* Tropes which are too common to happen in real life, or tropes which are downright impossible to happen in real life.

For many tropes, having RealLife examples can be fun and sometimes even informative. However, ''these'' particular tropes should not have any examples from RealLife. Note that a work portraying real life is still a work—such examples are about how the work portrays real life, not about RealLife itself. What happened in a certain conflict according to a certain movie or book is usually ''far'' less {{ambiguous|Situation}} than what ''really'' happened in that same conflict. RealityTV is similar: the amount of editing makes them separate enough from real life that the participants on the show can be considered characters (do take care to only trope what they actually do in the show itself, and not their offscreen lives).

Let's talk about what we mean when we say Real Life Examples. We mean saying that a person who is living or has lived, or an existing (or historical) institution, organization, political party, nation ... let's shorten that all up and say "a real thing or person" ... a real thing or person should not be listed as an example of a trope.

In general, we trust people's common sense and ability to follow the Administrivia/RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment. A trope is marked "No Real Life Examples, Please!" when we want to make sure that we are not saying the real person/thing ''is'' the example. Someone external to the wiki might be trying to apply the trope as descriptive of the real person, though, and as long as we can cite and link to where they attempted (attribute it, that is), then the trope can be listed. With attribution.

For example, let's say a Christian, a Muslim, and a Sikh walk into an internet bar.[[note]][[LeaningOnTheFourthWall The barista says to them,]] "What is this, a joke?"[[/note]] All three of them start editing Wiki/TVTropes, and they all start adding RealLife examples to ScamReligion. The Christian adds Islam and Sikhism, the Muslim adds Christianity and Sikhism, while the Sikh adds Christianity and Islam. Then they suddenly all feel outraged ''with TV Tropes'', for having their own religion listed as being a scam. The big point here is that our three religious people have all presented the other religion ''as'' the example. Then a fourth person adds Judaism...

In a UsefulNotes page about one of the religions, though, ScamReligion might be listed as being attributed to the religion elsewhere, by a source we can attribute. It would also be great if we could also find an attributable statement of an opposing viewpoint and make sure that both statements ''stay'' on the page. There are reasons why starting an Administrivia/EditWar is a bannable offense. [[OpinionMyopia One person]] trying to [[Administrivia/RightingGreatWrongs impose their viewpoint as the wiki's viewpoint]] just can't be tolerated.

Also, there are other types of tropes that we don't want real life examples of: sex tropes that focus on the sexual act or the sexual lives of people (as per Administrivia/{{The Content Policy|AndThe5PCircuit}}), MoralityTropes (we aren't in the business of passing judgement on real people), any gossip or stereotype (TV Tropes is not a tabloid rag, and would like to avoid StopBeingStereotypical-related flame wars as well), and any trope that is valid in fiction or other media, but is Administrivia/PeopleSitOnChairs in real life, so common that a section for them is unwieldy or downright impossible in real life.

Keep in mind that just because an example isn't in the RealLife folder, it doesn't mean it's okay. For example, adding "This mindset is common among users of Website/{{Reddit}} and Website/{{Tumblr}}" to the WebOriginal folder of a controversial political trope is a no-go, since the users of these sites are still real people. Same goes for non-fiction works: unless the work itself explicitly mentions the trope, you're just shoehorning your opinions into the article. And music examples should be about the music itself, not the musician's personal life (or death)[[note]]However, as stated above, songs about that are allowed[[/note]].

to:

For many tropes, having RealLife examples can be fun and sometimes even informative. However, ''these'' particular tropes should not have any For others, though, it just causes problems. For those tropes, we don't allow examples from RealLife. Note RealLife, and they're listed on the subpages below.

But first, let's clarify what we mean by "Real Life". On TV Tropes, RealLife is an [[ShrugOfGod admittedly somewhat nebulous]] category
that operates a work portraying real life is still little like a work—such {{Useful Note|s}}, describing examples are about how that may have inspired (or ''will'' inspire) the work portrays kind of examples you see elsewhere on the page. "Real life" doesn't include works ''about'' real life, like a biography or a documentary. In those cases, we're not about RealLife itself. What happened in a certain conflict according to a certain movie or book actually troping "real life", but rather that work's creator's perspective on "real life", which is usually ''far'' a lot less {{ambiguous|Situation}} than what ''really'' happened in "real life" really is. Instead, we're looking at real people, things, and events divorced from anything we might call a "work", even if there might actually be a work about it.

So now
that same conflict. RealityTV is similar: the amount of editing makes them separate enough we've defined "real life", these tropes cannot include examples from real life that the participants on the show can be considered characters (do take care to only trope what they actually do in the show itself, and not their offscreen lives).

Let's talk about what we mean when we say Real Life Examples. We mean saying that a person who is
life. That includes any real person, living or has lived, not, or an existing (or historical) any real institution, organization, organisation, political party, nation ... let's shorten nation, ''etc.'', existing or historical -- in other words, real people or things.

Think of it this way -- here at TV Tropes, we try hard to make everything look like it's written in one voice. That means
that all up and say "a real thing or person" ... when a real thing or person should not be or thing is listed as an example of a trope.

