To Win Her Hand
is an Avatar: The Last Airbender AU in which Firelord Sozin never grew hungry for power and sought to Take Over the World, instead coming up with the idea to bring the four nations together through more peaceful methods, an idea which Avatar Roku supported in full. In the present day, Chief Hakoda is inviting several people to the Southern Water Tribe for a chance to prove themselves worthy of marrying his daughter Katara; a betrothal contest that Avatar Aang has not been invited to.
This fanfic provides examples of:
- Adaptational Heroism: Azula, Zhao, Hama, Ozai, Azulon, and Sozin receive this treatment.
- Alternate Universe: Until roughly 80 ASC (After Sozin's Comet), there was no Southern Water Tribe (no word yet on the Foggy Swamp Tribe). Also, Aang and Gyatso were born after Sozin's Comet, leading to Aang being the same age as in canon compared to everyone else.
- Arranged Marriage: Katara and whoever wins the betrothal contest. Also Pakku/Kanna, Zhao/Nauja, and Hakoda/Kya.
- For Want Of A Nail: Sozin never grew hungry for power, and sought to unite the world through more peaceful means.
- Happily Married: Hakoda/Kya, Sokka/Yue, and Ozai/Ursa are all this.
- Love at First Sight: Averted by Sokka and Yue, surprisingly; initially, the two disliked each other, and it took a while for the two to fall in love.
- No Antagonist: There isn't really anyone that's shown up yet who could be considered a bad guy.
- Original Character: There are a few of these.
- Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Sokka and Yue are this, as they were dating even before they were married to each other.
- Really Royalty Reveal: In-Universe when Gyatso surprises Aang by referring to Katara as the Princess of the Southern Water Tribe.
- Slap-Slap-Kiss: Zhao and his wife Nauja are apparently this.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Lu Ten, Azulon, the Air Nomads as a whole, Yue, Kya, and Roku.
- Sugar Bowl: This world has many of the villains having Adaptational Heroism, dead characters Spared by the Adaptation, Ba Sing Se is apparently not under Long Feng's control, and international cooperation is at an all time high: the worst part of this world seen so far is the continuation of the Arranged Marriage practice.
- The Chief's Daughter: Both Yue and Katara.
- The Chooser of the One: According to Zuko, the spirits choose the Avatar based off of their character.
- Unexpected Successor: Iroh turned down the offer to become Firelord, leading to Ozai taking the throne after Azulon stepped down.
