  • Actor-Shared Background:
    • The English dub has several cases of this.
      • According to her Twitter account, Jenny Yokobori used to work as a pyrotechnician, which is the occupation of her character, Yoimiya.
      • Coincidentally, both Alhaitham and his English voice actor, Nazeeh Tarsha, share the same birthday (February 11).
      • Inazuma, being based off of Japan, has several characters in the English dub voiced by those of East and Southeast Asian descent. Christian Banas (Thoma), Ratana (Miko Yae) and Anne Yatco (the Raiden Shogun) are of Filipino ancestry, Lily Ki, aka LilyPichu (Sayu) is of Korean ancestry, Risa Mei (Kokomi Sangonomiya) is of Chinese and Indonesian ancestry, Cory Yee (Gorou) and Julia Gu (Kirara) are of Chinese ancestry, and Jenny Yokobori (Yoimiya) is of Japanese ancestry.
      • Sumeru, being inspired by several South Asian and Middle Eastern cultures, has six characters whose English voice actors are either of South Asian or Middle Eastern descent. Elliot Gindi (the first voice of Tighnari) and Christina Assaf-Costello (Collei) are of mixed Arab ancestry, Anjali Kunapaneni (Dori) and Chandni Parekh (Faruzan) are of South Asian ancestry, Alejandro Saab (Cyno) is of Lebanese ancestry, and Nazeeh Tarsha (Alhaitham) is of Palestinian and Syrian ancestry.
      • Much like Kaveh, Ben Balmaceda has relatives who are architects and subsequently has some appreciation of architecture as a result.
      • Caleb Yen is of Chinese ancestry and voices Gaming, a character residing in the China-based Liyue.
    • In the Chinese dub, Gaming speaks Mandarin with a Cantonese inflection, and his Chinese voice actor, Xie Ying, is a Guangdong native where many Cantonese speakers are from.
    • Gaming's Japanese voice actor, Shōhei Komatsu, heavily relates to having a strained relationship with a family who disapproved his dream of being a performing artiste and running away as a result, stating that looking at Gaming is like looking into a mirror.
  • All-Star Cast:
  • Approval of God:
    • In an interview, Wenyi Jin of miHoYo expressed that the company enjoys the fan content being made for the game, whether they are music remixes, fanfiction, cosplays, or fanarts. The Official Twitter account also retweets fanarts regularly.
    • Griffin Burns, the voice of Childe, has stated he likes the Zhongli/Childe ship and has made a few jokes about it.
    • The French voice actor collective Re:Take offered to do an experimental French dub of a few cutscenes as part of a sponsorship, with quite the All-Star Cast. miHoYo approved, and this was the result, making fans crave the addition of an official French dub to the game (although that has little chance to materialize, for obvious reasons).
  • Ascended Fanon: Fan favorite NPC Jeht having gold eyes under her blindfold originally appeared in the "Shadows in the Sand" fan animated short submitted for the 2023 Hoyofair. Later official Hoyo art for Valentine's Day◊ showed Jeht with the same color eyes.
  • Author's Saving Throw: As detailed in this Developers' Discussion article, players complained about the inability to navigate underground areas properly in Sumeru due to there not being a proper underground map, making navigation confusing. In patch 4.0, the developers added an underground map to the game, allowing players to see which layer of the map they're on at all times and highlighting the area certain waypoints connect to when they're clicked on.
  • Blooper: During 4.0, the script for Furina's introduction in the Japanese Dub was badly written, leading to Furina's voice actor pronouncing "raise your glass" (ガラス/Gurasu) as "guroshi"(グロシ/Guroshi), causing some confusion as to what she's talking about. This was silently fixed when 4.2 was released and the scene became a small meme in the Japanese fandom.
  • Breakthrough Hit: miHoYo was not a total unknown before Genshin came out (mobile gacha gamers and action game fans had probably at least heard of Honkai Impact 3rd), but especially in the Anglosphere, they were still not considered a top-flight developer and their works were still considered obscure. Genshin is the title that blasted the company and its lead developers into the global spotlight and made them a household name. Within six months of its release, the game already grossed over 1 billion dollars in mobile revenue alone.
  • Cast the Expert:
    • An unintentional example; Yoimiya's English VA, Jenny Yokobori, states that she was a former pyrotechnician, a fact that miHoYo had no idea about until after she was cast.
    • Yun Jin's singing voice is provided by Yang Yang, who is a traditional Chinese opera singer herself.
