Tropes applying to his works:
- Old Shame: Scales seems to be a touchy subject for him. So much so that it became a running joke with him and his It cast mates.
- Queer Character, Queer Actor: Before coming out, he'd played Fraser in We Are Who We Are, who is gay or bi.
- Time-Shifted Actor: He frequently played characters who grow up over the course of the story, such as in Tales of Halloween, Me, myself and I, Beautiful Boy and both chapters of It. Also applies to SHAZAM! in a way, with his adult superhero form being played by Adam Brody.
