Ask the Tropers:
openValues Resonance misuse?
The other day, I was looking at the YMMV page for Michael Jackson, and stumbled upon an entry for Values Resonance that I'm pretty sure doesn't fit the description:
"In the age of Cancel Culture, "Billie Jean" can be seen as this. ("For 40 days and 40 nights, law was on her side", "Be careful what you do, because a lie becomes the truth")" The entry was added by Risdio51 last September.
General dislike of the term "cancel culture" aside, I'm not sure what "Billie Jean" has to do with cancelling - if I remember correctly, the song's about a man dealing with a stalker and was inspired exactly by that. The "40 days and 40 nights" line seems more like the law siding with Billie than a group of people being against the singer.
Is the entry kosher or not?
openSuperfluous subpages for Trolls Image and Video sources.
Inky 100 created ImageSource.Trolls and VideoSource.Trolls, and neither have anywhere near enough examples to warrant subpages. I'm fairly certain that's not allowed.
Looking at their edit history, I don't think they're trolling (heh), just really passionate about the franchise. Like, the pages are formatted properly, but they're extremely unnecessary.
Edited by MurlocAggroBopenFinola or Fin? Live Action TV
On Series.Debris, Finola Jones is referred to by her first name and Fin. Which one should be used for overall consistency?
(I personally vote for her first name since she's never been referred to as "Fin" on-screen)
openEntries for unreleased videos. Web Original
There are some tropers that keep adding folder entries for Todd in the Shadows Funny pages that are only released to Patreon and not to the public. The latest one is from the Trainwrecords. I removed it the first time but it got added again.
It's been a problem for every release. There's already been a request not to do this, and I already asked in the Todd in the Shadows' forum.
openTroping non-sentient weapons and listing them as characters
Two questions: 1. Do we list non-sentient weapons as characters? I have no qualms with troping those or even creating subsections on character pages to group related tropes together, however I feel that adding weapons to character lists is a bit too much.
Check the notes on the Marvel Cinematic Universe page to see what I'm talking about.
2. Do we apply certain tropes to non-sentient weapons? Can Tony Stark's armor or Thor's hammer be an Adaptational Badass, Back from the Dead, Composite Character? I understand that Tropes Are Flexible, but are they that flexible?
openLogging in
Why do we have to log in to see TLPS, the launched and discarded section of them, and users' edit history, among other things?
openNo Title
sorry for potentially sensitive topic-
I used to browse tvtropes around quite a while ago, forgot about it, recently came back and made an account. obviously several things different. I was trying to find the trope previously known as "Rape Is Love"- the page indicates it was renamed but not what it was renamed to. anyone know that?
thanks
Edited by Tremmor19open Potential ban evader?
So, not too long ago, JadethePegasus edited the Monsters, Inc. page to remove contractions and change the Big Bad entry according to the history and it seemed familiar.
I looked through their edits, as well as the banned editor AnthonyA's edit history and judging by their editing patterns, we might have a potential ban-evader, but can someone look into this? Thanks.
Edited by gjjonesopenFanservice tropes for minors
Do we allow fanservice tropes (Fanservice, Ms. Fanservice, Femme Fatale, etc) to be listed on the pages of child characters? I've seen some entries which are a little too... detailed - considering the character in question is a minor. Do we clean up the examples or remove them entirely?
- editing to make it clearer: when I say 'minors' I mean pre-pubescent.
open Possible Misuse
I noticed the following paragraph added onto the Fan Works folder on Creator's Pet:
- In the Fallout: New Vegas mod The Frontier, the team member responsible for the NCR storyline reportedly threatened to pull the entire campaign and his other (substantial) work on the project if anyone changed anything in "his" campaign without asking for permission, forcing the rest of the team to rebuild essential parts of the game.
openTroper with ZCE and related issues
Cindylover 1969 has added a couple examples of ZCE entries, one of which isn't even a trope. Examples here and here.
I sent them a PM earlier today, but they haven't responded yet. Advice requested.
openPage won't save?
I'm trying to create a page for Recap.Miraculous Ladybug SP 02 Miraculous World Shanghai The Legend Of Lady Dragon, but it won't save any changes? I'm suspecting this has to do with the title being too long since I believe I've dealt with this issue before and resolved it by putting it under a shorter title, but I thought I would bring it up here before going through with it in case the issue is something else.
If I'm correct, then I would have to change the name of the trope page for the other special as well.
Edited by CommanderVisoropenGuess I cause Edit War... Videogame
In my defense, my first edit on this entry was in 2019 and I only remember afterward that I did remove similar part before (this). So please hear me out.
Anyway, I just removed this bit.
- The Fate Series epitomized the Gender Flip of Historical/Public Doman Characters. However, Fate/stay night (the Trope Codifier that started the trend) only had one character subject to the Gender Flip treatment (Saber aka King Arthur). It also the explores the issues surrounding a female assuming the role of King Arthur in her origin lore, including her demise. Additionally, Arthur is more of a mythological figure than an historical one anyway, and the stories about him have diverged widely over time. As such, stay night was just doing another take on the source material.
The reason is that while Fate is possibly the most famous example of Historical Gender Flip, it isn't Unbuilt Trope. Fate was first released in 2004, by that time there're already many Historical Gender Flip before Saber. One example is Saiyuki: Journey West (released in Japan in 1999, 2001 in the west) which allow player to pick Sanzo/Xuanzang's gender. Another is Uesugi Kenshin (we even noted it in their article), which appears as female in Ken Ishikawa's 1988 Makyuhakenden manga (Japanese Wikipedia article here). And I'm pretty certain that there're more examples.
In short, Saber counted as Early-Installment Weirdness and Deconstruction of the trope, but not unbuilt one.
Edited by Kuruniopen'In order'
Is it kosher for a troper to compulsively remove all instances of 'in order to' and replace them with 'to' on a page?
openPage Blanking
Cryptoverse2021 blanked Cryptoverse, which they also created. The edit reason says "Remove page please".

openPersonas: Guardian Entity vs Fighting Spirit
While I've been on this site, I've seen Guardian Entity used as the usual trope to describe a Persona, which is described as a person's strength of heart made manifest. I used to do this too until I found Fighting Spirit, which fits better. Is there a reason I shouldn't change links I find to the latter?
Edited by BobtheBoldoreopenHeading for character index
I see on some character indexes (such as this one) that WMG headings are used. Is this okay or is it more appropriate to use a different header?
openWhat media folder on trope page for Franchise-wide examples?
Trying to figure out where to put this one:
Faint in Shock: In nearly every version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, April O'Neil faints the first time she sees the turtles. They usually pick her up and take her home.
Is this too general? If not, is it okay to have a Franchise/ media folder?
(I've not been able to find the administrivia page that is supposed to document this)

Fanfic.Aftermath Of The Games
I'm not sure if it's this trope as they are not confirmed as blood sibling in the original work. (Word of God on the matter tends to be dicey. Grandpa Gruff from the same work was later to not actually be related to anyone so there's that president.) Thoughts?