    • A darkly humorous example; in the English dub, Collei, who suffers from a debilitating illness, is voiced by Christina Assaf-Costello, who herself has battled serious chronic health issues her entire life (a congenital lung ailment and severe joint problems). During a stream with Dani Chambers (Nilou's English VA), Christina mentioned that when the directors were talking about Collei's sickness, they wanted Christina to "imagine" feeling that way, at which point she enthusiastically chimed in "Actually, I'm wildly unhealthy!", to which the directors replied, "Oh, that's perfect, you relate to the character."
    • Event character Dvorak, a musician, was voiced in English by opera singer Marco "Meatball" Domenico.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor:
  • Character Outlives Actor: Lee Woo-ri, the Korean voice actor of Cyno, passed away on March 14, 2024. His replacement has yet to be announced as of version 4.5.
  • Colbert Bump: In Japan, several Nijisanji members such as Kanae and Takamiya Rion promoted the game as a way to bring in newer players.
  • Content Leak:
    • Datamines and Beta Test gameplay videos are easily spread around large online platforms such as YouTube, Reddit, and Twitter, or even on various gaming news websites. These create long-running hype, with the fans knowing and saving up for the upcoming playable characters even weeks or months before their official announcements and trailers. However, miHoYo has become increasingly aggressive in banning or otherwise punishing leakers, though this doesn't seem to have stemmed the tide of smuggled screenshots very much.
    • In Fall 2020, a handful of then-upcoming playable characters up to early Inazuma were leaked. However, it didn't include all characters in that time range, and some characters were later changed in some manner by the time they were officially revealed. It would take until version 3.4 for the last of these characters, Yaoyao, to appear in the game and complete this leaked lineup.
    • In one of the more infamous cases, practically everything about 1.5—including Yanfei and Eula, two new characters in development at the time—was leaked the same day that 1.4 came out.
    • Sumeru City's unrendered 3D model was datamined from the game's files as early as version 2.8.
    • During the build up for 2.8, a lot of elements related to the start of the Sumeru arc had gotten datamined and got online very quickly, such as the appearances and kit of several playable characters. There were even leaks about the playability and details regarding the Fatui Harbingers (excluding Childe) before the "A Winter Night's Lazzo" trailer premiered. Brazilian streamers streamed an early build of Sumeru live on Twitch, resulting in bans.
    • Even more dramatically, the designs of several Fontaine characters were leaked as early as version 3.3. Afterwards, during the second half of 3.7, higher-definition images of the designs were re-leaked, along with concept arts of already released characters as well as the environment of the then-upcoming Fontaine region. The leaker responsible left criticism to HoYoVerse to tighten up their cyber security.
  • Creator Backlash: A minor one in the English dub. Although Ben Balmaceda enjoys voicing Kaveh, he expressed his regret at making him come across as sounding mean towards Mehrak when it was first introduced during the A Parade of Providence event in Version 3.6, as he initially had no idea what Mehrak would look like while he was recording and assumed that it would be "some fugly ass Ruin Sentinel-looking thing", only for it to turn out looking "super cute" upon release.
  • Creator-Driven Successor: To Honkai Impact 3rd, despite that game still being in service alongside Genshin.
    • Specifically, Genshin uses many of the same basic action-RPG combat systems that exist in HI3, and takes a lot of fairly obvious cues from the experiments in "open world" exploration and combat that HI3 implemented in various events and updates, and is an expansion on those systems in directions that HI3 simply wasn't designed, and isn't entirely built, to go in. Never mind someone who looks and acts a damn lot like Herrscher of the Void showing up in the intro...
    • It's also a successor in another way: Forrest Wei Liu, miHoYo's co-founder, actually would've liked for HI3 to be more international from the start, but it simply wasn't possible early on (especially given the original state HI3 launched in China and miHoYo's capabilities in 2016). Genshin is that vision brought to life: an HI3-like game, released internationally in multiple dubbed languages from the very start, available on enough devices that various international markets will find it easy to get the game on their preferred device (such as mobile for China and Southeast Asia, console for Japan, multi-platform cross-play for North America, PC for Europe, and so on) and designed for somewhat broader appeal and to be a bit less esoteric than HI3 can be at times.
  • Crossdressing Voices: How much this trope applies depends on the dub aside from Xingqiu who is unanimously voiced by a female voice actor in all languages:
    • The English dub has a few male characters being voiced by female actors; Venti is voiced by Erika Harlacher, Xiao is voiced by Laila Berzins, and both Bennett and Xingqiu are voiced by Cristina Valenzuela.
    • The original Chinese dub and the Korean dub have a majority of the younger male characters being voiced by women, including characters who were voiced by men in English (Razor (Chinese and Korean), Albedo (Chinese), Chongyun (Korean), Gaming (Chinese), and Gorou (Korean)).
