Members of the Enginekrafters Co-Op

    Zhina

Zhina

One of the members of the tinker shop, a Kindah girl studying minglinglore and enginekraft and the chief apprentice. She and Niquiat, while not openly dating, are starting a relationship.

  • Never Bareheaded: Being the world's version of Muslim, Zhina always wears a headscarf.
  • Wrench Wench: Zhina is skilled in mechanics; she has built multiple things and wants to build an airship, working on draft plans for it.

    Jorgen

Jorgen

One of the founding members of the tinker shop, a middle-aged Anglish man who mostly fixes engines.

  • Brick Joke: When he first meets Anequs (when she's staying with her brother Niquiat before her first term) the first words out of his mouth in front of her are "Sweet Fyra's tits, it's a dragon!" When she later visits with Theod, Marta, and Sander—and all their dragons with them—the first words he says are "Sweet Fyra's tits, it's four dragons!" Albeit a lot less shocked than before.

    Ekaitz

Ekaitz

One of the members of the tinker shop, a Vakoshish.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: To Anequs, even though it's just quick references. As soon as they meet, he says he didn't know that Niquiat's sister was "so beautiful," which she acknowledges with only a head nod. Later Zhina mentions that they got gold from a ring he provided, but no more is said about why he got it in the first place.

    Strida

Strida

One of the members of the tinker shop, an Anglish girl, who is skilled in blacksmithing.

  • Wrench Wench: Like Zhina, Strida is skilled with tools and tinkering, specifically blacksmithing.

Government

    Jarl Leiknir Joervasson

Jarl Leiknir Joervasson

The jarl—ruler—of Vaster Hold, and representative of High King Yngvarr. A Freemensthede who succeeded the prior jarl, Kjeld Niklasson, in 1836.

  • Assassination Attempt: Made against him soon after he holds council. He survives, with the would-be assassin destroyed crisply by Kasaqua.
  • First-Name Basis: With Frau Kuiper; through a good portion of the meeting, he calls her by her first name, Karina.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He considers all smallfolk as citizens, nackie and Norsemen alike—when five of them are killed along with the Anglish Hakan Gilvertsson in a fight, he speaks of all six of the dead as his citizens. When Anequs speaks up to ask a question of the council—even after being warned not to speak unless spoken to by Frau Kuiper—he laughs and then tells her to go ahead. Then, when Anequs then asks Thane Stafn if the Anglish plan to provoke the Masquisit to violence the way they did the Naquisit in 1825—and he loses his temper in the process—Jarl Joervasson says to Frau Kuiper that he likes Anequs; she's got fire. He also calls out the thanes for their lax and appalling behavior that's led to the situations that have occurred (including neglecting the peoples of Mask and Nack Island and Thane Stafn for his editorial letter that he didn't approve of) and openly confronts them all, saying the prior jarl let them rule their thedes as if they were jarls themselves. He issues statement after the assassination attempt that all persons on outlying islands of Lindmarden—namely, Nack and Mask Island—are citizens of the country and thus any violent action taken would be addressed legally the same as any Anglishman.

    Thane Arjan Stafn

Thane Arjan Stafn

Thane of Vastergot, and Ivar Stafn's father. A member of the Ravens of Joden, who believe they have the right to return to colonizing other lands in the ways of their ancestors—through raids and slaughter.

Others

    Ingrid Hakansdottir

Ingrid Hakansdottir

A half-nackie girl who is ten years old; her mother is descended from the daughter of the ruler of the Naregannisit and her father is Anglish, and she has an older brother, Aksel. She first writes to Anequs after an article is written about her in the Vastergot Weekly Gazette, and they start a correspondence and friendship. She wants to be a dragoneer like Anequs, despite it being a very long shot.

  • Disappeared Dad: Her father Hakan Gilvertsson is killed in a mead hall brawl shortly after she meets Anequs for the first time, as part of the outcry from her attending Fyrafax with Anglish children.
  • Pen Pals: How she and Anequs start out communicating, after Anequs has an article published about her to improve her (and Theod's) image during her first term. The two don't meet face to face until Fyrafax, when Anequs invites her to attend.

    Lisbet Jansen

Lisbet Jansen

The older sister of Sander Jansen.

  • Big Brother Instinct: She is—unlike her mother—not ashamed of Sander or his behavior, and tries to assist him and accept his differences where their mother refuses. When her mother states that Lisbet will never marry properly if Sander can't make a decent presentation, Lisbet snaps back that she won't marry any man who says awful things about her younger brother.

    Frau Jansen

Frau Jansen

The mother of Lisbet and Sander Jansen, a widow since her husband's passing. She is also the niece of Elsie Brinkerhoff.

  • My Beloved Smother: Frau Jansen, especially to Sander and especially regarding his autism. She often refuses to let him have his tablet to write his communication as he prefers, lectures him for "blurting" rather than speaking smoothly, and frequently makes him go to his room at home to keep him out of the public eye. She even delayed Lisbet's coming out two years—while she said it was to hone Lisbet's accomplishments, the truth is because she thinks that Sander cannot make a good presentation and will hold Lisbet back from good marriage. Lisbet was also sent away to primary school for years so she wouldn't be "tainted" by Sander.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Anequs first meets Frau Jansen at the meeting for students and parents on the first day of school. Frau Jansen lectures her son Sander about making introductions properly, gripping his shoulder tightly to correct him. When Anequs recognizes the kind of dragon Inga is, she reacts as if Anequs has done a fascinating trick, calling her a "dear creature" before telling Frau Brinkenhoff that she and Karina are dear to take in the "savage" children to educate them properly. This is followed by asking Anequs if Vastergot is a grand city to her since she's lived in "a little bark house" her whole life. This shows that she's looks down on nackies as if they were primitive, unadvanced, simple people in need of Anglish guidance to be civilized, and suppresses her son's autism out of her own shame about it.
  • Riches to Rags: The cost of Sander's governess Miss Keitl for four years—she charged the family a large amount of money to teach him because of his autism and poor behavior—and the purchase of Inga's egg have led to the Jansens being financially crippled, but Frau Jansen won't admit it.
  • Unnamed Parent: She is only referred to as Frau ("Mrs.") Jansen.

    Dagny Sørensen

Dagny Sørensen

The older sister of Niklas Sørensen, and part of the influential Vastergot Sørensen family.

  • Idle Rich: Dagny comes from enough money to spend her whole day doing nothing but hosting parties for ladies of higher society and going about town.
  • Old Money: Part of the vastly wealthy and influential Sørensens; they're known as the Vastergot Sørensens.
  • Proper Lady: Very much so; Dagny has influence and pull and is nothing less than absolutely proper.
  • Socialite: As part of the wealthy Vastergot Sørensen family, Marta states that Dagny is the arbiter of who is and isn't connected in polite society among young women. Marta even takes it personally when she's not invited to a tea party, as the snub implies she's not good enough—or more damning, too strange now, as a dragoneer and later seen being friendly with Anequs, Theod, and Sander—to be included in Dagny's social circle.