In general, we trust people's common sense
trope, it looks like the ''entire'' wiki has judged it so. And for certain tropes, such a judgment isn't exactly fair, especially because it can often depend on the perspective of an individual editor which doesn't apply to everyone. Say, for instance, that a Christian, a Muslim, and ability a Sikh walk into an Internet cafe[[note]]and [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall the barista asks]], "What is this, a joke?"[[/note]], and each edits the page ScamReligion to follow add the other two religions as examples. To each of them, what they said is absolutely true, at least from their perspective. But when they see their ''own'' religion added as an example, then they get mad, and they blame everyone else at TV Tropes for having added the "wrong" example. And this is how {{Flame War}}s start. But the ScamReligion as a trope is well-established, and there are tons of uncontroversial examples of it in fiction. The problems only start when you add the "real life" examples, which is why they're not allowed.

There are several types of tropes which fall into this category, like:
* MoralityTropes. We aren't in the business of passing judgment on real people. Even if they're nearly ''universally'' thought of as good guys or bad guys, there's always someone who thinks otherwise. (Contrarianism is a powerful thing.)
* SexTropes. We shouldn't focus on the sex lives of real people. That's part of Administrivia/TheContentPolicyAndThe5PCircuit.
* Gossip or stereotypes. TV Tropes is not a {{tabloid|Melodrama}} rag. We've historically had problems with this kind of thing (we're still cleaning up the PersonalAppearanceTropes), and we'd [[StopBeingStereotypical rather avoid being the kind of people who would focus on that kind of thing]], thanks.
* Tropes that may be valid in fiction or other media, but count as Administrivia/PeopleSitOnChairs in real life, just because a "Real Life" section would bog the page down tremendously.

To provide a little more guidance on these tropes:
* Don't try and hide RealLife examples under some other media category. Yes, we can trope someone else's judgment that such-and-such is a ScamReligion, but only if that judgment actually appears in something we can call a "work". Otherwise, it's just a collection of random artists' opinions. And especially don't attribute such judgment to large groups of disparate, unidentified people (''e.g.'' "this mindset is prevalent on Website/{{Reddit}} and Website/{{Tumblr}}" listed under WebOriginal).
* Similarly, even if a RealLife person or thing appears in a work, don't list it as an example of one of these tropes if the ''work'' doesn't do so. That's just you shoehorning your own opinion into the article.
* If you can properly trope someone else's opinion about a RealLife person or thing that appears in a work, ''attribute it'' to that person. And even if you do, please be mindful of
the Administrivia/RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment. A trope is marked "No Real Life Examples, Please!" when This only works if we want trust people to make sure that we are not saying the real person/thing ''is'' the example. Someone external to the wiki might be trying to use their common sense.
* Don't
apply the trope as descriptive of the real person, though, and as long as we can cite and link these tropes to where creators unless they attempted (attribute it, that is), then the trope can appear in a work. Even if a creator is well-known to be listed. With attribution.

For
an example, let's say a Christian, a Muslim, and a Sikh walk into or even describes themselves as an internet bar.[[note]][[LeaningOnTheFourthWall example, we aren't just going to link to random blog posts. The barista says example has to them,]] "What be part of a work. This is this, a joke?"[[/note]] All three of them start editing Wiki/TVTropes, and they all start adding RealLife examples to ScamReligion. The Christian adds Islam and Sikhism, particular issue with musicians, because the Muslim adds Christianity and Sikhism, while the Sikh adds Christianity and Islam. Then they suddenly all feel outraged ''with TV Tropes'', for having their own religion listed as being a scam. The big point here line is that our three religious people have all presented the other religion ''as'' the example. Then a fourth person adds Judaism...

In a UsefulNotes page
particularly blurry; musicians often write about one themselves, but not all the time, and it's important to keep track of the religions, though, ScamReligion might artist's opinion of themselves and ''your'' opinion of that artist.
* RealityTV and stuff like it is a funny scenario here. Yes, the subjects are real people, and ostensibly we're troping them as if they're real people. But reality show participants are very much characters in a work, which is sufficiently edited (often [[ManipulativeEditing misleadingly]]) to be separate from their lives ''outside'' the work. Reality show characters should only
be listed as being attributed examples for things we see them do in the work, not offscreen.
* We have UsefulNotes pages about a lot of real life things, which are particularly subject
to the religion elsewhere, by a source we can attribute. It would Administrivia/RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment where these tropes are concerned. In those cases, they're not ''completely'' banned, but we'd also be great wandering into Wiki/TheOtherWiki's "neutral point of view" and "due weight" and [[VastBureaucracy the rest of its immense policy]] on this kind of thing, so if we could can't easily come up with an uncontroversial way to include the trope in the UsefulNotes page, it should stay off the page.
* Be aware of your own biases when dealing with tropes like this. Some people [[OpinionMyopia can't fathom that anyone can think differently than they do]], and they
also find an attributable statement [[Administrivia/RightingGreatWrongs tend to overstate the importance of an opposing viewpoint this site and make sure that both statements ''stay'' what's on it]], so they end up expending a lot of time and energy trying to get the page. There are reasons wiki to conform to ''their'' version of reality. Don't be one of those people. There's a reason why starting an Administrivia/EditWar is a bannable offense. [[OpinionMyopia One person]] trying to [[Administrivia/RightingGreatWrongs impose their viewpoint as the wiki's viewpoint]] just can't be tolerated.
