Set 20 years after the events of Firefly, Serenity soars the ‘Verse once again with a new captain - Emma, the daughter of Wash and Zoe! The old crew of Serenity has gone their own way and now Emma is working to prove herself to Zoe, alongside a new crew of castaways and misfits just trying to stay afloat.

But when Serenity takes a job from a familiar face, they discover that their new, living, breathing cargo is far more than they bargained for…and might bring them into conflict with Alliance once again!

This Comic Provides Examples Of The Following Tropes:

  • Apocalypse How: For the first time in the franchise, we get a glimpse of exactly what was happening on Earth-That-Was that warranted species-wide exodus: for one thing, most of San Francisco is apparently underwater due to rising ocean levels - people live in apartment-boxes built into the towers of the Golden Gate, because there's no room left anywhere else.
  • Babies Ever After: Simon and Kaylee have retired to a farm, with a rambunctious pair of kids. A boy named Teddy and a girl named May.
  • Call-Back: Emma is seen in Issue 2 playing with her father's dinosaurs.
  • Call to Agriculture: Zoe is more than a little surprised at Simon of all people getting down and dirty as a farm hand.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: The one image we get of Mal is of him with his head on a bar counter, possibly passed out from the alcohol bottle next to him.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Rasalia was born and raised on Earth-That-Was before the mass human exodus - she was one of the terraformers cryogencially frozen for the long trip to the 'Verse, but for some reason has only very recently been unfrozen by Blue Sun.
  • Gentle Giant: Salo is explicitly called such by Zoe - he's easily the most physically imposing of the new crew, but his Establishing Character Moment shows him meditating in his quarters, and he's the most concerned for the girl they took from the Blue Sun out of all the Serenity crew.
  • Human Popsicle: How people got back and forth between Earth-That-Was and the 'Verse: before they could start the exodus in full, they had to terraform the new planets, which involved sending people on century-long journeys to the new system to work, all while their loved-ones back home received pay from Blue Sun.
  • Lost Language: Spanish has all but died as a language, with only a few old-timers on backwater worlds keeping it alive. Even that's become a choppy, half-forgotten shadow. Salo knows just enough from his grandmother to recognize it, so he's understandably surprised when the girl they rescue from the Blue Sun speaks it apparently fluently.
  • Sleeper Ship: The arkships, humanity's way to make the one-hundred year journey to the 'Verse, and have a quasi-mythical status among living humans. Built and provided for, naturally, by the Blue Sun Corporation.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: Those Serenity crew-members who surived the events of the movie have gone their separate ways in the decades since - Kaylee and Simon retiring to a farm, Inara having become a priestess, while River shows up in the last issue. Jayne and Mal's fates remain unknown. Only Zoe continues to fly the Serenity. Simon even comments that they haven't heard from Zoe or the Serenity in ten years.
  • Took a Level in Cynic: Not that Zoe was ever the idealist of the crew, but losing Wash, raising Emma as a single mother, and (it's implied) the Serenity crew's disbandment have clearly taken a toll on her.
Kaylee: (Wash) was a good man. That's the goodness I see shinin' back when I look at your girl.
Zoe: What'd he ever get for all that goodness? Slow death at the end of a Reaver's spear... And what'd I get? A ship barely worth her wait in rust, a daughter who doesn't apreciate the work it takes to stay afloat... that's what goodness get's you.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Lu calls Emma out in the second issue for pulling a dare-devil stunt with the Sereninty... while he was still outside of it.
  • We Named the Monkey "Jack": Simon and Kaylee named their farm dog "Jayne."
    Zoe: "Jayne?"
Simon: Dumb and smelly and loves to eat.
