Macron's OP

Giving thanks to Yindee and other tropers for helping me finish the wick check.

Well, you know what time it is. Another x as weapon being taken to the TRS for re-evaluation. Between Weapon Specialization, Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon, and Weapon-Based Characterization, most hammer usages with meaning have been covered. The description mentions the trend of small girls using big hammers and maybe there's general trope for small girls (or people if it's more of a gender neutral thing) using big weapons as evidenced by Small Girl, Big Gun. Ultimately, not something that has strong support in wick check but sounds like something yardable to me

Conclusion

Disambig between Weapon Specialization, Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon, and Weapon-Based Characterization and other weapon tropes.

Wick Check

68/68
    open/close all folders
Character uses a hammer (often as a weapon) (36/68)
  1. Attack! Attack! Attack!: Lyrical Nanoha: The Iron Hammer Knight, Vita. There's nothing she can't destroy. Hammer as weapon.
  2. Dual Wielding: In his self-titled video game, Deadpool dual-wields katanas, sai, and even ''sledgehammers''.
  3. Fire and Brimstone Hell: Sonic Adventure: Red Mountain is like this, complete with ghostly prisoners and giant stone skulls that shoot fire, with some very large metal hammers and random religious symbols thrown in for good measure. Although it seems to represent the Lava Reef Zone volcano from Sonic And Knuckles, it doesn't look much like it. Large hammers exist.
  4. Ninja Maid: Hazuki Sakurazaka of Haruka Nogizaka's Secret, who is capable of roofhopping and knocking men out, and if that's not enough, she still has her chainsaw on her repertoire. Her fellow maid Nanami Nanashiro seems to be this way as well, as she is also pretty handy with her hammer.
  5. Tremor Trampoline: Painkiller has the Guardian. If the player fails to jump when the boss slams the ground, he will take damage and be catapulted into the air, and then take more damage from the resulting fall damage.
  6. Anime.Kyousogiga: Koto's weapon. Commented out, but counts.
  7. BadassPreacher.Real Life: The Archbishop of York, William de la Zouche, raised a company of archers against the Scots at the Curb-Stomp Battle of Neville's Cross, and his quick levying on his own initiative is credited with preventing a Scottish invasion of England and capturing the Scottish King David II Bruce. Another historical tradition says that he was present at the Battle of Crecy the previous year, and led some of the King's foot. On both occasions he took to the field wearing black plate armour and carrying an enormous mace, because he couldn't carry a sword as he was forbidden "edged weapons." A mace, but same usage.
  8. Characters.Bloodborne Enemies And Bosses: The Ihyll prospector wields a Kirkhammer.
  9. Characters.Code Prime Cybertron: Used a forge when she was alive that could create powerful weapons and artifacts, the Star Saber being one of said weapons. Hammer is used to forge weapons.
  10. Characters.Digimon Ghost Game Supporting Cast: Carries one with him at all times, using it to steal his target's time with his "Chrono Breaker" attack. Character carries and uses hammer.
  11. Characters.Hotline Miami:
    • In the tutorial, his first weapon is a hammer that he uses against the two remaining thugs before going upstairs. It's also his main weapon in the digital comic and he uses it to bludgeon the Casey family to death. As weapon
    • Averted. Despite his name and his trailer showing him holding a hammer as a weapon, he can't do that in-game. Doesn't use hammer as weapon. Aversions not allowed.
  12. Characters.Kingdom Hearts Sora: Morph Weapon: Favorite Deputy transforms first into Hyper Hammer, a weapon focused on wide sweeping attacks, then again into Drill Punch, a single target-oriented Power Fist. Classic Tone transforms into an identical set of weapons called Boom Hammer and Clock Drill.
  13. Characters.Terraria: Which they throw at you to attack. They will sometimes drop from dead Paladins, and allow you to do the same thing. Hammer as thrown weapon.
  14. Characters. The Rising Of The Shield Hero Main Characters: (Raphtalia) In the Web Novel, she becomes the [[spoiler:Seven Star Hero of the Hammer]] after Naofumi removes Tact's grip on [[spoiler:his stolen Weapons]]. Hammer as weapon.
  15. Fanfic.Burning Bridges Building Confidence: Revengance swings a giant hammer around.
  16. Film.Bad Black: Swaaz brings out a hammer to break the bank teller's window and steal the money.
VJ Emmie: "I have a key! Ugandan key!"
