Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Yeah, that's another thing I wondered. I wouldn't really find their friendship redeeming (there aren't friendly/dog-petting moments between them- its more like the two work as a pair and are both nasty pieces of work).

One of them has a kind of (but not really) Even Evil Has Standards moment- he corners the protagonist in a bathroom and is going to kill him for fun, but tells Gordianus he will let him finish peeing as even he wouldn't kill someone in such an undignified state.

I should mention the pair try to kill Gordianus multiple times throught the novel, and at one point break into and trash his house. They also come close to raping his mistress, but after she fights back and her pet cat bites one of them, they nail the cat to the wall instead.

So yeah, they might surpass Roscius (or else they should be listed as well).

I've read those books a long while ago. Roscius is a yea. All of his 'redeeming' qualities are kind of a build up before the carpet's swept from under the reader as they all have pretty clear "Haha, nope, not really!" explanations.

He's pretty much the worst guy in the book, especially by Roman standards with patricide being a hideous crime to them.

I suggest Klorgbane from Regular Show. Before he became a doomsday villain, he was a bully that took advantage of Skips' pacifism after he started dating Mona. When Skips was late for the fight, he was fully willing to destroy the school and kill anyone who got in his way just to fight him, including Mona.

Alright, I believe the YMMVs are now up to date. I also copied Red Skull's updated film entry to his YMMV. Any update on Kore?

[up][up] Slaughtering a school sounds absolutely awful, but the Lich was planning to destroy the multiverse so I am conflicted.

With Deacon Frost far in the plus and Damaskinos and Drake voted down, here's a new write-up for him.

  • The vampire leader Deacon Frost, the Big Bad from the first Blade movie, is the worst villain in a setting filled with sadistic predators who kill humans as much for fun as for sustenance. Unlike the older vampire hierarchy who prefer to remain in the shadows and rule humanity behind the scenes to protect their interests, he wants to openly reduce all humans to cattle despite originally having been one himself instead of a vampire pureblood. He murders a vampire elder in an exceptionally painful way by removing his teeth and letting him burn up in the sunrise, and kills all the other council members to complete a ritual sacrifice so he can rule supreme as a Physical God. He murders his human minions whenever he likes, attacks Blade's mentor Whistler and then leaves him to die slowly, tries to feed a woman to a ghoul-type zombie, and tries to kill a little girl in front of Blade by first threatening to slit her throat and then throwing her in front of city traffic to make his escape. His worst crime isn't revealed until the end of the film, when Blade discovers that Frost was the vampire who attacked his pregnant human mother and turned Blade into a Dhampyr to begin with. Frost fully intended the unborn child to die and since then has kept Blade's mother as his private consort and facilitated her corruption into a merciless monster.

Wow, Klorgbane sounds pretty awful. No other villain in Regular Show ever tried to do that. However, I have to wonder, was the Halloween Wizard not real at the end of the episode he appeared, or was he? Essentially what I mean is he brutally killed almost every member of the park's staff, most of which happened onscreen. And the reason for him slaughtering them? Because Rigby egged his house.

@24283: I kinda prefer Palpatine's entry how it is now.

@24292: Voting no on Klorgbane. He showed no inclination he planned on killing anyone other than Skips, killing Mona was an accident on his part. Trying to kill the hero is fairly standard villainy.

@24296: Frost's entry looks good.

[up]x4: Both, I guess. His work requires extensive skill in both surgery and engineering, and he developed the process with which to create his cyborgs himself from grandpa's notes. I went with Doctor in the entry mainly because he has clear parallels to Mengele.

Kore:

Kore is a dwarf Paladin who indiscriminately slaughters any members of "monster" races which he views as Always Chaotic Evil, even though only demons and undead can be considered such. He doesn't even spare defenseless elders and those begging for mercy. When he is confronted with a small child from his own race who was raised by an orc to be a decent person who wouldn't be afflicted by the Fantastic Racism endemic to the setting, he butchers the kid like any of the other humanoids he just massacred, stating that the boy was hopelessly tainted; this even though said foster father with his dying breath begs Kore to spare the boy. When Chief attempts a You Shall Not Pass! on Kore so the rest of the goblin party can escape, Kore takes down Chief, heals him so he doesn't die, and then submits him to Cold-Blooded Torture so his screams of pain will lure back the rest of the group; he hypocritically uses his prey's basic moral decency against them yet still considers them irredeemable Always Chaotic Evil scum. When Minmax and Forgath show up, he attacks them too despite the fact they were also fighting the Goblin Adventure Party. He has had zero Freudian Excuse revealed and there is a serious Fridge Horror of realizing that either he never used his Detect Evil, or ignores it when it reveals that his prey aren't all. This dovetails with his twisted world view that anyone associating with what he considers evil monsters are tainted and worthy of nothing but pitiless extermination, no rehabilitation possible.

Out of curiosity, was Yuriev from Xenosaga cut due to his crimes not being sufficiently heinous or due to his Freudian Excuse?

General consensus on the Shadow Queen seemed to be for a cut. I only recall two people arguing for keeping her and I think one of them changed hir mind.

Let's cut Stranglehold for now. Gleeman Vox I think is a keep. However, as for Sleeping Dogs...we're waiting on Exister

[up]I cut Stranglehold (and sent a PM) (though I think he could be a potential candidate); Vox stays; Shadow Queen stays until I get a definitive answer; Sleeping Dogs I'll just keep the YMMV as is for now.