    • Surprisingly averted in the Japanese dub aside from the aforementioned Xingqiu until Tighnari and Mika were introduced nearly two years after the game's release.
  • Cross-Regional Voice Acting: The English dub is composed of LA, Texas, and (starting with version 3.0) New York talents, as well as those outside of the three states such as Chicago-based Kelsey Jaffer as Yaoyao.
  • Darkhorse Casting: Despite the presence of an All-Star Cast in the English Dub, quite a few characters are played by lesser-known voice actors (when compared to other cast members). Specific examples include Lumine (Sarah Miller-Crews), Amber (Kelly Baskin), Kaeya (Josey Montana McCoy), Sucrose (Valeria Rodriguez), Klee (Poonam Basu), Qiqi (Christie Cate), Ningguang (Erin Ebers), Chongyun (Beau Bridgland), Shenhe (Chelsea Kwoka), and so on.
  • Defictionalization:
    • Some Youtubers have figured out how to make some of the in-game recipes in real life, such as the Jade Parcels from Xiangling's story quest. Even the official Chinese miHoYo website would post some of these recipes, such as the Slow-Cooked Bamboo Shoot Soup, which was done to commemorate Zhongli's birthday on December 31, 2020. The official Genshin YouTube channel later published the "Gourmet Tour" short cooking documentary series, featuring a chef cosplaying as Smilely Yanxiao cooking the featured dish of the video in a replicated set piece of his kitchen in Wangshu Inn, completely with slightly animated intros and outros.
    • The "Adeptal Tales: Longquan Celadon" episode of the "A Journey of Art and Heritage" Chinese artistic culture documentary series features the process of a celadon craftsman making the Echoes of an Offering artifact set.
  • Directed by Cast Member: The voice directors of the Chinese dub, Lin Su (林簌) and Peng Bo (彭博), voice act for Ganyu and Jean, and Zhongli respectively.
  • Dueling Games:
  • Enforced Method Acting: Unintentional example, but Sarah Miller-Crews is a twin herself and sometimes channels some of the emotions for Traveler Lumine's dialogue by imagining the scenarios with her and her own brother.
  • Fake American: In the English dub, Beau Bridgland (who is British) uses an American accent to voice Chongyun in order to maintain consistency with the rest of the cast.
  • Fan Community Nicknames:
    • The official Twitter account calls the Genshin Impact playerbase as "Travelers", the general identifier for the twin protagonists. This also applies to the game's large online platforms such as its subreddit.
    • Although "Mains" is a term that predates this game (referring to players who prioritize their favorite character among many other options), Genshin players commonly use this term to group themselves in online sub-communities. However, there are also alternative community nicknames that are sometimes used:
      • Keqing Mains call themselves "Kittens".
      • Hu Tao Mains call themselves "Ghosts".
      • Childe Mains call themselves "Fatui" or "Toy Salesmen".
      • Players who build Fischl as a support call themselves "Oz Mains" or "Oz Players", though this nickname is very specific and mostly limited to gameplay discussions.
  • Fandom Nod:
    • Some players used Zhongli's elemental skill to forcibly move NPCs, such as Godwin and Katheryne. In a later patch note, miHoYo mentioned these incidents and found them "interesting"◊, yet the skill interaction was fixed so that it can't be replicated anymore.
    • Ganyu and Qiqi never meet in the main story, yet the fandom quickly labeled and memed Ganyu as the mythical "Cocogoat" that Qiqi was looking for. Fast forward a few weeks later, and Ganyu's character demo actually features Qiqi.
  • Inspiration for the Work:
    • If the similarities to Breath of the Wild aren't obvious already, interviews with miHoYo mention that they hold BotW in high regard, and reiterate that the Zelda game served as one of their inspirations for creating Genshin Impact. The Grand Theft Auto franchise has also been mentioned as an influence.
    • Minorly, but still notably, Yokobori once mentioned a partial inspiration for the way she voices Yoimiya was Pinkie Pie.
  • Market-Based Title: Known simply as Genshin in Japan.
  • Meaningful Release Date:
    • One Reddit post pointed out that the game launching on September 28, 2020, is exactly 9 years after miHoYo's first game, Fly Me 2 The Moon, was released.
    • The Version 1.1 update was released on November 11, 2020. It introduced Tartaglia/"Childe", the eleventh Fatui Harbinger as a playable character.
    • Nahida's character teaser was released on October 27, 2022, the same day as her birthday. Unsurprisingly, it is titled as "Nahida: Happy Birthday".
    • Wanderer's drip marketing came out on October 31st, 2022, the anniversary of Bohemian Rhapsody, the song his character references in many ways.