  17. Film.Intruder: When Bill finds Craig spying on Jennifer outside, he attacks him with a hammer.
  18. Film.Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome: A giant hammer is one of the weapons provided in Thunderdome. Max uses it to knock Blaster's helmet off.
  19. Film.Unhinged 2020: The film starts with the Man brutally dispatching his ex-wife and her new husband with one, right before he lights the house on fire. Hammer as weapon.
  20. Film.Violent Night: Character uses hammer.
    • Dirty Coward: The reindeer get spooked and fly off after one of the mercs shoots the roof, abandoning Santa in the process. [[spoiler:This ends up getting Subverted at the end of the film, where they return after the battle with not only Santa's spare sack but Skullcrusher as well, indicating that they didn't leave him for dead as he thought, they just arrived too late for their Big Damn Heroes moment.]]
    • Drop The Hammer: Before Santa became his current form, he was [[spoiler:a Viking warrior who used a large war-hammer known as Skullcrusher. At one point, he claims a workman's hammer from a barn to use as a weapon.]]
  21. Film.Wendigo: Otis murders The Sheriff by smashing his head in with a claw hammer.
  22. Hitman.Tropes D To L: An ordinary household hammer is one of the many weapons that 47 can use to execute his targets (or anyone else for that matter). Made all the more gruesome by a special head-crunching animation when 47 successfully pulls off a sneak attack on his victim.
  23. ImprobableWeaponUser.Video Games: Character uses hammer.
    • City of Heroes: Since they introduced alternate weapon skins, there's been a few of these available, mainly for the War Mace and Battle Axe powersets. War Mace gets a baseball bat, a shovel and a wrench, while Battle Axe gets the same shovel turned on its side. Your enemies aren't strangers to this either- see the Scrapyarders, why will sometimes use jackhammers against you.
    • Hammerin' Harry: Or Daiku no Gensan in Japan; either way, the titular character normally falls under Drop The Hammer... but in Hammerin' Hero, he gets alternate jobs which give him access to some improbable weapons. At the normal end is a baseball bat. Others include things like records, boomboxes, sushi, whole raw fish, anchors...
  24. Literature. Will Of Heaven: Zhang Liang supposedly tried to assassinate the First Emperor with a 120-catty hammer.
  25. Pantheon.Mammals: Portfolio: Wielding a hammer
  26. PlayingWith.Power Up Letdown: Exaggerated: After beating That One Boss, Alicia receives a spike-covered hammer. It breaks after only five uses, and doesn't dish out much damage either. Hammer as weapon.
  27. Podcast.Fallout Is Dragons: The chosen weapon of one Tempered Steel.
  28. Recap.Arrow S 4 E 14 Code Of Silence: Spartan finds himself fighting a Giant Mook from the Demolition Team armed with a sledgehammer. The second time his helmet emits a magnetic field that stops him being hit in the head. Uses sledgehammer.
  29. Recap.Total Drama The Obsta Kill Course: Mike uses a wooden mallet inside of his brain to free Svetlana, which gives the added bonus of sabotaging Mal. Mallet as a weapon.
  30. Series.Dark Hole: A zombie attacks Tae-han's car with a hammer.
  31. TabletopGame.Templars Of Kayne: Token Nonhuman: Drop The Hammer: Sedna and Arthur Commented out. Bizarrely, chars' fighting specializations are listed under TNH
  32. VideoGame.Dragon Quest Builders: In addition to breaking through earth and mining resources, your mallet can be used to give monsters a good whack on the head. Hammer used as mining tool and weapon.
  33. VideoGame.Medi Evil: Hammers exist.
  34. VideoGame.Mini Giantsio: The weapon of the Tank class. Commented out, but fits "hammer as weapon".
  35. VideoGame.Robot Alchemic Drive: Hidden Weapons: Gllang has a spread bomb launcher in his left hand and a hammer in his right. The spread bomb launcher does go out of control sometimes, but the hammer reliably buffs up Gllang's already ludicrous damage. Character uses hammer.
  36. WesternAnimation.Batman The Brave And The Bold: Death Montage: Poor Batman suffers through this in "Emperor Joker!". Throughout this montage he gets crushed by a giant hammer, dropped into the Acid Pool, incinerated to ashes by a flamethrower, Chained to a Railway and run over by a train, guillotined, Eaten Alive by a Threatening Shark, etc. And at each painful, comedic death he goes through, the Joker brings him back to life only to kill him again. It is not until the Dark Knight gets worn out from all the deaths he endured that the new Clown Emperor decides not to kill him again, as his repeated killings start getting rather boring.

