Recap / Code Geass: Paladins of Voltron, Chapter 23 "Zero's Return"

Go To

The Paladins have returned to Earth to bring the Black Knights into the fold. First, though, they have to save them at Narita.

  • Adaptational Context Change: Britannia still takes heavy casualties at Narita like in canon. But whereas it was due to an artificial landslide caused by the Black Knights in canon, here it’s because Voltron arrives and wipes the floor with Britannia.
  • Adapted Out: Because the Paladins bring Voltron with them to assist, the landslide that the Black Knights caused in canon doesn’t happen.
  • Admiring the Abomination: Lloyd Asphund is the only Britannian who isn’t horrified by the Lions, and actually gets excited watching them in action. He then has a major nerdgasm when the Lions combine into Voltron.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Once Cornelia recovers from her stupor upon seeing Voltron, she orders all of her remaining forces to open fire on it.
    Cornelia: Open Fire! OPEN FIRE!!!
  • The Bait: It's implied that the Black Knights would've been used as this to allow the JLF to escape had Voltron not intervened.
  • Bait-and-Switch: For a moment, it looks like a Britannian soldier might have killed Kallen with a gunshot. A moment later, it turns out the attack did absolutely no damage to her, she just flinched from the impact.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The JLF are about to be overwhelmed by Cornelia's forces...and then the Paladins show up to turn things around.
  • Butt-Monkey: Tamaki ends up as one in this chapter - Kallen subjects him to a Literal Ass-Kicking to get him into Aka, then he feints when Voltron is unveiled.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The Britannian forces get absolutely thrashed fighting the Lions, with Cornelia herself being destroyed in a fight against Lelouch.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: While Britannia as a whole gets wrecked at Narita, Nonette Enneagram manages to hold her own against Suzaku in Yoru, even though Suzaku not only has a better machine, but knows all of the Lancelot's specs due to being its former pilot.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Lelouch manages to become the first person to best Cornelia in a straight fight, as he uses Zen to defeat her effortlessly at Narita.
  • Dramatic Irony: Cornelia vows to find Lelouch and Nunnally no matter what, mentally noting that its not like he vanished off the face of the Earth. She’s completely unaware that Lelouch had indeed vanished off the face of the Earth.
  • He's Back!: Lelouch makes sure to reveal to the world that Zero has returned once the Battle for Narita ends.
  • Mood Whiplash: Kallen's reunion with the Black Knights goes from serious with her apparently be headshotted by a Britannian soldier to her grinning at her friends and asking how they are doing.
  • No-Sell:
    • The VARIS Rifle, one of the most powerful weapons in the Britannian arsenal, does absolutely no damage to Yoru.
    • When a Britannian soldier manages to shoot Kallen in the head, all it did was make her flinch from the impact.
    • When Cornelia orders a bombardment on Voltron, Lelouch orders Rai to form the shield. When Rai points out that the barrage won’t do any damage to Voltron, Lelouch says that they’ll just humor them, to let them think they’ll have a chance.
  • Royal Harem: Lelouch mentions his father's numerous consorts when asked by Rivalz how many siblings he has. He get's rather uncomfortable after Coran asks if such unions are normal and hastily returns everyone's attention to the briefing they were having.
  • Stunned Silence: Everyone from the Britannians, to the Black Knights, to the JLF, including Tohdoh, is left floored by the arrival of Voltron.
  • Wham Shot: At the end of the chapter, Schneizel el Britannia comments on the video showing Zero's Return, before turning his attention to a guest. Said guest is revealed to be Nunnally.
