note

Sonic Revolution was a game released near the end of 2007 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the Wii made to celebrate the 16th anniversary of the franchise. The game was originally planned to come out back at the end of 2006 for the 15th anniversary. While originally rushing production in order to meet time constraints, a leaked beta went online and caused an uproar among those who played it, getting far enough that SEGA put their foot down on the game's current production. Realizing they barely avoided a disaster for the Sonic franchise, SEGA reached out to members of the Sonic community, asking for them to play through the game and get an in-depth analysis of the problem. The main issues included several colossal glitches in game-play, the lackluster and confusing execution of the story, and the overall unemotional presentation. This led to an additional year of story revisions, game fixes and even some from scratch recoding. In exchange from help from Nintendo, it was also given a Wii release.

This led to the highly commercially and critically-acclaimed release of Sonic Revolution, and is considered to be a hall-mark game and just what Sonic needed to break through the Polygon Ceiling.

Mad scientist Dr. Eggman has a new plan to Take Over the World: capture Princess Elise, the ruler of the country of Soleanna and the girl to the "Flames of Disaster", and combine her power with the seven Chaos Emeralds so he can rule over all time and space. Chronic Hero Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower were in town for the local festival and end up rescuing Princess Elise from the clutches of Dr. Eggman, and now must protect her while investigating theses 'Flames of Disaster.'

Meanwhile, a telekinetic hedgehog from the future named Silver has traveled back in time with his best friend Blaze. Their goal is to Set Right What Once Went Wrong and prevent their Bad Future by destroying "The Iblis Trigger", which Silver believes to be Sonic The Hedgehog. While this is happening, local Anti-Hero Shadow The Hedgehog must contend with a mysterious evil Doppelgänger calling itself "Mephiles The Dark", who seeks to activate "The Iblis Trigger" and plunge the future into despair.

This game exhibits examples of:

  • Rule of Symbolism: Several examples, namely toward the villain. It's been heavily implied, but not outright confirmed, that Mepiles is based off of Mephistopheles and Iblis was based off of Satan (more specifically, Shaytan, the Islamic incarnation). In fact, Solaris has several examples of Lucifer-like imagery.
