Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Generic examples, and outright misuse for that US politics entry for the reason mentioned above. Nuking that entire folder wouldn't bother me in the least, though I'd suggest holding off on making it NRLEP unless it gathers more crap after such a nuking.

Nuked it, and referenced this thread. I don't think we need to ban RL examples at this point.

I think the RL section of Man on Fire has some Flame Bait. It probably looks disturbing and squicky to some people (including me) but I want to know if this right. Sorry, it's the first time I'm discussing this so I don't know how to act properly.

Bringing it up here is a good idea. Probably the best way to go about it.[tup]

As for the page, I don't personally think it's a problem, but removing picture links would probably be a good idea. If there are some disturbing descriptions, they can be rewritten as well.

The examples aren't terribly bad, but could use some cleaning. Aside from the usual bullet errors, there are also a bunch of examples that are basically written as:

  • [Long generic description of a type of examples that may or may not commonly occur.] [Short mention of a specific example of that kind, usually without additional context.]
That's a fairly common type of example in Real Life sections. Essentially generic "examples" that masquerades as specific examples by only meeting the "specific" requirement on a technicality.

Well, I see that most of them are Driven to Suicide and Disproportionate Retribution (both present on NRLEP. I know there's no link for either in that RL section but still...).

I wanted to say that there's three tropes that have NRLEP in their description, but aren't actually listed on the index:

And I'd like to know if you think they should officially have Real Life examples forbidden. My opinions?
  • ADIN would probably be listed under the "Morality" section, and I see it being added there.
  • EDS would be either under "Too common" or "Attracts complaining, flamebait, and natter", and should also be added.
  • PF... I think should have a RL section. We don't have a "Too squicky" category, and it's not that common...
What do you think?

Umm, I think you're high. Pooping Food is not a thing that happens in real life. All should remain NRLEP.

Sure it does. Plenty of animals feed on excrement including their own, which is sometimes purpose made for this.

Well, there were some sorta-RL examples in the TLP draft... but okay, so ADIN goes to "Morality" and PF goes to "Impossible", but where does EDS go? "Too common" or "Flamebait, complaining and natter" (Because it can be used in a dickish way, like "This actor was a bedwetter until high school! They are stupid!")?

I got kinda [nja], since my post was made after Fighteer's and before Septimus Heap's...

The trope is "animal poops perfectly edible and fully prepared food". Not "animal's excrement is edible". For example, if you've seen real life rabbits defecating candy or freshly scooped ice cream cones, some biologists would like a word with you.

The trope is not so narrow. "Someone can eat this" is not the trope, sure, but poop taking an edible form and being so is. In rabbits incidentally, if memory serves.

I take it you're drawing from some resource other than the trope's description, then?

Sometimes, however, one can come across a creature or whole species that defies this common knowledge and instead, they poop perfectly edible and perfectly looking food.

Grammar issues aside, of course. Someone goofed on that one.

No, because " edible form and being so" is mostly the same thing as "they poop perfectly edible and perfectly looking food."

I am inclined to be extremely picky about what we file under "impossible in Real Life" because I've seen way too many things being proposed on a misreading of the trope description or on not knowing about the things that happen in Real Life.

I'd say the description is saying that it's both edible and looks like food. Rabbits poop two different kinds of poop, one of which has a bunch of fungus in it and is edible (cecotropes). The poop does look kind of like animal food pellets. (Also, the source I linked says that "rabbits deprived of their cecotropes will eventually succumb to malnutrition. Cecotropes are not feces.")

So I'm inclined to agree with Septimus. It seems perfectly possible for food to come out the bum-bum in the animal kingdom.

The impression I got for that trope is "animal poops out something that a human would recognize as food." That would rule out things like the rabbit example (btw, guinea pigs do that, too). The only RL example I can think of that might come close to the trope is the coffee beans that pass through a civet's digestive system, but those are not actual poop.

I think it's pretty clear from the trope description's "Perfectly looking food" that it must actually look like what the audience recognizes as food. Feces that happen to be edible, but still look like feces, don't count. So, unless the intended audience is made up of coprophages, I'd say it's impossible in real life.

Embarrassing Damp Sheets should go to the "Too Common [...]" folder, for being too common, often irrelevant and Too Much Information.

Changing the topic a bit, Americans Hate Tingle was removed arbitrarily from the NRLEP list.

[up] That was done unilaterally by Mdjj 1996 (edit history). Their edit reason was "There are real life examples, I read it."

Moreover, they unilaterally added Nice Job Fixing It, Villain to the list with the edit reason "I do not read any real life examples for Nice Job Fixing It Villain"

I think it means "There aren't any RL examples, so it is NRLEP." That would be a fundamental misunderstanding of No Real Life Examples, Please!... but that's the only way I can makes heads or tails of it.

We're having a Split Opinion situation right now regarding the three entries I proposed, so they've been added to the crowner.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