    • Yaoyao, who carries a rabbit-shaped plush toy, was released in the first half of version 3.4, a few days before the 2023 Lunar New Year, which happens to be the Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac.
  • Meme Acknowledgement:
    • A Japanese commercial references the memetically popular Emergency Food description you can give Paimon.
    • Lisa is best known in the fandom for the moans that she makes. It's gotten to the point that even her Japanese voice actress calls her own character out for making lewd noises.
    • In various social media sites, the English voice cast is also very much aware of the community's jokes. For example, Corina Boettger (Paimon's VA), ate a Paimon-themed birthday cake while referencing the "Emergency Food" meme, while Christie Cate (Qiqi's VA), made a now-deleted tweet around her character's "Don't know" lines.
    • During the Version 1.5 livestream, Keith Silverstein, Zhongli's voice actor, let out the line, "In terms of Primogems, we have Primogems", based on the "In terms of Mora, we have no Mora" meme associated with Zhongli.
    • In official OST compilation "The Shimmering Voyage", the music that plays when Scaramouche appears is called "Ominous Fandango".
    • Jennifer Losi has made her own jokes about Ganyu as the "Cocogoat" on a handful of occasions.
    • Zachary Gordon saw some of the many Tighnari the Wimpy Kid edits and found them hilarious.
    • After Eula's second rerun was announced after a year and a half of her absence, Suzie Yeung, Eula's English voice actress, played along with the joke that Eula was a new character.
    • Ben Balmaceda is aware of the memes revolving around the close-up shot of Kaveh's ass in his demo trailer, and has jokingly acknowledged it as a "great shot" during his first Genshin livestream on Twitch.
    • Patrick Pedraza commissioned this artwork which references the jokes about Wanderer working for Honda and Domino's Pizza.
    • Ray Chase posted this in response to the meme on TikTok of people (including those not part of the Genshin fandom) filming themselves dancing to whenever Neuvillette says Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale. Perhaps more impressively, the official Queen account acknowledged it, too, as the meme was set to the beat of "Another One Bites The Dust".
  • Milestone Celebration:
    • The official Japanese Twitter account had a small one after hitting 700k followers on Twitter. As a reward, they released icons of several of the game's characters for the fanbase to use.
    • When Genshin Impact won multiple awards in 2020 such as Best Game, Users' Choice and Best Innovative Game on Google Play and the Game of the Year Award on the App Store, miHoYo thanked the players by giving them 800 Primogems. A few weeks later, another set of 800 Primogems were given out as an appreciation for the game being nominated on The Game Awards 2020.
    • When Genshin Impact won Best Mobile Game at the Game Awards 2021, miHoYo sent out 4 sets of 400 Primogems.

  • Non-Singing Voice:
    • Yun Jin's speaking lines are done by different voice actors in every dub of the game, but when she is singing (in all four languages), she is voiced by traditional Chinese opera singer Yang Yang.
    • Furina's singing voice in all languages is provided by French singer and actress Cécilia Cara, with her normal lines done by different VAs for each language.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • In English:
      • Until version 2.4, Jackie Lastra voiced Diona in place of Dina Sherman for her Hangout Event.
      • Aloy is voiced by Giselle Fernandez (albeit uncredited) instead of Ashly Burch, who voices her in the Horizon games proper.
      • Due to the controversies surrounding Elliot Gindi, the original English voice of Tighnari, he was replaced by Zachary Gordon in update 3.6, with all of Tighnari's preexisting dialogue also being completely redubbed.
    • In Chinese:
      • Amber was voiced by Jun Niunai until version 1.4, where she was replaced by Cai Shujin.
      • Oz was voiced by Li Yuantao, but after controversies surrounding him, he was replaced with Zhao Yuecheng from version 2.5 onwards.
  • The Other Marty: All of Tighnari's voice lines in the English dub were re-recorded by Zachary Gordon in the version 3.6 update following Elliot Gindi's firing in early 2023, with any traces of the latter being the initial voice actor for the character being scrubbed by the company.
  • Playing Against Type:
    • The legendary career of Yukari Tamura was built upon upbeat heroines like Nanoha Takamachi, Io, Ranpha and even miHoYo's own Theresa. Emotionally deadened (literally) and stoic Qiqi is just about as far outside her typical wheelhouse as she's ever been.
    • Aoi Yūki has had a rather varied career by 2020 and often "breaks type", but usually tends toward the more energetic, quirky and nerdy side of things, with characters like Futaba, Kirara and Jinako being her most emblematic roles. The comparatively stoic Lumine, both as a player and as an antagonist, is a much rarer role for her.
