TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

Another stub located: Webcomic.R Typic

Little description, three tropes (including 1 trivia), and furthermore the webcomic doesn't exist anymore on the site linked.

@2195: Also voting to simply cut the ABS-CBN pages on the philosophy that they probably need to be completely re-written; may as well start from scratch.

Worklist, as well as some comments on the entries for 3 days ago:

  • Afrofuturism: The page was created one year ago; I can try to call ~druminor but I don't think they'll respond.
  • Faint Moment: A final comment request; merge or no into Fainting? (It's a duplicate thereof)
  • The Hypnotizers: That editor apparently doesn't reply to messages; anyone agree with a cut, otherwise?
  • Phailaenopsis: Stub work page; creator messaged.
  • Slappy To See You: Trope launched without YKTTW; needs some crosswicking and more examples. Also, the trope title looks like dialogue. By ~tireurroyale.

The ABS-CBN pages can all be cut in my opinion; if the creator can work on them well they can do so later.

  • Re: Faint Moment — the one novelty of that page compared to Fainting is that it lists examples of "fainting from eating something bad/poisonous" and "knocked unconscious". These would require new softsplit categories on Fainting. Which would involve little effort, only I am not quite sure if "getting knocked out" is really the same as Fainting.
  • Re: Slappy To See You — much better than your average rogue trope, but plagued by excessive trope-dropping and those ugly chained potholes. The image is non-indicative (I only see a kiss, no slap).
  • Re: Doomed Hurt GuyKooshmeister fixed some of the issues, but the Zero Context examples are still there, and there was no discussion on whether "aversions" are notable.
  • Re: Afrofuturism — a clear cut. There's virtually no content and no examples.

To speak the truth, I would prefer to send all rogue tropes (by which I mean: trope pages that have not been in YKTTW) into YKTTW as a rule. We people here may fix some of the problems of these pages, but we cannot replace YKTTW: YKTTW is not only for fixing formatting and other obvious stuff, but also for detecting duplicates or overlaps with other tropes, collecting examples, discussing the trope name, finding related tropes etc. We have YKTTW for good reasons and trope creation without YKTTW should just not become acceptable.

I put up Slappy To See You as my first contribution, I'll happily work on refining it and submitting it to YKTTW as I ought to have:

  1. I got a copy of How To Train Your Dragon last night so I could flesh out the picture with the leading punch. Uploading now.
  2. ~Septimus Heap: AFAIK the title isn't dialogue–I was angling for a pun. My research on the phrase only turns up a paucity of search results leading to this dad joke: What did the hand say to the ass? Slappy to see you!
  3. ~Lord Gro: What's the preferred protocol for pulling my premature trope and putting it through YKTTW instead? Still learning.
  4. I definitely paved the trope with Pot Holes. Agreed the references need to be pruned and worked into the text better. I imagine when it comes out of YKTTW it'll be in better stylistic shape.

I've improved the image, deindexed the trope, and have a YKTTW going (that I can't external link as a new account).

I'll delete the trope as well if that seems prudent. I've left it CrossWikied in 3 places, and can either remove those, or leave them up and red in anticipation of the article's approval.

Do not -do not do not do not- blank the page. If you want to remove the page until the YKTTW is ready, send it to the cutlist.

Regarding sending stuff back to YKTTW, one thing worth noting is that we need a sponsor for each such attempt; if none is forthcoming (and for several reasons, I can't do that) it won't happen.

This leaves One-Eyed Shot, Doomed Hurt Guy and Benevolent God (a stub trope made without YKTTW by ~Mslsb, may be cutworthy on its own).

Regarding Fainting/Faint Moment, I have no problem with new soft-split categories. Regarding Slappy To See You, a line of dialogue modified by a pun is still a line of dialogue and problematic for that reason. As for working in YKTTW, the method here is that you put the source text of the page into YKTTW and cutlist the page.

When In Rome Do As I Do was apparently launched without a ykttw about a year ago, has only three examples and two internal links, is a Stock Phrase-based trope made after No New Stock Phrases was implemented, and is superfluous to Going Native.

Magical Guide appears to be an attempt at a supertrope created in 2012 with only three examples and no ykttw.

As for the rest (The Hypnotizers, One-Eyed Shot, Magical Guide, When In Rome Do As I Do), they all look like they could go somewhere if they would actually go through YKTTW. (Not so sure about Benevolent God, which sounds like the stub of an essay rather than a trope description.)

Frankly, I don't know what to do about all the YKTTW shirkers. It is obviously not a solution if the few tropers who attend this thread take it upon them to run them all through YKTTW. It would be much preferable if the trope creators did that themselves, because experience suggests that if there isn't a sponsor who is interested to run the draft through the YKTTW process, it will just sit around and gather dust. Maybe we should just message the creators and tell them to bring their tropes to YKTTW, and if they don't do that, then the page will just be cutlisted after a certain deadline.

