* AmnesiaEpisode: Track 4 of [[AudioAdaptation Drama CD 1]] is about Arle having an unfortunate run-in with a fairy which results in her being inflicted with a curse that causes her ability to form and recall memories to be slowly drained away from her.

* TheChewToy: Their ''entire existence'' is to be wiped out by the hundreds. Even in cutscenes, they aren't safe from abuse.

* ShoutOut: In addition to the above trope, her heavy damage phrase ("''Otegami choudai!''", roughly "Fan letters, please!") references the {{Terrible Trio}}s from the ''Anime/TimeBokan'' series. (Since tthis obviously wouldn't carry over too well to a western audience, this was changed to "Why me!?" in English.

* ShoutOut: In addition to the above trope, her heavy damage phrase ("''Otegami choudai!''", roughly "Fan letters, please!") references the {{Terrible Trio}}s from the ''Anime/TimeBokan'' series.

* GagBoobs: In Compile-era manga, Puyos are sometimes associated with breasts for comedy, either from characters stuffing their chest with Puyos or large breasts being used as an analogy for Puyos.

* BareYourMidriff: Downplayed in ''7'', but her design in that game features it. Much more the case with her swimsuit in ''Sun''.

* BareYourMidriff: A couple of outfits she's worn over the course of the series have had her show off her own. The most notable examples would be in ''Yo~n'' (as seen [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/1/10/Character_Rulue_PuyoPuyon_3.jpg here]]) and ''Puyo Puyo DA!'' (as seen [[https://66.media.tumblr.com/1b16e74c7e2023632fde769051078522/tumblr_pbhmrhCTPb1tu022ro1_1280.png here]]). Downplayed in ''15th Anniversary'' and ''Puyo Puyo 7'', where it does peek out of her top, but only a little.

* TwoFirstNames: Arle is French, Nadja is German.

* SignatureScene: He is [[spoiler:[[UnexplainedRecovery decapitated]] in the PC-98 version of ''Madou Monogatari II'' and his severed head continues to fight Arle.]] This is still a well known scene in the fandom nearly 30 years later.

* DoggedNiceGuy: While he does have his nice moments and is obviously kinder to Arle, he tries ''too'' hard to impress her so he can get his much-desired honeymoon with her. Unsurprisingly, none of his attempts really succeed. Among those attempts, he made a ticket to a Hot Spring for her, which he made into runes, then broke it apart for her to find, only for her to throw it out. [[spoiler:Alternatively, Arle cooks with it. A bonus ending in ''Minna'' reveals those "runes" are actually just curry blocks made unscented through magic.]]

* DoggedNiceGuy: Of course, he tries ''too'' hard to get Arle's attention. He made tickets to a Hot Spring for her (which he tore up, and made into runes for her to find, only for her to throw it out), and has tried to impress her on multiple occasions, none of which really succeeded.

** In ''Tetris 2'''s Chapter 6, [[ThatCameOutWrong he mangles one of his lines]] and accidentally claims that muscular bodies satisfy him. Even when he tries to correct himself, no one buys it.

* SecretKeeper: In ''15th'', Schezo is told by Ms. Accord that people will stop calling him a pervert if he fixes his vocab problems. 14 years later in ''Tetris 2'', he finally reveals this to Arle... [[spoiler:only to screw up again.]]

* ThemeNaming: [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Disaster, Juggernaut, Catastrophe, Cataclysm]], and Ascension. ''Sun'' also had Punish, Darkness, and Tempest.

* OffModel: In ''Tetris 2'', he does not have gloves in his character artwork, while he does have his fingerless gloves in his in-game sprites.

* SlapstickKnowsNoGender: Engages in ButtMonkey humour as much as the others. Some examples include getting beaned by a giant Puyo on the head in ''Puyo 1'', taking a kick to the face by Sukiyapodes in ''Tsu'', or being literally mopped the floor with by Kikimora in ''SUN''.

** In ''Tetris 2'', he claims that he has started working on fixing [[ThatCameOutWrong his legendarily botched vocabulary]]. Compared to... well, nearly ''every'' game prior, where he was pretty much an innuendo-spouting machine (especially in the first ''Tetris'' game's English dub). In ''Tetris 2'', Schezo falls way less often into his accidental {{Double Entendre}}s, most of the time saying what he really meant to say, and in the few occasions he says something wrong, he corrects himself without anyone needing to tell him what the mistake was (although there are some occasions that someone still needs to point out that he said something wrong).

* Secret-Keeper: In ''15th'', Schezo is told by Ms. Accord that people will stop calling him a pervert if he fixes his vocab problems. 14 years later in ''Tetris 2'', he finally reveals this to Arle... [[spoiler:only to screw up again.]]