    • Dani Chambers (Nilou) said on a stream that she read for all the women in Sumeru, and didn't expect to be cast as Nilou because "I don't really do those soft-spoken, like, cutesy little characters,"; instead, she thought she'd make a good Dori. No sooner had she said this than Anjali Kunapaneni (Dori) revealed that they had also read for all the parts, and had felt their best performance was for Nilou.
  • Prequel in Another Medium: The supplementary webcomic/manga takes place before the events of the game, detailing some events and backstories of characters like Diluc and Kaeya.
  • Promoted Fanboy:
  • Real-Life Relative: In the Japanese dub, Fischl and Kaveh are voiced by siblings Maaya Uchida and Yūma Uchida respectively.
  • Recast as a Regular:
    • In the English dub, plenty of playable characters are voiced by people who previously voiced minor NPCs:
      • Lizzie Freeman voiced Tartaglia's younger brother Teucer before being cast as the voice of Yanfei.
      • Christian Banas voiced several NPCs, such as Ben (or "Man Dressed As Worker") from the Unreconciled Stars event and Crafty from the 2021 Lantern Rite event, before landing the role of Thoma.
      • Cory Yee worked his way up from voicing minor NPCs such as Draff and Huffman to voicing the Abyss Lector enemies, which culminates in him voicing Gorou, who became playable in version 2.3.
      • Anjali Kunapaneni voiced several Inazuman NPCs, including Riku, Etsu, Momoko, and Izumi Naki, before voicing Dori.
      • Alejandro Saab voiced the NPCs Vlad and Zhihua prior to being the voice of Cyno.
      • Nazeeh Tarsha voiced the NPC Konda Densuke in Inazuma. Come Sumeru, he voices Alhaitham, who became playable in version 3.4.

    • In the Japanese dub, Yūichi Iguchi voiced the NPC Teppei before he was revealed to be the voice of Heizou.
  • Reclusive Artist:
    • La Signora's English voice actress requested not to be credited for her work on the game, and as such, her identity remains unknown.
    • Mountain Shaper and Madame Ping's English VA both remain uncredited for their work for the game.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor:
    • Li Yuantao, the first Chinese voice actor for Oz, had manipulated and engaged in inappropriate behaviour with his fans, resulting in a suicide attempt from one of them, all while married. His replacement is Zhao Yuecheng.
    • Elliot Gindi, the original English voice for Tighnari, had also engaged in inappropriate behavior with fans, many of which were underage, and has been fired from the role as of February 15th, 2023. The new English voice for the character is Zachary Gordon.
  • Role Reprise: In Japanese, Ayahi Takagaki reprises her role as Aloy for the Horizon crossover.
  • Schedule Slip:
    • The official manga/webcomic prequel is already complete at 16 chapters, but only for the Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean translations. All other languages are only on Chapter 12/13, with the English version having been last updated on January 3, 2020 (at least according to webtoons.com).
    • On April 28, 2022, Hoyoverse announced that the 2.7 update would be postponed from May 11th to May 31st.note 
    • The Update 4.2 trailer was originally planned to be released on October 27th, 2023 with the update rolling out the following week. However, Hoyoverse delayed it by a week to November 3rd due to the passing of Li Keqiang, the premier of the state of China's council on the original date for the trailer.
  • Shrug of God: At least according to this interview, while Paimon is speculated by fans to potentially turn out to be an evil character, the miHoYo team is "holding Paimon's true nature close to the chest".
  • Significant Double Casting: NPC Example: Will Engel voiced both Katsuragi and Mikoshi Nagamasa, who are the Walking Spoiler characters in Tatarasuna Incident.
  • Similarly Named Works: Beidou's name is written in the same kanji/hanji as the Japanese title of Fist of the North Star (北斗).
  • Star-Making Role:
    • Alongside his turn as Byleth, Aether is the role that catapulted Zach Aguilar into virtual global super-stardom. He was the voice of the protagonist for millions, and he began getting a lot of high-profile roles following his Genshin debut.
    • While Corina Boettger had a decently large portfolio prior to Genshin, their performance as Paimon, who appears voiced in virtually every story beat, rocketed them straight into the spotlight and led to them getting a huge number of additional roles after their debut.
    • Many of the voice actors mentioned in the Darkhorse Casting section have been shot into stardom thanks to their roles in Genshin.
  • Throw It In!: Max Mittelman revealed that many of his lines for Itto were ad-libbed.
  • Trolling Creator: miHoYo has their moments, especially when it comes to chests. One of their favorite things to do with them is have them dump their contents directly off cliffs and steep hills, sending it into deep holes and valleys for the player to try and quickly grab. Then there's the infamous Precious Chest in Komore Teahouse that only gives 180,000 Mora, 3 Raw Meat and 3 Onikabuto, but no Primogems and doesn't count towards the "Lightning-Riding Treasure Hunter (I)" achievement.