Found a new issue when namespacing Furry Fandom: Podcast.Act Fur has a short but seemingly functional description, but only has one trope once I removed the FF entry (since Useful Notes pages aren't to be used as trope list entries).

Earliest of the four updates (including mine just now) was in July of this year, and only one other page pointing at it. No idea about what it is, so can't help any with fleshing it out.

Oh, and the one related link? Podcast.Bacon Quest, which has the exact same problem of being a stub page... complete with use of Furry Fandom as a trope entry.

[up]Because Administrivia.Useful Notes Pages In Main is locked, we can't comment out examples quickly if we don't believe they belong there. Furry Fandom is an example that is very controversial, and has been to TRS twice, we were trying to get consensus in the Short Term thread "misplaced pages on Useful Notes Pages In Main" whether it really belongs on the Useful Notes Pages In Main page or whether it should be removed as a trope or trivia. Mark Lungo moved it to Useful Notes today, but I wouldn't be in too much of a rush to get that off the Administrivia.Wick Namespace Migration page (just in case it moves back to Main/)

Wish you had mentioned that before I knocked out the A and B entries. A bit over 100 wicks changed/removed, I think.

In any case, whatever the fate of Furry Fandom, even with those entries the two I mentioned would still be stub pages. tongue

[up]Adolf Hitler still has his 1000+ wicks if you want a job to do. I've got bored of namespacing Der Fuehrer, (and his face) and am concentrating on trying to get a lot of creator pages moved to their respective namespace. Anyway, I shouldn't be talking offtopic.

  • Doomed Hurt Guy — I PM'ed Kooshmeister earlier about ykttw and asked if I could help. Awaiting the answer.

  • Music.Backbeat Switch — Any thoughts on this page? I voted to have it cut earlier.

I fully support Lord Gro's suggestion. The number of tropes created without ykttw that meet the wiki's standard is minimal. PM'ing and asking all of them to run it through ykttw (and warn them if they do not do it, it's going to be cut) seems like the best solution.

Honestly, this thread takes lots of energy and at the end, it might not really be worth it, and I say it as only somebody who sometimes check pages that Septimus kindly brings up. I tried to do it more regularly and consistently, but I couldn't (and still can't) find the time.

Poor work pages get cut, so tropes in poor shape should too.

So Mid Air Refueling is on hold for its YKTTW. Serial Dater, Violently Protective Boyfriend and The Kindness of Strangers are in the "YKTTW or not" stage.

As for cutting problematic YKTTW-less pages: While we can do that for very poorly done articles, more "intermediary" articles are an issue.

I didn't launch Magical Guide- it looks like the history from when that happened has been lost. I found the page via the random button and added some examples. At the time, it was my intention to bring it through YKTTW with a rewrite, but it fell by the wayside.

The guy who launched Doomed Hurt Guy responded to my PM once but he seems to think that the page is fine as it is — I don't think he quite grasp the concept of ykttw, the fact that we operate as a community, and that consensus is vital.

Is it too extreme of me to suggest to have the page cut? If the page is gone, perhaps he would be more willing to run it through official path.

Today's work- and replieslist:

  • Bravely Second: Stub work page; creator messaged.
  • WMG.Deus Angst Machina: A WMG page for a trope. I am not sure whether it's a problem at all, but worth noting regardless.
  • Doomed Hurt Guy: I recall that this thread also had disagreement on whether the page needed a fix; a poll may be necessary.
  • The Hypnotizers: Any more comments?
  • The Red Necklace: Stub work page; creator messaged.
  • The Rogue King: Stub work page in wrong namespace; creator messaged and page cutlisted. If there is anythign salvageable in the wicks, it should be recreated in the right place.
  • Shetland: Stub work page; creator messaged.

Any more opinions on Faint Moment, Benevolent God, When In Rome Do As I Do and Magical Guide?

Also, today's worklist:

Also, a small issue of mine: When I launched Video Games I did explicitly (per the YKTTW discussion) include a comment that pages who had already more specific indexes should not be there. And yet, Viper Acid ZX went ahead and added a few games which already had better indexes (and they were aware of the comment, since they edited around it), plus some really questionable Example Indentation.

I also think that fewer but more specific indexes offer better navigation and readability than an index block bloated with generic ones. I suggest purging all entries that have more specific indexes from the Video Games list.

I found a trope that slipped under the radar from a year ago: Hyper Focused Crowd. Only two examples.

It did have a YKTTW, but it looks the guy went ahead and made the page without completing the process (only one hat), so booo.

I'm sorry about the Video Games indexing, it's just that there's so much to work with, especially long-running series that I wasn't sure how to index them.
