Game time!

Anne must learn the value of teamwork to win the town's annual bugball game.

This episode has examples of:

  • Big Game: The bugball game takes place on the equivalent of Thanksgiving, and the Farmers team loses every year.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The blindfolded trust exercise, where Anne has to listen to her teammates to make it to the goal, comes in handy when she gets blinded during the game.
  • Don't Explain the Joke: Toadstool makes a joke about the farmers "soiling themselves", then explains how it's funny because they're farmers.
  • Down to the Last Play: The game is tied at 9 to 9 with Sprig scoring the winning goal.
  • Drench Celebration: After the game, Anne is drenched in Centipede-ade. Which has live centipedes in it, to Anne's horror. She finds it worse than the turkey suits that the losers have to wear.
  • Fictional Sport: Bugball, which as Anne notes, is similar to basketball. And yes, the ball is an actual living bug.
  • Goofy Suit: The losers of the bugball game have to wear turkey costumes.
  • A Handful for an Eye: Anne gets blinding powder thrown in her eyes to incapacitate her. Later on, she seems to be crying while giving a Rousing Speech, but she explains that she's not crying, her eyes are just watering like crazy.
  • Hidden Depths: Toadie actually is "surprisingly good" at playing the game.
  • It's All About Me: Anne was never good at team sports, preferring sports like tennis where she can play by herself. In an impromptu practice match with the Townies, her showboating and ball-hogging cost them the game. With the other's help, however, she becomes a team player.
  • One-Word Vocabulary: Chuck almost never says anything other than "I grow tulips."
  • Opposing Sports Team: The Townies team, led by Mayor Toadstool.
  • Ordered to Cheat: Toadstool tells his team they have to cheat in order to win. Toady "takes one for the team" by throwing blinding powder into Anne's face, getting him disqualified but also putting the farmers' best player out of commission (or so they think).
  • Mix-and-Match Critter: This episode features a giant turkey with some bug mixed into its genes. When Anne sees it, she first shudders, then says, "Eh, who am I kidding, I'll eat it."
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: The Farmers team consisting of Hop Pop, Sprig, Mrs. Croaker, and the tulip seller.
  • Shout-Out: Two to Michael Jordan. First, one of the Townie players is named Frog Jordan. Second, as Sprig is scoring the final goal, he jumps in the air with his tongue hanging out, a signature move of Jordan's.
  • Spit Take: Anne when she drinks Centipede-ade and realizes what's in it. She spits right on Sprig's head.
    Sprig: Ah, refreshing.
  • Team Spirit: Anne has to work together with her team to win.
  • You Mean "Xmas": As Anne notes, Harvest Day is basically the Amphibia-equivalent to Thanksgiving.
