* VanHelsingHateCrimes: One of the major points of subtext in the game (particularly so if you've read the other gamelines) is that hunters tend to take out a lot of innocent supernaturals in the process of hunting the ones that threaten mortals. The problem is that, most of the time, they don't have a way to distinguish between the two types, both because they have limited knowledge of schisms and factions within supernatural species and because they aren't always able to tell different types of supernatural from one another. Once you've seen a werewolf eat your brother, how are you supposed to know he was one of the "bad" ones? That changeling is ultimately a victim of inhuman monsters who'd love nothing more than to live in peace and quiet -- but that's assuming that you, the hunter, even know that there's a difference between changelings, fetches, and True Fae. Then again, even the "good" ones aren't exactly FriendlyNeighborhoodVampires either. Many of these groups have little regard for human life and will gladly abuse or kill them to further their goals. In the perspective of the Hunters, they seem equally as monstrous. There is also the reasoning that "even the best of them cover for the worst of them."

And yet again, on the gripping hand, some Hunters are more than happy to kill even the actually good supernaturals -- for instance, Witch Finders mentions a Hunter group filming and distributing a recording of themselves burning a mage alive for the crime of using magic to heal terminally ill children.

* TheSecretOfLongPorkPies: One of the sample cults is a CannibalClan hidden behind the front of a celebrity chef's gourmet restaurant. The pâté is apparently to die for... and made at a farm on the city's outskirts, where children are force-fed like geese to produce a rich and fatty liver.

* PlasmaCannon: The Mjolnir Cannon, one of the highest-grade armaments available to Task Force: VALKYRIE, fires a high-intensity laser beam that ionizes the air along its course into highly conductive plasma and then sends a strong electric current down this channel. It comes in both assault rifle and car-mounted versions; it's difficult to get access to one, as the latter version especially is only given to exceptional agents and not permitted in urban areas, but it can reliably put down all but the toughest horrors of the night through sheer brute damage.

* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: Quite possible, since hunters are mortals, and the state of mortality is... easily changed. Depending on the supernatural creature a hunter becomes though, he may not mind, especially if his cell was already a cancer cell (which, in the VanHelsingHateCrimes terminology of Hunter, means a cell with a supernatural being having unofficial membership or at least a close friendship). Not a focus, but there's an Elixir in Night Stalkers that causes the Ascending One imbibing it to turn into a vampire (presumably a Mekhet, since they hail from AncientEgypt too) for a night. A dramatic failure causes the Elixir to work as intended... except for the "wears off" bit.

Infighting between different Hunter cells, compacts and conspiracies is often one of the major factors hobbling their attempts at dealing with the supernatural. Their overall goals often clash -- some groups want to destroy monsters, others to study them, other still to redeem them. The various groups highly specific ideologies also tend to cause problems when they clash -- religiously-minded groups like the Long Night (hardline American Protestants) and the Malleus Maleficarum (hardline Catholics) tend to butt heads with each other and with secular and occultist groups, profit-minded entities like the Cheiron Group don't mix well with more philanthropic groups, Network Zero and Null Mysteriis are embroiled in a harsh disagreement over whether information should be spread or hidden, and nobody likes Ashwood Abbey. However, occasional Hunters are able to put their differences aside in order to focus on protecting humanity.

It looked like the article was talking about a bad ass transplant

* BadAssTransplant: The Cheiron Group's speciality. What do you want? Demonic eyes that can see into the very depths of a man's soul? Trivial. A personal defence swarm of angry magical insects embedded into your arm? Child's play. A rotten human hand that can shoot fire, and hypnotize those that look at it? Why the hell not?

** The Maleficarum is sponsored by the Vatican, led by a ghoul, condones torture, and listens in on confessions. Though said ghoul truly does want to protect humanity from monsters, and latter installments reveal that the Vatican itself, especially the most recent Popes, disapproves of their more violent faction (as does said ghoul), to the point that Pope Benedict cut their budget as he viewed them as causing more harm than good, and Pope Francis has been pressuring them to focus on non-violent methods, especially ones that help the poor and fight corruption caused by demons and vampires messing in politics.

Five Man Band is The Team with exactly five members playing five specific roles.

* FiveManBand: The various Undertakings of slashers fall into this scheme. Which is not at all suprising, given that White Wolf admits to drawing their inspiration from horror movies. To wit:
** BigBad: Geniuses/Maniacs (TheChessmaster)
** TheDragon: Freaks/Mutants (RedRightHand / TheGrotesque, it depends on the Freak/Mutant in question.)
** TheBrute: Brutes/Masks (TheJuggernaut)
** EvilGenius: Charmers/Psychos (ManipulativeBastard)
** DarkChick: Avengers/Legends (JerkassWoobie)
** Depending on the Slashers in question, the BigBad and EvilGenius roles could really vary between Geniuses/Maniacs and Charmers/Psychos. Similarly, TheBrute and TheDragon positions could be exchanged, depending entirely on how the BigBad uses them.

Hunter: The Vigil is a role-playing game by White Wolf Publishing. It's the sixth game for the TabletopGame/NewWorldOfDarkness, following the normal humans who decide to go out and shoot the monsters hiding in the shadows. Of course, this being the World of Darkness, bad things happen a lot.

** As with most of the TabletopGame/NewWorldOfDarkness, the various templates are entirely compatible, and GreyAndGrayMorality tends to apply to all playable factions, resulting in hunter/supernatural alliances quite frequently.

* InterserviceRivalry: The two federal Hunter agencies, Task Force: VALKYRIE and VASCU, are subject to this. VASCU is vaguely aware of all the supernatural denizens of the WOD, but they only have clearance for Slashers, so whenever they stumble on something bigger (non-slasher mages, vampires, etc.), TFV comes in and takes over the case, much to their frustration.

** Part of the whole point of the game is cramming in as many Shout Outs to the other games in TabletopGame/NewWorldOfDarkness without explicitly referencing them or requiring a Storyteller or players to look into those other lines. Owls, as mentioned under BodySurf, are pretty much a shout out to the Strix, for example.

* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism: Cynical, as is usual with WoD. However, the Hunter line is the only part of the World Of Darkness where humanity can fight back against the monsters running things, making it slightly less cynical than the rest of the World Of Darkness. Of course, to put this into perspective, the least cynical part of [=WoD=] pits humans with shotguns and occasional magical items or tricks, against the immortal undead, witches who can alter the very fabric of reality, and monsters which could rip apart dozens of armed men with their bare claws.