* DivergentCharacterEvolution: Each colored Puyo was originally a simple PaletteSwap of each other, but as time went on, they would gain different shapes and expressions to differentiate themselves. Justified from a gameplay standpoint, since these changes help make them easier to identify for colorblind players, and for those playing on devices which aren't in color (such as the [=GameBoy=], or a Switch with the greyscale setting on).

* NoPronunciationGuide: She's apparently named after a play called ''L'Arlésienne'' (''The Girl From [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arles Arles]]''), and thus her name should be pronounced "Ah-rll". However, she calls herself "Ah-rl-lee" in the English version of ''Puyo Pop Fever''. The English version of ''Puyo Puyo Tetris'' makes a small compromise in that while it is confirmed that "Ah-rll" is indeed correct, Dark Prince exclusively uses "Ah-rl-lee" as the pronunciation of his pet name for her, "Arly."

* [[OnlySaneMan Only Sane Girl]]: Up until Ringo appeared, Arle was the one that questioned the weird antics in the Compile games.

* [[{{Fanboy}} Fangirl]]: In ''Madou Monogatari: Hanamaru Dai Youchienji'', she runs a Dark Prince-fanclub. ''In his own house.'' Apparently the only members are other Dracos.

* [[CatGirl Cat Boy]]: As Nekomimi Schezo, via AnimalEaredHeadband and a faux tail.

** In an example that crosses over into NoPronunciationGuide, the English arcade game ''might'' have changed Areiado to "Areiad." It's tough to tell, between the not-so-great vocal quality and the...[[WhatTheHellIsThatAccent whatever]] accent that the voice actor attempted.

* [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep Everyone Calls Her Witch]]: According to ''20th's'' Trivia shop item, one factoid states that she'll get a name once she's finished training. Everyone and herself refers to her as "Witch" because she ''doesn't'' have a proper name to refer herself as.

* DeadpanSnarker: Big time, during Compile's run. After Sega's makeover, this element of her character was toned down substantially. Although there was this famous gem from the US version of ''Minna'':

* BonusBoss: He is one in ''Sun'' and ''Fever'', if you fulfill certain conditions.
** For ''Sun'': [[spoiler:Beat the Hard route without continuing.]]
** For ''Fever'': [[spoiler:Reach the final boss of the [=HaraHara=] course without continues and use Fever mode less than 4 or more than 12 times. Alternatively, he can be encountered if your continue count is at a multiple of 7. [[BaitAndSwitchBoss He will be fought in place of Popoi.]]]]

* WeaponOfChoice: His ★4 flavor text as well as the ''Puyo'' novels describe the dark sword as "his beloved partner."

* ShesGotLegs: There's been a couple of moments in the series that have put emphasis on her slim legs. Prominent examples include the opening cinematic to ''SUN'' as well as her ending cutscene in the same game, her Adult form in ''Puyo 7'', and ''Saturn Madou'', in which she wears black stockings.

* ShesGotLegs: There's been various moments in the series that have put a notable emphasis on her slim legs. Notable examples include the intro cutscene to her story in ''Madou Monogatari ARS'' and ''SUN'''s opening cinematic. She even admits to Lidelle in ''20th'' that she considers her slender legs her "pride and joy". As mentioned above, her attacks even had more of a focus on kicks starting with ''Yo~n''.

* {{Shopkeeper}}: Her current occupation. She sells magic potions, but because she's only interested in making extremely niche products, she's not seeing much profit.

** The whole reason she has Carbuncle is because she ''stole'' him from the Dark Prince, who [[PayEvilUntoEvil even begged her not to steal his beloved pet.]] May overlap with NecessaryWeasel, as without this jerkass behavior she'd never have acquired him.

* VagueAge: Just about the biggest wild card about him. Profiles list his age as "Unknown", and Schezo flat out doesn't even care to count how old he is anymore. He looks like he could be a full adult, but still possesses an actual adult form with his Mega transformation in ''7'' (said form is slightly taller, meaning he's still within growing age). Putting the Chronology into consideration, while he's technically 180, he, according to Oda, went into a deep slumber that halted his physical and mental aging at some point, so his actual age isn't actually 180. Taking that into account, there's a chance he might be biologically younger than Arle since he became a dark mage at 14 after obtaining the dark sword and inheriting Rune Lord's power, which were already shown influencing him by then. The [[ArtShift many different artstyles]] the series has seen over its run only add to the vagueness. ''Madou Monogatari''-related materials like ''2'', ''Saturn Madou'', and the ''Shin Madou Monogatari'' novels often give Schezo a distinctly mature appearance, comparable to Dark Prince, while the ''Puyo Puyo'' sub-series generally makes him look closer to Rulue's age range at most. Lastly, Schezo's voice further blurs the line, having a mature-sounding voice in the Madou games, a youthful voice in the Puyo games, and a comparably deeper-sounding voice in the English ''Puyo Tetris'' and ''Champions'' dub. He's referred to as "onii-san" in Japanese, which in this context means "young man", but that's still a rather broad window of age.
