Julian Vendral / Jakob Narel
- Badass Family: Hails from one despite being a pacifist himself
- Becoming the Mask: Both subverted and played straight. He knows who he is, but his loyalties change
- Blue Blood: Though the Alliance appears to be a republic, his family is powerful enough that Julian is occasionally referred to as a prince
- Cold-Blooded Torture: Survives nearly a year of brutal treatment at the hands of the Silverfish's crew
- Hates Being Touched: Though he has to hide this trait so as not to arouse suspicion
- Thou Shalt Not Kill: While he understands that violence is necessary, he strongly feels it should be an absolute last resort and prefers nonlethal options whenever they are available.
Kyle Oleson / Kyle Narel
- The Brute: Kyle isn't smart, but he is a strong and very capable soldier
- Crazy Jealous Guy: Really doesn't like it when anyone gets too close to Julian
- Pet the Dog : Bordering on Bait the Dog. He shows Julian a lot of loving gestures, but he also joined in the torture and is quick to beat Julian if Julian doesn't do what he wants.
- Token Evil Teammate: Kyle thinks of himself as a nice person. He is not.
- Yandere: Kyle is both protective and jealous of Julian.
Leon Vendral
- Authority Equals Asskicking: He will go boots on the ground and lead from the front
- Big Brother Instinct: Was perfectly willing to go to war to protect his little brother
- The Captain: And it's fairly clear he did not get the job due to nepotism
Josef Mateo
- A Father to His Men: Protective of his crew and his crew returns the sentiment
- The Captain: Captain of the Onager
- The Leader: As the captain of the only ship outside the blockade, he's kind of on his own but rises to the occasion
- Officer and a Gentleman: Is polite, even when technically kidnapping Julian, and goes out of his way to be hospitable to Rachel.
Luke Anson
- The Lancer: Both to Captain Mateo and to Julian himself, though technically Anson outranks Julian.
- Nice Guy: Goes out of his way to befriend Julian, recognize that Julian is a bit of a Fish out of Water on a warship
Okoro Jerin
- Deep Cover Agent: Was one shortly before ending up on the Onager with the results of the mission
