Playing With / Egypt Is Still Ancient

Go To

Basic Trope: Egypt hasn't changed since ancient times.

  • Straight: Egypt is still aesthetically ancient and its surroundings are still sand and deserts.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Egypt is still ancient, in the far future.
    • Egypt is still in the stone age.
    • All the places in the mediterranean known for being "old" have barely changed at all. Greece still has hunks and amazonian beauties, Rome still has an active colosseum, and much more.
  • Downplayed:
    • Egypt looks ancient, in downtown Cairo. The uptown parts of the city is modern.
    • Egypt looks ancient while its neighbors are in the "Arabian Nights" Days.
  • Justified:
    • Egypt is trapped in a time limbo bubble created by a wizard, or a fairy (or possibly a fairy wizard), thus preventing them to advance to the modern age.
    • The setting is an Alternate History where Islam never got a chance to spread.
    • The modern Egyptian government knows this is what the tourists want so they set up what's effectively a theme park version of Egypt as a tourist trap.
  • Inverted:
    • Egypt looks like Qurac in ancient times.
    • Egypt is quite advanced, but the rest of the world has some catching up to do.
    • Every present-day country, except for Egypt, is still ruled by ancient civilizations, such as Italy looks like during the times of ancient Rome.
  • Subverted:
    • Egypt is in fact modern, they just make themselves look ancient for tourists.
    • What was thought to be Egypt is actually an Ancient Egypt-like planet.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Turns out they only recently adopted modern technology.
    • Which turns out to be Earth building Egypt following nuclear fallout.
  • Parodied:
  • Parodied and Inverted: The series is apparently set during Gamal Abdel Nasser's rule... but the date is during the Old Kingdom of Egypt.
  • Zig-Zagged: Egypt has modern technology, but the designs of the buildings still have an ancient aesthetic.
  • Averted: Egypt is portrayed in a realistically modern way filled with mosques and skyscrapers.
  • Enforced:
    • "Pyramids are awesome!"
    • The creator of the work doesn't realize that Egypt is no longer ancient.
    • The creator of the work doesn't know enough about modern Egypt, so they rely on Small Reference Pools.
  • Lampshaded: "You know, with all the time they've had to advance, you'd think they would've invented cars by now."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: A Fish out of Temporal Water is taken to Egypt to help adjust.
  • Defied: "Oh grow up, things don't stay the same forever!"
  • Discussed: "Where are the anthropologists?" "They're figuring out how Egyptian culture was static for the past five millennia"
  • Conversed: "I know people typically think of pyramids and crap when they think of Egypt, but come on, we're not idiots! Civilizations advance!"
  • Deconstructed: An Egypt millennia behind the curve, with vast fertile farmland winds up conquered extremely quickly. Even without any displacement or genocide they wind up massively outnumbered by the newcomers.
