Recap / Bowser's Koopalings S4 E1 Return Of The Koopa King

Go To

Original release date: September 13, 2019

The Koopalings find a book telling the story of how Bowser became the current king of the Koopa Kingdom.

Tropes:

  • The '90s: The episode is set in the year 1996, and there is a Time Skip to the year 1999. Of course, there are many references to things that were on people's minds in the 90s, such as Seinfeld and Richard Nixon's resignation speech.
  • Any Last Words?: Fryguy does this to Peach when he corners her in the castle's kitchen. She then says "want a drink?" and throws a cup filled with water at him.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Peach is a complete sweetheart, yet she is able to defeat both Fryguy and Triclyde.
  • Blatant Lies: The law forbids that the monarch of the Kingdom drinks alcohol. King Boo says that no one ever followed that rule.
  • Bookworm: Blue of the Toad Brigade.
  • Clashing Cousins: Bowser and Tyson clash in personality and beliefs. They understandibly hate each other.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: The Royal Koopa Rulebook, written over a thousand years ago by King Alfred I, the first monarch of the Koopa Kingdom, used to state that if a woman looked into the direction of another man, her husband could beat her.
  • Domesticated Dinosaurs: Bowser is seen riding a Dino Rhino following the Time Skip.
  • Embarrassing Middle Name: Clyde Adams reveals Tyson's middle name to be "Mariah".
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Clawgrip speaks very fondly of his wife and child.
  • Fake-Out Fade-Out: When Kamek, Bowser, Peach and the Toad Brigade are puzzled and confused as to how they are going to be able to return to the Koopa Kingdom, the end card appears as if we were left on a cliffhanger until Blue Toad utilises his plan of using the Starshroom to return home. This, in turn, continued the story for fifteen more minutes.
  • Fantastic Racism: The population of the Koopa Kingdom absolutely loathes Toads. Bowser explains that the Toad Brigade are friends to stop K. Rool and Big Boo from harming them.
  • Forgotten Framing Device: The episode begins with the Koopalings finding a book telling the story of how Bowser became king. The episode ends with Bowser and Peach going on vacation to Dinsoaur Land after he is officially crowned King rather than going back to the Koopalings in the present day.
  • The "Fun" in "Funeral": Bowser shows up to his father's funeral two hours late and drunk. He also pukes on Tyson's face.
  • Hypocrite: Tyson claims that Bowser is unfit to be the king of the Koopa Kingdom, but when he becomes the king himself, the only thing he does is raise taxes and ignore the general public's pleas for help, causing unemployment and criminal rates to skyrocket.
  • I Can't Believe I'm Saying This: Kamek when he tries to convince Bowser to go back to the Koopa Kingdom and claim the throne.
  • Kill It with Water: How Peach defeats Fryguy.
  • Living Dinosaurs: Dinosaur Land. Despite the dinosaurs having gone extinct in the rest of the world, Dinosaur Land was the only place left on Earth where they were able to survive, as seen with the Dino Rhinos and Dino-Torches.
  • Nice Girl: Peach might as well be the embodiment of kindness.
  • No Sympathy: Tyson couldn't care less about what happens to the residents of the Koopa Kingdom.
  • Parental Abandonment: According to Peach, the Toad Brigade found her abandoned as a child. She has no knowledge of her past and neither does she know who her parents are.
  • Spirit Advisor: When all seems lost, Bowser I's ghost tells his son not to give up hope and to beat Tyson at the race.
  • Time Skip: Bowser's life in Dinosaur Land started in 1996. It skips over to 1999.
  • Turn of the Millennium: Bowser becomes king of the Koopa Kingdom in the year 2000.
  • The Usurper: Tyson planned Bowser II's assasination in order to become king himself. Unfortunately for him, Bowser survived and returned to his homeland three years later.
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: Kamek thinks that Tyson's speech for Bowser Sr.'s funeral is more phoney than Richard Nixon's resignation speech.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Peach tells Bowser that not being as cultured as Tyson doesn't automatically make him a bad ruler and that he still has potential deep down.

How will Bowser get back home?

Bowser, Peach, Kamek, and the Toad Brigade had no clue to get to the Koopa Kingdom as they were lost, cueing the end screen as if this episode was left on an unresolved cliffhanger until Blue Toad uses the Starshroom that he built that will enable them to return to Bowser's Castle, adding an additional fifteen minutes to the story.

How well does it match the trope?