    Covered by other tropes (20/68)
  1. Armed Females, Unarmed Males: Weapon Specialization.
    • Sonic the Hedgehog: Amy Rose is the only female hedgehog in the games and the only one who regularly uses a weapon, namely her Piko Piko hammer. The male hedgehogs Sonic, Shadow and Silver don't use weapons, save for a few games.
    • Sonic Boom: Team Sonic consists of three guys (Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) and two girls (Amy and Sticks). Amy uses her signature hammer, while Sticks uses a variety of weapons including a staff, a club and a boomerang. Among the boys, only Tails uses weapons.
  2. Awesome.Warhammer 40000: The crowning moment of awesome for Vulkan after being captured by Conrad Kurze, A.K.A psycho Batman, following the Drop Site Massacre. After being tortured both mentally and physically, killed numerous times and subjected to numerous taunts from his fallen brother, the Onyx Primarch uses Conrad as a bludgeon to beat the shit out of a force field guarding his personal hammer Dawnbringer. Weapon Specialization as the hammer is a character's personal weapon. It's also named to make it stand out.
  3. Characters.Aura Of The Azure: Her weapon is a grenade launcher that turns into a hammer. Mix-and-Match Weapon.
  4. Characters.Dan And Mabs Furry Adventures: Her primary weapon is a large mallet. Weapon Specialization
  5. Characters.Heavy Rain Player Characters: Grabs a forging hammer during her fight with Dr. Baker. Sounds like Improvised Weapon
  6. Characters.Kirby Recurring Bosses: His signature weapon is a huge hammer, which Kirby can get by inhaling him. Weapon Specialization perhaps
  7. Characters.Legend Of The Five Rings: Carry a Big Stick / Drop The Hammer: The signature weapon of the Crab Clan, primarily by way of Hida family bushi, is the testubo, a heavy two-handed iron club with either studs or spikes. This is because most smaller or less damaging weapons are practically useless against anything from the Shadowlands. Actual hammers aren't mentioned much in the lore, but are seen occasionally in official art of Crab warriors. Weapon Specialization
  8. Characters.Level Up Hero: Sam loves to use a hammer as an offensive weapon. Likely Weapon Specialization since he is seen holding a hammer in the book cover.
  9. Characters.Tactics Ogre Classes: Weapon Specialization: Drop The Hammer: Hammers provide them access to strong ice, fire, or lightning elemental finishers. Fire, Ice, Lightning.
  10. Characters.Trails Series Erebonia Thors Class VII Original: Her S-Craft Gigant Break transforms Airgetlam into an enormous hammer capable of shattering the ground with a blow. She later gets Sledge Impact which does the same thing in a lesser form. Morph Weapon.
  11. DarthWiki.Attack On Lololo 4: His weapon of choice. Weapon Specialization.
  12. GameOfThrones.Tropes P To S: Spiteful Spit: Karl Tanner spits in Jon Snow's face to throw him off during their duel. Learning from this, Jon spits blood in the face of Styr of the Thenns to gain enough time to grab an improvised weapon. Character uses hammer as Improvised Weapon. Placed here b.c. the Drop The Hammer pothole can be safely replaced.
  13. Manga.Ran And The Gray World: Zen's go-to attack is a hammer that increases at will and at larger sizes creates a shockwave when swung. Morph Weapon.
  14. NightmareFuel.Rune: The introduction of the Sarks in the entrance of Loki's Castle. Early into the level after fighting off some dwarves and zombies, players encounter a zombie immediately that dives into a pool of Loki's blood, only for it to jump back out as a towering pissed off monster that is out for Ragnar's blood. Unlike regular zombies, these monsters are also capable of jumping incredibly high, can wear heavy armor, and wield deadly gigantic dwarven weapons that are bigger than you. Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon.
  15. ElementalPowers.Video Games: In the Onimusha series, there are several weapons related to elements and magics. In total we had: Earth/Magma: Orange, used with Dokotsui and Chigo. The entry should be moved to Elemental Weapon.
  16. VideoGame.Endless Legend: The favored weapons of the Delvers are massive warhammers, which they can swing in a Spin Attack, damaging everything around them and possibly stunning their target to boot. Various other factions' units, like the Urces or Silics, can also make use of them. Weapon Specialization.
  17. VideoGame.Fallout 3: Quite a lot can be found, also one of the favorite melee weapons for super mutants. They go from hand-hammers that are classed as Shop Fodder, to wieldable sledgehammers, up to the high-tech Super-Sledge. Weapon Specialization
  18. TabletopGame.Rocket Age: Martian War Priests use Hamaxes, hybrid axe hammers, which can do tremendous damage to people wearing armour when the hammer side is used. Mix-and-Match Weapon
  19. VideoGame.Rise And Fall Civilizations At War: Germanicus's weapon of choice. Weapon Specialization. Needs more context.
  20. VideoGame.War Of The Roses: Warhammers are available as both primary weapons and sidearms. They're the realistic variety, having a small head that can easily pierce through armor. 1st sentence is "hammer as weapon". 2nd sentence fits Armor-Piercing Attack, so the wick is placed here.

