial.
    • Sometime after that, the Skylanders would give the long-deceased Bulltrain, Aftershock, and Krayken a proper funeral, overseen by Hol Horse. These three would also be added to Skylander Academy's Hall of the Fallen, which paid tribute to Skylanders who died in battle or other ways.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Despite being a Storm Giant, Stormfront couldn't stand how Breezewing continued being praised as a hero despite being a "Tiny", a sentiment he extended to his other teammates, Bulltrain, Aftershock, and Krayken. Stormfront referring to all of them as "[Breezewing] and her freaky friends" during his Motive Rant indicates that his betrayal of them was motivated by Fantastic Racism as well.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Sidewinder was inspired to become a hero when he read stories about Hol Horse's adventures in the Second Age. When he meets Hol Horse in-person, Sidewinder gets extremely excited and gushes about his idol until Buzz Scales stops him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Breezewing is horrified and guilty when she learns of how she roughly handled Sidewinder while in her berserker state, and it's implied the Skylanders called her out on it. Unfortunately, her attempts to apologize end up being coldly rejected by Sidewinder himself, at least initially.
  • Orwellian Retcon: The entire gist of the plot is that somehow all traces of Breezewing and her team's existence had been erased from even the memories of Avalar, and it is up to the Skylanders to uncover both the mystery of Breezewing's forgotten past and what — or rather, WHO — is behind the conspiracy to do so.
  • Personality Powers: Having left his past as a Hitman with a Heart behind and Ascended to godhood, Hol Horse's Stand, Emperor, evolved to Emperor Reqiuem. Unlike Emperor, which is essentially lethal Psychic Powers in the form of a gun with bullets, Emperor Reqiuem gives Hol Horse the ability to change his weapons and fire non-lethal projectiles like tranquilizer darts.
  • Protagonist Title: The "Breezewing Conspiracy" event is named after Breezewing, one of the oldest Skylanders in existence and the subject of a malicious conspiracy dedicated to keep her name out of public memory.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Breezewing is later revealed to have the ability to enter a healing stasis mode when fatally injured, which her creators included as a failsafe when they made her. This ended up saving her life when Stormfront attempted to murder her and the other Skylanders on their team — while Bulltrain, Aftershock, and Krayken died, Breezewing was encased in crystal and remained dormant but alive for centuries until Sidewinder found her.
  • Spanner in the Works: Sidewinder is the entire reason why Stormfront's attempts to Retgone Breezewing and her friends go completely out the window. Sidewinder finding Breezewing's stasis crystal inside the caves of Mt. Cloudbreak led to her reawakening in the present day, provoking interest from the other Skylanders. And as more of Breezewing's past is discovered, the more Stormfront's plans unravel until he is exposed for the traitor he is. Realizing this provokes Stormfront into attempting to kill Sidewinder in a rage before the Skylanders and Hol Horse rescue him.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Despite her saving him from being killed by Stormfront, Sidewinder starts treating Breezewing coldly due to how roughly she handled him while in her berserker state. Even if Breezewing felt sorry for what she did, he rejected her apologies. This stops once Sidewinder is confronted by Gale Wings, Buzz Scales, and Hol Horse, who all coax him into revealing the real reasons for his behavior. While the Skylanders didn't let Breezewing off the hook for her actions, Sidewinder realizes how unfair he was being to her and apologizes to Breezewing once he reaches out to her.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: It's implied that following their first fight with Stormfront, the Skylanders called Breezewing out on how she roughly handled Sidewinder and nearly hurt him while in her berserker state. Hol Horse mentions in his talk with Sidewinder that the Skylanders didn't excuse Breezewing's actions even if she was hurting from Stormfront's betrayal.
