Everything's Better with Spinning is pretty much a list of everything that spins in fiction, not to mention part of the infamous "Everything's Better With X" snowclone family.

I think it has enough subtropes to be converted into an index (which should be titled "Spindex"). We should take a look at all the wicks to this page and change them to more appropriate subtropes if one exists, and delete the rest.

You know, is there some kind of Spinning Is Cool trope?

Tropeworthy or not, I don't think we should "cut" something with 2000+ inbounds. At the very least, we should redirect the name to an index.

You know, is there some kind of Spinning Is Cool trope?

I'm inclined to think that not only isn't there, but it would be misleading for us to have one. Spinning is a basic motion that could me done by any number of things in any number of contexts, and have all sorts of meanings or uses. Things spin, all by itself, is rather chairsy.

However, certainly we have no shortage of tropes where spinning of some specific sort has a specific meaning, as the long list on the page shows. Therefore an index would be very appropriate.

Redirecting the name to an index and moving the examples on the page into the more appropriate tropes (if that can be done) sounds like a good idea.

The description, image, and quote all still work for Spindex, with the exception of "trope" for "index". We can probably just copy everything above the example line to the new page, change "trope" to "index", and turn this into a redirect.

If any tropers want to review the current examples for additional subtropes, that would be a bonus.

[nja] Spindex or The Spindex?

[up] The Spindex works a little better...Spindex on its own, now that I think about it, sounds like a line of clothing for whirling dervishes.

Hmm, I thought that "spinning something to make it cooler" could be a trope, but maybe it's just my own perception (which would fall under Moment of Awesome, not any objective trope).

In the meantime, a rename and repurposing to an index like This Index Is Spinning seems OK, although it's a lot of wickwork.

[up] The problem is that with "Spinning makes things cooler", what is cool and what is not is subjective, which will end up bringing the trope to the exact same problem it has right now, of listing everything that spins as an example.

Well, spinning is quite often used as sort of a dynamic or motional greeble. Something tacked on to make it seem more visually interesting. Which may be related to or actually be When Things Spin, Science Happens.

It's also used to show power, considering it can be a fast motion (which indicates power) without actually moving the object in any direction, or a more powerful version of a non-spinning action or object.

Spinning could be used to show power, or it could be used to show drunkenness. That's an example of why there might be tropes for specific uses of spinning, but no one trope saying "spinning always means this."

Which is why I like the index idea: "spins" isn't a trope, but there are a lot of tropes that use spinning.

We seem to be in agreement to rename this and turn it into an index, and maybe to YKTTW any other trope buried in this mass of "this spins".

Starting cleanup. Here are some examples which don't have enough context for me to fix:

A Certain Magical Index Other: Violence Donut allows her to increase the centrifugal force of her movements.

Agarest Senki: She can fling that weapon with a chain in hand.

Air Master: Completely blank example apart from a sub-bullet saying "Maki can mean roll".

Alice in Wonderland: "Forward backward inward outward come and join the chase! Nothing could be dryer than a jolly Caucus Race!" (Also in the Disney and Characters namespaces)

Anarchy Reigns: The 360 spin gets you out of a ground combo and sends your enemies flying away at the cost of some of your life (except when someone equips the spin master perk)

Angel Beats!: Episode 8.

  • Episode 12, combined with Dance Battler.
  • He also looks exactly like a character in the Korean Manhwa Hip-Hop, with long blonde hair and headband covering his eyes

Angry Birds: The "Year of the Dragon" episode of Seasons introduces the Mighty Dragon which does the same thing as the Eagle but in a different fashion.

Animated Film: —>"And now the spinning. Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile."
"You just gestured to all of me!"
"Thank you for summing that up."
"Dat-da-da, we're dead."
"Pain, love it."

Anime & Manga: Naruto also does this with training which does not involve rules— any time he can't get past a certain stage of a training he always finds some clever way to bypass it. For instance, Jiraiya figured he couldn't get past a point in the Rasengan training because he couldn't randomize the rotation of chakra with one hand—so Naruto just used his other hand to make the rotation random himself.

Anti-Air: BIONICLE: the Venom Flyer's Rhotuka prevents targets from flying, naturally or mechanically.

Asura's Wrath: Gohma Squashers

StargateSG1.A To F: The Stargate itself, which has a center ring that spins when SG-1 is dialing. Interestingly, gates with functional DHDs don't spin, suggesting the spinning might be some sort of manual control. This was Lampshaded in the 200th episode during the Thunderbirds parody sequence. As they were preparing to activate the Stargate for the first time, Gen. Hammond demanded that they make it spin, as it would be so much cooler that way.

A Trusted Friend in Science and Ponies: The anti-mass spectrometer spins, just like in Half-Life.

Characters.Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes Season One Antagonists: Completely blank example.

Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog: Completely blank example for Rouge the Bat.

Archipelago Exodus: Example only consists of "Ganesh".

Armor Hero: Completely blank example.

Art of Fighting: John Crawley: "Flying Attack, Jet Bomber". Mr Big: "Spinning Lancer".

Backyard Sports: The spin cycle powerup in Backyard Skateboarding.

Banana Shpeel: The foot juggling act.

[up]If Everything's Better with Spinning is used as a pothole in an example, you should just un-pothole it, not comment out the whole example.

This example from Gravity would work for a hypothetical trope named Spinning Out Of Control:

  • Everything's Better with Spinning: No, it's not. A piece of debris hits the shuttle, sending it spinning. Stone is still attached to the claw arm; when she unhooks the tether, she's tossed into space and can't stop spinning, which means she's unable to orient herself.

Most of the Theatre/ examples are about Cirque du Soleil acts. I don't know what to make of those.

Another one not covered by the indexed subtropes is spinning death animations for video game characters. This is definitely worth troping on its own, unless we fold it into Death Throws instead.

Spinning as a means of transformation (as in Wonder Woman) or drilling into the ground (as in Superman) come up a fair number of times.