    Thor's hammer, Mjolnir (4/68)
  1. Villain: Exit, Stage Left: In the Prose Edda, after Utgard-Loki explains to Thor how he and his companions were bested by forces far more powerful than they appeared, he uses his magical powers once more to make himself and the halls of Utgard to disappear before Thor can Drop The Hammer to smash them.
  2. Characters.Akatsuki Blitzkampf: Summon Magic: She can even summon Fenrir, Mjolnir, Gungnir and A MASSIVE DRAGON to attack her opponents. And a Valkyrie as her Reflector
  3. Characters.Record Of Ragnarok The Heavens: Well, duh. Mjölnir is easily twice its wielder's size but still retains a normal hammer's proportions. There's a handle built into the handle just so Thor's hands can have a firm grasp on it.
  4. WMG.Fate Grand Order: Don't forget Thor from Prisma Illya, with Mjollnir as his NP and Megingjord as one of his skills (maybe). If a Divine Spirit like Artemis can be summoned, why not?

    ZCE / contextless potholes (7/68)
  1. Single-Minded Twins: Tokyo Ghoul: While never explicitly stated to be twins, the Bin Brothers function as a single character and never show their faces. After their death, their kagune are combined together to repair Dojima. What is Dojima?
  2. Characters.Lethal League:
    • Sonata as part of group image caption
    • A boombox/mike hammer, to be specific.
  3. Characters.Villain To Kill: Does this frequently.
  4. ComicBook.Strontium Dog: "Der Happy Stick." ZCE.
  5. Fanfic.Snuggles The Symbiote: Enlarged, rocklike PowerFists that prompt Ashley to quote the Thing's catchphrase the first time she uses them from Benjamin "The Thing" Grimm of the Fantastic Four. Later on, they take on more of the Thing's unique properties, and a little later Ashley is able to use it on other parts of her body and enhace it with Deadpool's Riot codex. What is Riot codex?
  6. MeaningfulEcho.Anime And Manga: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS: Shortly before splitting up to sabotage the Saint Cradle's engine, Vita tells Nanoha not to worry about her since she and Graf Eisen specializes in smashing stuff and "There's nothing in this world we can't destroy". During the penultimate episode of the season, while Hayate cradles a heavily wounded Vita who thought she failed to break the engine, Hayate tells her that against such valiance that she and Graf Eisen had shown, "There is nothing in the world that they can't destroy", just as a portion of Graf Eisen that had lodged itself into the engine causes an explosive chain reaction. What is Graf Eisen?
  7. Pantheon.Abilities: Portfolio: Drop The Hammer Contextless pothole.

Covers more than one usage of the above (1/68)
  1. Literature.Proven Guilty:
    • The monster Hammerhands. ZCE
    • [[spoiler:Charity wields a steel one as part of her arsenal in charging Arctis Tor.]] as weapon?

Opened. I agree with disambiguating.

As a side note, we can probably have a bulletin for the dewicking project since this is one of the Chairs-y projects we use those for.