  • Uncredited Role:
    • Giselle Fernandez is left uncredited for their role as Aloy in-game.
    • Enforced with Signora's English voice actress, who asked to remain anonymous.
    • Following his Role-Ending Misdemeanor, Elliot Gindi, the man who originally voiced Tighnari in the English dub of the game, has had his name retroactively removed from all Tighnari-related official Genshin Impact media.
    • Brittany Lauda, Chen Yang, and Lee Da-eun, the respective voice actress for Chiori in the English, Chinese, and Korean dubs, were not credited in any official material - in-game or through social media - until the release of the "Blades Weaving Betwixt Brocade" trailer, despite her Japanese VA Ayana Taketatsu being credited in the official Japanese Twitter account for the 4.3 trailer.
  • Vaporware: A Nintendo Switch port was teased early in 2020, but ever since its announcement, there's absolutely no official word regarding this version of the game. However, according to leaked news, it is likely due to weaker hardware and various implementations such as microtransactions and eShop compatibility. While most generally assume that the idea has been shelved until at least the release of whatever the successor of the Switch ends up being, several game sites insist that the Switch port is still coming in every news to this day. In mid-2022, miHoyo stated they would finally announce the release date some time in December, which then came and went without a peep.
  • Voiced Differently in the Dub:
    • Razor's Japanese dub has a noticeably deeper voice than the English dub, as heard on this comparison video. In the Version 1.2 update, the Japanese voices was changed to match the English version.
    • The Abyss Mages sound vastly different between the Japanese and English dubs. Take this comparison video for example. Version 1.2 also updated the Japanese voices to match the English version.
    • Bennett's voice in the English dub is ironically closer to the shonen heroes he's modeled after than the Japanese one.
    • In the English dub, the Fatui Cicin Mages echo their voice and usually grunt when they are hit. However, in the Japanese dub, they don't have any additional voice filters, but they let out ecstatic moans when they are hit. In Version 1.2, their Japanese voice was updated to have echo effects.
    • In Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, Ningguang has a gentle, motherly voice, while in English she has a harsher contralto. Similarly, Yanfei's Japanese voice is much deeper than her higher-pitched voice in other languages. The same happens with Yae Miko, who’s voice in Chinese, Korean and English is more flirty and soft, while her voice in Japanese is deeper and more serious.
    • Childe's voice in the Korean dub is much more aggressive than in the other dubs, making him more sinister and evil sounding. His Japanese dub, on the other hand, is the most lax and playful version, coming off as nonchalant even in scenes where he was originally angry.
    • The English/Chinese/Korean and Japanese versions of Tighnari's voice are vastly different. Japanese Tighnari has a very youthful voice, giving the impression of a Teen Genius, while in all the other languages Tighnari is played in a deeper and more world-weary tone, clearly portraying him as an adult.
    • Ayato’s voice is softer in Japanese, compared to the Chinese and Korean voices, while his English dub is more serious and refined (it even got some errors of inflection in some lines that made him sound more severe, especially when talking about Itto. This was corrected in version 3.4 to make him sound friendlier like in the other languages).
    • Similarly to Ningguang and Yanfei, Ayaka’s voice is more high-pitched in Chinese, while in Japanese is deeper and more in tone with the Yamato Nadeshiko profile.
    • Hanyuuda Chizuru's English voice is noticeably raspy, which fits the threatening image that she was trying to put out. In the other dubs, her voice is much softer, fitting her appearance as a young woman.
    • In all voice-overs except the English one, Alhaitham's voice actors give him a calmer speaking voice. In the English voice-over, he's given a more emotional, sarcastic, and condescending tone, which is exaggerated during his arguments with Kaveh, making him come off as more mean-spirited and childish in the dub. Alhaitham's voice in the Japanese and Korean dubs are also slightly deeper than his Chinese and English voices, making him sound a bit older.
    • While he’s more or less the same amount of expressive in all voice-overs, Kaveh's personality is exaggerated through his voice acting in the English dub, where he consistently sounds more irritable and argumentative.
      • The Japanese voice actor for Kaveh makes him sound more youthful and overly dramatic compared to the other dubs, making him come off as a Large Ham.
    • In the English dub of the Archon Quest Caribert, Eide giggles uncontrollably while speaking, further emphasizing on his mental instability, while in Chinese and Japanese he only swings between speaking calmly and shouting when agitated. Some lines are also voiced differently, such as when the Traveler asks Eide what happened to Caribet after waking up from being unconscious, Eide only sternly warns them not to ask any further in the other dubs while he positively screams at them in Japanese.
