Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I'll give a [tup] for Jackal. Shin I'm on the fence about, but he doesn't seem heinous enough to be a CM.

So where are we at regarding Navi Araz? Should we cut him?

I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.

I will say [tup] to the Jackal, Kazuma and Mr. Abney and [tdown] to Alex and Shin.

Sometimes I wonder if for certain characters being a monster has become so iconic for them, that other writers writing these characters in other adaptions almost always write them this way. The likes of Joker, Red Skull and Brainiac often seem to be written as monsters in other media adaptions. Palpatine when appearing outside the movies is never given sympathetic traits and given new crimes to add to his rap sheet. Ramsay Snow's appearance in the telltale games version of GOT has added new crimes to his rap sheet. If Bullseye appears in the Daredevil show, it seems likely he will be monster.

This can apply to other characters and other tropes, being an Anti-Villain is an iconic part of Magneto's character, so much so that he given this trait in cartoons and movies. Its so iconic, that I don't care for the monstrous Ultimate Magneto, he seems like a far weaker character to me then his more noble counterparts.

Now this is not always the case, Ultron is a complete monster in the comics, but not in any of the media adaptions. Malekith is a GVD in the movies, Darkseid is often a GDV some adaptions. So some characters are not as iconic monsters as others are.

Here is my writeup for the Bone Collector:

The Bone Collector: The Bone Collector, is a cunning yet cold blooded psychopath who captures innocent victims in a taxi while masquerading as a taxi driver, surgically and painfully removes a bone to be used as clues, and challenges the paraplegic detective Lincon Rhyme, and a cop named Amelia Donaghy, to save them within a certain period of time. If they don't make it, the victims will die a horrifically cruel and gruesome death. The killer does this in order to torture Lincoln Rhyme out of revenge, and to ensure that he succeeds, most of his victims never had a real chance to be saved. He captures a couple, shot and buried the husband, and tied up his wife in front of an open steam pipe, which is set to go off at a certain time. The woman couldn't be saved, since the killer sawed off the handle of a steam valve, so that the police can't turn off the steam. As a result, the victim dies by being burned alive by an enormous quantity of steam blasted at her. A college graduate was also captured by the killer, who ties him up, and cuts him open to be eaten alive by rats. The killer left no deadline this time in his clues, implying that the graduate had no chance to be rescued at all. Outside of his challenge, the killer has claimed another victim: the original taxi driver, with his bone removed. It is also revealed that during Lincon Rhyme's 2 year coma, the killer already murdered numerous victims. The Bone Collector then kills a traffic officer who tried to pull him over, while escaping with two victims, an elderly grandfather, and his young granddaughter, and ties them to a pier so that they will drown, showing that the killer is willing to murder children too. When Donaghy frees the two victims, the grandfather is already dead, but the poor girl barely survives. After luring Donaghy away, the killer then targets Rhyme, stabbing Thelma in the gut and killing her, along with Captain Cheney. He then confronts Rhyme, while cutting off all communication. He reveals himself to be a former forensics cop called Marcus Andrews, who goes by the identity of Richard Thompson, Rhyme's technician. It is revealed that the killer framed six people by doctoring reports and tampering with evidence, and one of them hung himself as a result. The killer believes they were guilty and scum, but even worse is that he believes his work was impeccable, displaying no empathy at all for these victims, and as a result of Rhyme's expert opinion, ended up in prison, and was abused for six years. However, any possible sympathy for this bastard is lost when he gleefully and remorselessly taunts Rhyme that he and his helper failed and couldn't save those victims, and that their blood was on his hands. The killer then proceeds to give Rhyme a fate worse than death; by paralyzing him permanently and completely so that Rhyme becomes a living vegetable, which is Rhyme's worst fear that the killer knows about, and mocks his fate, saying “what kind of vegetable would you like to be? A carrot? How about a zucchini?” When he is unable to do that, he When he failed to do that, he threatens to cut out his tongue, remove his eye, but ultimately settles to gut him open right down the middle, as Rhyme watches. Despite the Freudian Excuse, it was self-inflicted, and in the end, the Bone Collector is a truly remorseless bastard.

Note: For this writeup, the killer has quite a large onscreen bodycount, each with different details that illustrates how evil the killer is, a weak Freudian Excuse that is thrown out when he gloats about his atrocities, and tries to cripple and torture Lincoln Rhyme, so it might be difficult to shorten, at least for me.

[tup] to Jackal, and [tdown] to Shin. It's obvious who the greater of the two evils is here.

  • 40159: Thanks. Took care of those.
  • 40160: Not sure, but probably one is needed.
  • 40163: I don't know. Though if Navi goes, Marwan probably needs to be added.
  • 40165 on: Yes, too long (thanks for writing one). Kyle, probably [lol]. Scraggle, sure, but it needs to be MASSIVELY trimmed.

Well, this is as short as I can make the writeup, since the Bone Collector does have an explainable yet inexcusable Freudian Excuse , and actions beyond just dissecting, shooting, and horrifically murdering people in different ways, while giving false hope. A massive bodycount is heavily implied, based on numerous photos of past victims with their surgery marks, such as his utter lack of empathy towards his victims, even the framed victims, and sheer sadism towards his hated target, and those are his defining traits.

SPOILER ALERT FROM GAME OF THRONES

What about The Night's King from Game of Thrones. He's literally devoted his existence to destroying all life, gloats over Wildling corpses to Jon before converting them to his army, and turns infants into White Walkers. The Made of Evil excuse doesn't work for him because he was even a tyrant (implied complete monster off screen) while he was human and willingly went out of his way to become King of the White Walkers. He is shown as basically having full mental faculties and is capable of showing human emotion but chooses to embody pride and cruelty. Everyone is scared and disgusted by him.

I'm nowhere near caught up on the show or books and have only the faintest idea who you're talking about, but I feel pretty confident in saying that unless they're dead then their arc isn't complete enough to discuss them.

That's what I would havev thought too but some other characters from the show, such as Ramsay Snow, are considered a complete monster despite not being dead yet. Likewise I don't see any way the Night's King could redeemed in any way.

It's a shame Complete Monsters cannot have a Heel–Face Turn because lord knows I'd suggest Dusknoir from Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Explorers. He does all of Darkrai's dirty work, tries to bloodily execute the main characters (bloodless carnage is in effect, but it it wasn't...), plans to completely wipe out the present day so that the Bad future lasts forever and that he can live forever, as well as stealing the souls of his victims and using Grovyle's body in his plan to comoletely annihilate the present. But since he had a HFT in bonus content, I don't think he can count. Although if we treat the bonus episode and the main story (the bonus content is only in one game) as separate, he could count.

That's of course assuming we want to assume his HFT was genuine and he wasn't eventually planning to backstab everyone.

Recently I said Navi Araz should be cut. Now that I finished to see the 4 season of 24 I changed my mind. He's definetly a CM. His worried look on his face when he's ordered his son's death I guess was just an act to avoid his wife's suspicion. I also think both him and Marwan should be conidered CM. Marwan after Abu Fayed has the most succeful bodycounts of innocent people. The meltdown of the nuclear reactor it's possible it caused more or less 50,000 deaths. He smiles when he sees a baby but I don't thik it's a Pet the Dog moment. It looks like more an ironic "Oh, how cute". He gives a speech to justify his actios but I see it just as propaganda. The scene with his family was cut so it doesn't count as a redeeming trait.

About Ramon Salazar I'm still unsure for "the decent buryal" thing
