Go To

"Runaways" is a A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones fanfic where Theon and Sansa run away together so that Sansa can't marry Joffrey.

Tropes that appear in this fanfic:

  • Adaptational Villainy: Tywin and Cersei's views on the betrothal between Joffrey and Sansa weren't known in the books. Here, they're actively forcing the issue in a scheme to leave the Starks perpetually in debt to the Lannisters.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Sansa calls Theon "Dearheart".
  • Age Lift: Sansa is 16 instead of 11 (books) or 13 (show) at the beginning.
  • Ascended Extra: Jeyne Poole is upgraded from being a background/supporting character in the books (and an extra in the show) to becoming a straight-up Lancer for Sansa and spy for the Starks.
  • Attempted Rape:
    • Joffrey attempts to have his way with Sansa before being beaten by Theon.
    • Later on, Cersei suggests to Joffrey that he accost Sansa in her room and force her to marry him by being there. While Joffrey is shocked at first, he tries the plan out.
  • Elopement: Sansa and Theon elope so Sansa doesn't have to marry Joffrey after he assaults her.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Theon.
"This is how this was always going to end, my head on a Stark block. It was fated from the start, but I want you to know, I loved her true. Do you believe me?"
  • Freudian Trio: The three lords Balon sends to Winterfell to intercede on Theon's behalf.
    • Ego: Asha, the leader who mediates between her two uncles.
    • Superego: Rodrik Harlaw, who prepares Theon's defense through rules of law.
    • Id: Victarion, who prepares a show of force if their demands are not met.
  • The Hero Dies: Theon is executed by Ned.
  • Insatiable Newlyweds: When Theon and Sansa are finally caught, the innkeeper complains to Ned that they make a lot of noise while in bed.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Joffrey dies choking at a feast, with the possibility of poison.
  • Ladykiller in Love: Theon is still known for getting around, but he wants to settle down with Sansa.
  • Parental Marriage Veto: Ned and Catelyn both put their foot down on Theon courting Sansa.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Sansa bears twin sons after Theon's execution.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Cersei is heard speaking of adding abortifacients to Sansa's food like tansy and pennyroyal to make her miscarry Theon's child.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Asha when Victarion butts in during the trial and reveals the vial of silver flame.
  • Time Skip: The epilogue takes place five years after Theon's execution.
  • White-Collar Crime: Tywin Lannister is revealed to be behind a scheme where the Starks would be forced to pay high sums of money for Joffrey and Sansa's wedding with extremely high (the text refers to it as extortionate) interest rates that the North would never be able to pay back.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Theon and Sansa are captured when they run out of money and can't scrape together enough to take a ship to the Iron Islands.
  • You Remind Me of X: Renly is persuaded to help Sansa when he compares his own situation with Loras to Theon and Sansa's plight.
