Recap / Borderlands 2 Captain Scarlett C 09 X Marks The Spot

Go To

Being a late-game mission, there won't be marked spoilers. Proceed with caution. You Have Been Warned

After the Lighthouse is turned on, the location of the treasure is revealed. So, of course, Scarlett betrays the Vault Hunters by sending her best generals in order to kill them. Once said Generals are dispatched, the Vault Hunters travel back to Wurmwater in order to locate the treasure, enact vengeance on Scarlett, defeat the Leviathan and loot the Treasure. All in a day's work.

These final missions happen throughout the levels "Wurmwater", "The Leviathan" and "Leviathan's Lair", which house the side mission "Treasure of the Sands" and the challenges "Lost Lost Treasure", "Bleeding Scarlett" and, of course, "Cult of the Vault". In addition, there are two post-game missions, "Hyperius the Invincible" and "Master Gee the Invincible", that take place in the Washburne Refinery and Hayter's Folly areas, respectively, that are placed here for convenience.

The mission, the related sidequests and challenges, and the "The Leviathan" and "Leviathan's Lair" levels provide examples of:

  • Artificial Stupidity: Master Gee, one of the DLC's two Super Bosses, will not attack you if you hide behind a rock by the entrance to his arena. Considering the battle is won by having him take a damage over time effect that lasts the whole fight, he can be beaten by merely waiting for him to die.
  • Call-Back: In the boss fight against Roscoe, who turns out to be a Rakk Hive, the BGM used is "The Rakk Hive Emerges". The same track was used in the first game during the boss fight against a Rakk Hive near the climax.
  • Developer's Foresight: Not turning either "X Marks The Spot" or "Treasure of the Vault" after raiding the Treasure Cave, exiting and re-entering the Leviathan's Lair will have the player get out naturally of the Leviathan (preventing players from re-fighting Roscoe and re-triggering Scarlett leaving the Greed Legendary pistol), play the Leviathan's introductory cutscene, see the Leviathan die saving the player the need to fight it... but the door to the Treasure Cave will be locked, preventing players to continuously raid the chests in the cave.
  • Eaten Alive: How the players enter The Leviathan, from "Wurmwater", after approaching the X.
  • Fission Mailed: "X Marks The Spot" involves you finding the "marked spot" that should lead to a vault full of loot. Instead, you get Eaten Alive by Leviathan. The best part? He is taking you and her straight to the Vault, but the BEST part is... Do you remember her pet Roscoe? She found him!
  • Legacy Boss Battle: Roscoe is a domesticated Rakk Hive. The Rakk Hive was a late game boss for Borderlands.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: At the climax, Scarlett drops her weapon, a Legendary-tier pistol called "Greed". She doesn't want you to pick it, because "that is stealing, and stealing is wrong". Its Flavor Text is even "Thief".
  • Permanently Missable Content:
    • The final level has an area that can only be accessed during the missions "X Marks The Spot" and "Treasure of the Sands", which are the missions where both Roscoe and the Leviathan are fought. After the Leviathan is defeated, a gate in the map opens, revealing a room filled to the brim with weapon chests. Outside of these missions, not only the Leviathan won't respawn, thus preventing the player to use the Leviathan's arm as a bridge, but the gate will remain closed even if the player exited and re-loaded the game without turning in either mission.
    • Furthermore, there are two area-specific challenges which can only be completed during the aforementioned missions: "Bleeding Scarlett" requires the player to defeat Roscoe in less than a minute, and "Lost Lost Treasure" requires the player to find the super secret chamber in the Chamber of the Lost Treasure.
  • Superboss:
    • Hyperius the Invincible, a beefed up Hyperion Engineer fought at the "Washburn Refinery" level, costs 8 Eridium units.
    • Master Gee the Invincible, a beefed up pirate fought at the "Hayter's Folly" level, also costs 8 Eridium units.
  • The Unfought: Captain Scarlett is never faced against, not even at the end of her story.
  • Touched by Vorlons: Shade thinks this happened to Hyperious the Invincible. Probably the case of Master Gee as well.
  • Vagina Dentata: The final two bosses are a Rakk hive and the Leviathan. For the first one, see the original Borderlands. The second resembles a phallus within a vagina, both with teeth, and has "arms" that bend in such a way it resembles spread legs.
  • "X" Marks the Spot: The huge X in Wurmwater, and also the name of this mission.