    • While she is a minor character, Kaveh's mother Faranak sounds different in the dub than she does in the original Chinese voice acting; in Chinese, young Faranak is very soft-spoken and reserved sounding, which matches how her personality is described by Kaveh and her former mentor, Zaha Hadi. Young Faranak sounds more extroverted and confident in every other dub.
    • Dori's avarice is exaggerated in the Japanese dub, prime example being the voice line where she sings a little ditty about her love of Mora. In the non-Japanese dubs, she's singing to herself, but in Japanese, she's singing at the top of her lungs and drawing out some parts of the melody in a tone-deaf manner. The difference in portrayal has turned the Japanese voice line into a meme.
    • Even if it's clear that she is a princely woman archetype, Furina's Japanese voice actor is the only one to use a Tomboyish Voice, even using ''boku'', a masculine pronoun that's commonly used by young women acting in theaters. The other voice-overs obscure this as they give her a more feminine voice instead.
    • Compared to the other dubs where Furina and Focalors are voiced in the same manner and intonation that makes it clearer they are the same person, the voice actor for the English dub has Focalors talk in a deeper, gentler, and more mature tone in contrast to the high-pitched Furina.
    • The English Dub has Neuvillette sound more expressive in his voice acting, giving him a more authoritative yet gentle vibe while in the other dubs, he sounds stern and more monotonous that he comes off as inexpressive, which makes Navia's outburst at him more sense. Conversely, Neuvillette's voice in the Japanese Dub is higher pitched which made him sound younger, different from the other dubs that gave him Baritone of Strength.
  • Wag the Director: Ray Chase, the English voice of Neuvillette, revealed that he asked and got permission to re-record practically all of his voice lines after doing the final scene at the end of Act 2 in Fontaine's Archon Quest, where Neuvillette voices regret for not realizing what really happened to Navia's father, Callas, much sooner.
  • What Could Have Been: The Announcement Trailer and the Closed Beta tests (such as this one from June 2019) show stuff that were eventually changed upon the game's release:
    • The Traveler being woken up by Paimon in first person view, and it's the first cutscene before they overlook Mondstadt from a cliff. There's also a female voice narrating the prologue, and her story is accompanied by still images. However, the prologue cutscene plays differently in the final product - The Traveler is already awake, narrating how they were stopped by the Unknown God. The scene, both on the beach and the flashback is entirely rendered in 3D.
    • The Ruin Guardians also had an eye laser in the debut trailer, which was likely removed for being a little too similar to the Guardians of Breath of the Wild in a game already dogged by accusations of being a "rip-off". This eventually found its way into the game in the form of the Ruin Grader class of enemies.
    • According to the narrator, the playable Traveler wakes up in the bitter cold, and is shocked at the sight of their sibling being "chained and impaled", then a foreign god "descends from the skies". In the final product, both of the Travelers are initially fine, then the third-party is identified as some "unknown god" who appeared by opening a portal, then taking away the sibling via her space-manipulation powers and placing them in a cube.
    • The Fatui originally weren't going to be that involved in the Prologue Archon Quest in the closed beta version with them pressuring Mondstadt into killing Stormterror only being mentioned by Jean. They weren't going to steal the holy Lyre either with the Traveler instead ending up being caught in the process, but being allowed to borrow it with Jean helping them and Barbara acting as an intermediary for the church. The cutscene of Venti, the Traveler and Paimon leaving the church at the end of the Archon Quest was originally going to be how the Prologue ended with the Fatui and La Signora not ambushing them right after, this meant that Venti's Gnosis isn't stolen. It's implied they were added in the final version to introduce the Fatui to the player as another enemy faction before entering Liyue so the player would initially be more wary of Tartaglia in Chapter I.
    • The beta tests also featured some playable characters who weren't in the launch roster. For example, the June 2019 beta's roster included Kamisato Ayaka (and an eagle-eyed viewer will notice her in the game's announcement trailer, before Liyue was even announced). More notably, Klee and Xiao were available in multiple beta phases, but were both conspicuously absent from the standard roster once the game released. This was notable in part because they had been introduced in promo material well ahead of other characters that had made it in — Xiao in particular was one of the very first Liyue characters announced alongside Xiangling in January 2020, while characters like Keqing and Qiqi were announced all of a month before the September 28th launch! The release of Klee after Venti showed the characters would get in eventually, but it was still a surprise for many that they weren't playable from the start.
    • Some dialogue lines or subtitles from the beta were different. For instance, Paimon's offhand comment about Childe's alias is "So what, you expect us to be servants?" in the beta, but later became "So we're supposed to dote on you?" in the officially-released version. Notably, the beta's dialogue line for that example didn't match what the English-voiced dub was saying, so it was a matter of rewriting the subtitles for consistency's sake.
