Idol Showdown is a free fanmade Fighting Game based off the hololive franchise. It was made by Besto Game Team and was released on Steam on May 5th, 2023 with 4 stagesnote , 8 characters, and 9 assists, with more to come in the future.

On March 17th, 2024 Idol Showdown: Next Fes was announced as a large content update under the Holo Indie program.

    Roster

The playable roster includes:

Italics indicate characters added post-release.

The assist roster includes:

Tropes:

  • 1-Up: The KFP Bucket, which revives you on KO.
  • All or Nothing: The DR. OOPSIE earned in one event space grants a massive damage buff, but deals 10,000 damage to the user once its duration of 10 seconds ends.
  • And Your Reward Is Clothes: Each character has 6 alternate color schemes which the game calls Cosplays. Cosplays 1-3 are available initially, while 4-6 have to be unlocked.
  • Assist Character:
    • There are multiple assists to choose from upon selecting your fighter, each having two different moves: Star Call-In (moves that cost a meter) and Off-Collab. The 9 available upon launch are:
      • Ookami Mio: her Star Call-In is Full Power Flaming Punch, rushing forward slightly up with an Enhanced Punch, and her Off-Collab is Omen, having Mio spawn in with an occult table to cast random tarot cards several times, each card inflicting the opponent with a random Status Effect.
      • Houshou Marine: her Star Call-In is The Aquamarine, with her riding in on a pirate ship to fire exploding cannonballs, and her Off-Collab is Hugging Pirate, where she leaps at an opponent within range to grab them in a hug and never let go.
      • Amane Kanata: her Star Call-In is 50kg Grip, quickly rushing the opponent to grab them in a choke-hold, and her Off-Collab is Soran Bushi, performing the famous Japanese folk dance to summon waves that push the opponent back.
      • Kazama Iroha: her Star Call-In is Eggplant Slice, tossing several eggplants forward before attacking them with a large sword slash, and her Off-Collab is NinNinjanai, with the samurai slashing at ninjas leaping above the battlefield repeatedly - the opponent only getting hurt if they get launched upwards into the katana slices.
      • Ayunda Risu: her Star Call-In is Isekai Truck, driving a large truck to ram the opponent, and her Off-Collab is Non-stop Nuts, where she spawns several floating acorns that fly at different angles as projectiles depending on player input, which'll perpetually respawn for as long as Risu remains summoned.
      • Takanashi Kiara: her Star Call-In is SPARKS, charging forward Wreathed in Flames, and her Off-Collab is HINOTORI, where she floats in front to guard the player character from projectiles.
      • Amelia Watson: her Star Call-In is Ground Pound, where Smol Ame jumps up to slam the opponent from above with her signature attack, and her Off-Collab is Time Slow, using her time-travel stopwatch to slow the opponent for a duration if they're in range.
      • Roboco: her Star Call-In is Hi-Spec Beam, shaping a heart with her hands to fire an energy beam, and her Off-Collab is Hi-Spec Missiles, firing a barrage of homing missiles to directly attack the opponent from above.
      • Sakura Miko: her Star Call-In is Lava Disaster, spilling a bucket of lava to cause a pillar of flames to hurt the nearby foe, and her Off-Collab is Demon King Miko, where she trips and falls upon casually walking near the opponent.
    • The post-release assists are:
      • Moona Hoshinova: her Star Call-In is Supernova, catching the foe in a series of aerial axe slashes for quick damage, and her Off-Collab is High Tide, using the power of gravity to pull the opponent towards her location.
      • AZKi: her Star Call-In is Zero-Guessr, a tracking attack that forces the foe into hard knockdown on hit, and her Off-Collab is ERROR, which has her glitch through various forms and disabling the opponent's Star Specials should any glitches land.
      • Kaela Kovalskia: her Star Call-In is Get Some Help!, winding up with a large hammer and making a hefty swing that sends opponents flying and wallsplats near the corner, and her Off-Collab is Lvl.69 Smithing Grindset, which grants 3 passive buffs to her Collab partner over time.
    • A-Chan appears for several of Sora's moves, reflecting projectiles with A-egis Reflector, tossing Sora up-forwards with A-ssist, and walking forward as a continuous attack with A-nnotations.
    • Sora's beloved teddy bear Ankimo appears during her Super Star Attack to pummel the opponent while Sora dances.
    • Aki Rosenthal, with the use of her heavy attacks, automatically calls upon MukiRose to attack alongside her, who's only limited by a slight cooldown. In addition, her fanbase avatar Rose-tai appears en masse to trample the opponent during her Bottom's Up Super Star Attack.
    • Korone Inugami's X-Potato Super Star Attack ends with her audience's collective avatar Koronesuki appearing to lob a retro-style sprite of a potato at the opponent.
