On Christmas Eve as the CMC prepare to make more posts as "Anon-a-Miss", the ghosts of Apple Bloom's parents show up and warn them to confess their involvement as Anon-a-Miss and make things right. When they refuse, the three are visited by three ghosts that night.
An Anon-a-Miss Carol provides examples of:
- Actor Allusion: Apple Bloom's middle name is Michelle, after her VA Michelle Creber.
- Adaptation Expansion: When the Christmas past ghost (Somnambula) shows the human CMC Sunset's past, more on it from "The Fall of Sunset Shimmer" is elaborated on. Sunset was abandoned by her birth mother as a baby and sent to an orphanage run by the pony version of Principal Cinch where Cinch proceeded to emotionally abuse her with her strict and elitist behavior and persuading possible parents not to adopt Sunset due to considering her too valuable to let go. Eventually, Sunset wised up to Cinch's schemes and ran away from the orphanage to live on her own for a few years. When she tried to apply for Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, Upper Crust sabotaged her "Synchronized Dancing Cats" spell just to ensure she would be let in over her. Said spell did attract the attention of Princess Celestia who found the spell to be the funniest thing in school in a while and eventually decided to take Sunset in as her student. While Sunset and Celestia would eventually develop into a close mother-daughter esque relationship, this would begin to crumble on the Hearth's Warming Eve before the events of "The Fall of Sunset Shimmer" where Celestia refused to spend the holidays with Sunset and wanting to instead bond with Cadance (who had recently become an alicorn) during that time which led into an argument with Sunset begging Celestia on the spot to make her an alicorn out of jealousy for Cadance but denied due to not earning it at the time. Her jealousy on Celestia's growing bond with Cadance surpassing the one she had with her combined with resentment over Upper Crust constantly bullying her and trying to take advantage of her connection to Celestia and dealing with students only wanting to befriend her for her connection to Celestia would ultimately lead to Sunset's Start of Darkness that was shown in "The Fall of Sunset Shimmer".
- Adaptational Sexuality: While Rainbow Dash's sexual orientation was never specified in canon (aside from her pony counterpart being implied to have married Applejack in the Time Skip of the series finale), here she is indicated to be lesbian who had been in secret relationships with Lightning Dust and Gilda as a freshman.
- Bad Future: In the future the future Christmas ghost shows the CMC if they don't make things right for their Anon-a-Miss actions, Sunset was beaten to death by Gilda and the human Diamond Dogs due to Apple Bloom making an Anon-a-Miss post accusing Gilda of being a lesbian with a crush on Rainbow Dash (with Gilda believing Sunset posted it), the Rainbooms are depressed over not believing Sunset's pleas on her not being Anon-a-Miss with Applejack in particular taking it the hardest due to Parting-Words Regret, Granny Smith died of a broken heart upon finding out about Apple Bloom's involvement in Anon-a-Miss, Cinch committed Sci-Twi to an insane asylum when she tried to prove Equestrian magic was real which caused Cadance to quit Crystal Prep in response, several students at CHS transfer due to not trusting each other with the Anon-a-Miss incident, Princess Twilight stopped associating with the Rainbooms due to resenting them for how they treated Sunset for the Anon-a-Miss situation, and the human CMC were eventually found out and sent to solitary confinement separately for life as a result.
- Berserk Button: Sunset accidentally hits this for Applejack when she tries to bring up the idea that Apple Bloom may be involved in "Anon-a-Miss" which leads Applejack to snap at her to the point of claiming Sunset isn't family and telling her to leave.
- Despair Event Horizon: Everyone has hit this in the Bad Future that the future Christmas ghost shows.
- Forced Out of the Closet: Octavia and Vinyl Scratch are secretly a couple. When the CMC expose their relationship on Anon-A-Miss, this leads Octavia's parents to kick her out due to homophobia. Thankfully once the CMC have their Heel Realization with the ghosts, they manage to find Octavia's aunt who lives near CHS and convince her to let Octavia live with her.
- Happily Adopted: As a way of making amends with Sunset and finding out about her family situation, the Apple family decides to officially adopt her in the end of the story.
- Official Couple: Lyra and Bon Bon become this in the Time Skip.
- Parting-Words Regret: In the Bad Future, Applejack is devastated and remorseful for snapping so harshly at Sunset, which was the last time she and the Rainbooms saw her before she was beaten to death by Gilda and her goons.
- Stable Time Loop: While they end up finding out about Sci-Twi's situation when visited by the present ghost, the CMC are forced to keep it a secret to avoid a time paradox which would explain why they are Out of Focus during the events of My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Friendship Games.
- Time Skip: The final chapter has one taking place a year after this story's events.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Sunset is shown to have been a sweet kid, though years of emotional abuse by pony Cinch and Upper Crust, lack of friends (with people only wanting to associate with her for being with Celestia), and jealousy on Celestia's closer relationship with Cadance embittered her into the arrogant teenager we see her as by the first movie's events.
- Yet Another Christmas Carol: This fic's story is based on that of "A Christmas Carol".