    • The Developer's Foresight reveals that Xiao originally had a red color scheme, implying that he was originally planned to be a Pyro character. This was changed later as the finalized Xiao has a green color scheme and uses Anemo instead.
    • In the beta versions of the game, Klee had a unique walking animation in which she would confidently stride forward, but it was scrapped and replaced with the standard walk animation of her body type in the released version.
    • Some of the Mondstadt NPC characters had different models in the beta compared to the released version. For example, the flower shop owner Flora used to have an adult model before getting changed to a child.
    • Several characters, including Kokomi and Shenhe, originally had different designs◊ in content leaks that were changed for their final releases. Thoma's model was also slightly adjusted.
    • As shown in Yun Jin's design video, several palettes were considered for her outfit before her current primarily blue color scheme was chosen, including a primarily red outfit and a light blue and white outfit.
    • Nahida's idle and attack animations were more expressive during the early Closed Beta Test for 3.2, before it was adjusted in a later date which became final in the released version (the standout example is her 4th Normal Attack combo where she sticks her tongue out).
    • During the developer video that details the creations of the Ruin Machines, the Ruin and Aeonblight Drakes were supposed to possess T-Rex like arms to complete their T-Rex inspired designs. However, these got nixed since according to Mephisto, these arms serve no function.
    • Qiqi was planned to have a Character Quest where she and the Traveler had to cure a woman and child who would have fallen ill and been plagued by shadowy figures. Qiqi's lines for this character quest were recorded early on in development, but the quest was scrapped for unknown reasons before Paimon's accompanying dialogue was recorded.
  • Word of Saint Paul:
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things:
    • Some of the fans who were upset with the change to Barbara's combat voicelines in Version 1.3 started harassing her English voice actress on Twitter, leading to her putting out a statement explaining that (obviously) she had no input in this decision, and asking everyone to stop bothering her about it.
    • Kokomi's Chinese voice actress was harassed by fans over Kokomi's gameplay and not being so pleased with her role in the Archon quest itself that it resulted in her announcing that she restricts any future livestreaming over the backlash received.
    • Dori's English voice actor, Anjali Kunapaneni, had to close their Twitter DMs shortly after announcing that they would be said character's English VA due to harassment. Most of the harassment centered on the character's skin tone being lighter than expected for a character from Sumeru (a region inspired by India, Middle East and North Africa), which voice actors have no control over, let alone for a game made outside of their country. It wasn't the first time that concerns of representation had been brought up regarding colorism and potential appropriation, but it marked another instance of fandom targeting voice actors of color (including Nahida's English VA) instead of contacting the developers responsible.
    • A section of, mostly male, fans from the Chinese side of the fandom gained infamy after they attempted to destroy the Wanderer banner in 3.3 in the hopes that he would never appear in later events (see Germans Love David Hasselhoff on the YMMV page for details). This was made much worse in the following updates; the moderators on Tieba (a Chinese trolling server) banned any positive mention of Wanderer, and only allowed the haters to fan the flames on him even further, and even made a subforum on NGA (a Chinese gaming forum) for said haters to dox HoyoVerse employees as well. They also harass Wanderer fans, attack his Chinese VA, and even kill cats that look like Scarameow.
  • Word of God:
    • Before Genshin's release, miHoYo confirmed during a stream that the worlds of Honkai Impact 3rd and Genshin Impact are indeed connected through the Imaginary Tree, or rather, both are worlds that exist on different branches of the Tree, but close enough to each other that Otto Apocalypse could briefly peek into Teyvat during a quantum experiment regarding the Imaginary Tree. The CG cutscene eventually made its way as The Stinger of Chapter 17 in HI3.
    • According to this interview, Lisa only has a few years left to live, due to touching a magic book in her youth that gave her powers but shortened her lifespan in exchange, though this is meant to be revealed at a later time in-game.
  • Written-In Absence: Fischl is not present in the 2.3 event Shadows Amidst Snowstorms in spite of the fact that the branch of the Adventurer's Guild she is a part of plays a major role in that story. It is explained that Fischl is busy elsewhere. Beforehand she hadn't been a featured character in any Event Wishes since 1.6. There's an unfortunate explanation for this, as the Chinese voice actor of Fischl's Translator Buddy Oz was found to be cheating on his wife. Since miHoYo wasn't able to recast him very quickly, Fischl was unable to show up, and until 2.5, she wasn't featured on any Character Event Wishes. Oz has since been recast in Chinese and Fischl appeared on Yae Miko's banner as a featured character, ending her downtime.