    • Anya — specifically in Kris form — will attach herself to your character periodically swing out at your opponent in Virtual Frontiers mode. This makes her useful for dealing extra damage and catching your opponents off guard.
  • But Thou Must!: Getting the event of Nene asking to be her husband offers four options to choose from. The first three agreeing to marry once, twice and thrice, and the fourth refusing her offer. You're only allowed to pick the marriage options, as refusing results in it looping back to the same options until one of the three is chosen.
  • The Cameo:
    • Independent vTuber Ashino appears sometimes on the "Midnight Rose" stage, referencing one of Aki's streams where she performed several songs with him providing guitar accompaniment.
    • Some Holomems who don't appear as playable characters, assists, NPCs, or in Virtual Frontier events still have some form of appearance in the game.
      • In Reine's Virtual Frontier event, Fauna can be seen on the bridge in the background.
      • In the Collection, Ollie has a poster of Ina and portraits of HoloID Gen 3 on the wall. She also has a body pillow of Sana.
      • Calli, Gura, and Rushia appear on movie posters in one of the stages.
  • Car Fu: Risu's assist will ram at her partner's opponent with a truck at a significant damage.
  • Cast from Money: Hi-Spec Battery, an ERROR accessory that reduces your pekos earned after each fight, but converts those lost pekos into restored health.
  • Developer's Foresight:
    • The "Midnight Rose" stage will change who is performing in the background depending on what track is playing, with one of the possible tracks being a version Aki's "Shallys", in which case she and Ashino will be performing it in the background. However, if it plays while one of the players is playing Aki, only Ashino will be in the background.
    • In a similar fashion, both Mio and Miko can be seen sitting on top of the gate in the Moonlit Shrine stage. If either is being used as a collab partner, they won't be present in the background. Same with Amelia in Gang City and Houshou Marine in the AquaMarine.
  • Easter Egg: Go into the settings and try messing with the announcer's voice volume. If it goes lower than 70%, the announcer will start saying that you can't do that, this is their only job, etc. Not only does this work for both announcers, but they have different lines as well. This also doubles as a Shout-Out to Sonic & All-Stars Racing: Transformed, which featured the same easter egg.
  • Excuse Plot: The Virtual Frontier mode is kicked off with a computer virus rapidly corrupting the virtual landscape and YAGOO's kidnapping. With AZKi's assistance, you dive into the virtual world to purge the virus and save everyone. The virus, however, is capable of creating a clone army of hololive talents to stop you.
  • Forced Tutorial: Virtual Frontier forces you to take a tutorial that explains the item mechanics unique to that mode.
  • Funny Background Event: At the end of a player battle and the subsequent Reveal Shot of the livestream, there's a variety of comments in the live chat of this nature.
Kureiji Ollie: I bet too much money on this...
    Hakos Baelz: EN Gamer move
Tobiki: My dog just died LETS GOOO
Eating M. Dyson's a**: Are you winning, my oshi?
    Press F to pay Respects
Shigure Ui ch.: it's maggin time
  • Frothy Mugs of Water: Played for Laughs with "Mugi Juice", one of the snacks available in the Virtual Frontier, which is obviously just a pint of beer and even puts quotes around "juice" in its description.
  • Gangplank Galleon: The AquaMarine stage, added in the Pekora update, which is set on Houshou Marine's pirate ship.
  • Hard Mode Perks: Axel's Gladiator Chains makes enemies hit harder, but increases money gain, allowing skilled players to get loads of cash quickly. In addition, beating the Virtual Frontier mode with them equipped will unlock the Eternity Bright stage in other modes.
  • Honest John's Dealership: Amelia Watson offers to let you try out random snacks or accessories for a fight, and then insists that you buy the merch she's selling from the back of her van. Many of these items are ERROR quality, which give great benefits in exchange for a guaranteed downside.
Amelia: What? It looks familiar? Trust me, I didn't steal it from this timeline!
  • Jack of All Trades: Korone has a relatively balanced moveset that's easy for beginners. In fact, she's the one character you control in tutorials.
  • Joke Item: Among the starting items in Virtual Frontiers is Vesper's own Plastic Ball. Its description notes that it does nothing, whereas at least the other TEMPUS items state that they're useful for various playstyles. If anything, you'd pick the ball if you don't want the assists from the Light Armor or the Glove Cloak, and can't handle the extra challenge the Gladiator Chains gives you.