I would have expected this trope to refer to dramatic moments of smashing a hammer down on an object.

Aren't hammers associated with strength because they're heavy and fictional hammers are so disproportionally large they should topple the user with any swing? Or Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon covers it enough?

disambig[tup]

[up]Yeah, there's probably a trope to be made for "ridiculously gigantic sledgehammer as weapon" a la BFS, since the heads of historical warhammers tended to actually be about the same size as a carpentry hammer. I don't think Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon quite covers it since warhammers tend to be more of a knightly weapon in fiction, especially associated with paladins.

I think I would be more inclined to call it something like Hammer Of Unusual Heft or Hilariously Hefty Hammer to get the definition across better, but yeah.

I doubt there are enough examples in the wick check to make a remake possible at this stage, so to TLP it has to go.

Again, do we even have enough examples of disproportionally large hammers on-page? If someone sandboxes a good dozen or two, it may be worth considering. The description doesn't sound like it would need a lot of changes though.

Giant hammers as weapons seems tropeworthy to me, so I guess a cleanup might be the best for now.

But that's not what the trope is. Drop The Hammer isn't "big ass battle hammer", it's "a hammer is used as a weapon". Cleanup won't help.

Carry a Big Stick is about giant bludgeoning weapons and says that hammers should go on Drop The Hammer so I think we can just use the former trope for now. Admittedly, being disproportionately bigger than the wielder isn't a requirement though.

EDIT: Actually, it's clubs, maces, and any stick weapon in general so nevermind I guess.

[up][up]Yes, that's why most of us are saying to disambiguate the trope at issue. Creating a new trope for oversized hammers is a side topic.

We can always sandbox any examples that could go to a potential TLP draft, but yeah, launching new tropes is outside this thread's scope. As usual, new launches could be added to the disambiguation page after they're live.

I agree that "people fight with hammers" isn't a trope, and that we should disambig. I'd suggest adding Weapons of Their Trade to the disambig list (Carpenters fight with hammers).

Bigotry will NEVER be welcome on TV Tropes.

Trope Repair Shop: Drop the Hammer
27th Dec '23 5:03:38 PM

Crown Description:

There are concerns that Drop The Hammer is People Sit On Chairs due to the use of a weapon (hammers, in this case), not being a trope on its own, with most hammer usages with meaning are already being covered by other tropes, including, but not limited to, Weapon Specialization, Brutish Character Brutish Weapon, and Weapon Based Characterization. Should Drop The Hammer be disambiguated?
