Basic Trope: A character hates a group of people because people belonging to that group were involved in some tragic event in the character's past.

  • Straight: Bob hates all Hat People because his entire family was killed by a group of Hat People.
  • Exaggerated: Bob hates all Hat People because his entire family died on "National Hat People Day".
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob is distrustful towards Hat People because he was almost killed by a Hat Person once.
    • Bob doesn't hate Hat People, but is rather scared of them due to his negative experiences.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
    • Hat People hate Bob because of his family.
    • Bob loves the Hat People because a group of Hat People saved his life.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob's family was killed by Hat People, but Bob is willing to work with the Hat Police to look for the killers.
    • Bob's family shows up and calls him out for inventing a sob story to justify his bigotry.
  • Double Subverted:
    • ...Until Bob realizes the Hat Police were the ones responsible for killing his family.
    • Bob sees the Hat Police as the exception and still despises all other Hat People.
    • The truth is actually even more painful: Bob's wife was raped by a Hat Person, which she didn't want to talk about because of her trauma.
  • Parodied: Bob hates Hat People because Hat Teenagers keep vandalizing his property.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • The fact that the murderers of Bob's family being Hat People is never brought up by Bob.
    • Bob is a Hat Person himself.
  • Enforced:
    • Bob's hatred of Hat People is the precursor to an all-out war between Planet Earth and Planet Hat.
    • The creators of the series want Bob to overcome his discriminatory views at some point, and think that giving him a sympathetic reason for his hatred of Hat People would be a good way to set this up.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: An Anti-Hat Bigot came to bob when grief made him vulnerable and suggested he "avenge" his family by fighting Hat People.
  • Exploited: An Anti-Hat People Group uses Bob's testimony as propaganda for their agenda.
  • Defied: "Don't be ridiculous. Hat People didn't kill my family, a bunch of bloodthirsty psychopaths did!"
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed:
    • Bob knows he'll never get justice for his family, either because the culprits are long gone or dead by some other means, but he has to take out his anger on somebody.
    • Bob murders an innocent family of Hat People, thereby becoming the very thing he hates.
    • Bob is just prejudiced. The death of his family is an excuse.
  • Reconstructed: Bob believes Thou Shalt Not Kill, so he will never sink to the level of killing those he is prejudiced against.
  • Implied: Someone calls Bob out on his prejudice, and he claims to have a good reason for it.