  • LOL, 69: As you adjust the announcer volume they will constantly speak to let you know how loud they are. Hit "69%" and they'll just say "Nice!"
  • Meteor-Summoning Attack: Suisei's Super Star Attack involves calling upon a comet to strike the downed opponent.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The alternate palettes of the available characters are based on some of their colleagues they've done collabs with. Some of the unlockable palettes are also based on some of the talents' own alternate outfits.
    • The Gang City stage has the KFP on the far right half of the stage, and the movie posters may occasionally feature the key art for Mori Calliope's ROKI cover or a scribbled silhouette of departed Holomem Rushia Uruha bellowing one of her patented death metal screams.
    • The starting items for Virtual Frontier are items owned by TEMPUS HQ: Altare's Light Armor, Magni's Glove Cloak, Vesper's Plastic Ball, and Axel's Gladiator Chains.
    • One of Korone's unlockable palettes is Sonic-themed, referencing her Sonic costume in collaboration with Sega.
    • Coco's "Next Meme" attack turns her opponent into a meme for a moment. The meme is based on actual memes for each opponent, including (but not limited to) "DOOG" for Korone, Aki's visible disapproval of pineapple on pizza with an emphatic "NO", and Fubuki's "Ya be" face while playing Phasmophobia.
    • Coco weaponizes the Plug-In Type AsaCoco as one of her grabs.
    • One of the events in Virtual Frontier involves a factory full of tiny Vesper clones in jars from one of Magni's experiments.
    • An event in Virtual Frontier gets you a Psychiatrist gig, but your first client is Kronii. Both options lead to you taking a hit to your HP, alluding to the psychological damage Vesper suffered through during his counseling collab with her.
    • The Power at a Price items in Virtual Frontier are labeled as being ERROR-class, thus likely referencing a certain official horror sub-franchise.
    • Given that Virtual Frontier ends with a corrupted Sora as the Final Boss, the fight taking place in front of a dead tree, and the pre-fight description being an ERROR code, it's safe to say that hololive ERROR is what's being referenced.
    • Fubuki's Burger Fox move is based on her usage of the hamburger costume in Fall Guys, as well as her brief adventure through the Wendy's menu and marveling at the menu offerings.
    • It's possible to visit the Hanasaki no Mori in the Virtual Frontier, complete with Miyabi's strangely-drawn animals. Miyabi's sparrow also make a background appearance in the Collection.
    • When loading into a fight in Virtual Frontier, occasionally the loading text will read as something else for a split second before you're in the fight. One such moment includes "UCANDOIYT", a block of text in Roberu's channel URL that reads "you can do it".
  • More Dakka: Botan's moveset uses a lot of guns. Her Super even has her spraying her foe with a mini-gun.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: The Pedas Manja item can be used to instantly win a battle, at the cost of not receiving any rewards at all. A player can strategically use these to skip over fights such as ERROR battles if they are low on HP in hopes of getting to the next rest spot. For obvious reasons, the item is disabled against the Final Boss to make sure the player actually earns their victory.
  • Palette Swap: Every character has a list of alternate palettes called Cosplays. Most of them reference other holomems, such as Korone getting an Okayu cosplay, but some of them are other pop culture icons, such as Korone getting a Sonic the Hedgehog cosplay. This even ties directly into the Virtual Frontier's corrupting virus storyline.
  • Power at a Price: ERROR-class items, which have a debuff to counterbalance the strong benefits they offer.
  • Power-Up Food: Snacks in Virtual Frontier which are random drops or bought from Bar ROBEL. They have a limited amount of uses, however, and require a visit to Reine or Roberu to restock them. Additionally, you can only carry three at a time.
  • Reveal Shot: The end of any battle outside of Arcade and Virtual Frontier has the camera zoom out to reveal the whole thing was a livestream that just went offline, complete with a live chat reacting to the results of said battle.
  • Roguelike: A rarity for fighting games, the Virtual Frontier mode. It features branching paths, random items, events, and limited HP recovery ala Slay the Spire. The encounters also have varying levels of gimmicks to adapt to, lest your run comes to an untimely end.
  • Shout-Out: Moved to its own page
  • SNK Boss: At the end of the Virtual Frontier campaign, you fight a version of Sora with 3250 HP (3 times more than that of a normal player and then some) that can briefly transform into the other characters to use their special attacks.
