Sandbox / Ethnic Scrappy Wick Check

Go To

Here we will be performing a wick check for Ethnic Scrappy.

Why? While Ethnic Scrappy is specifically about ethnic characters that are hated, it sees use for other minority groups as well. An expansion might be needed.

Wicks checked: 20(+2)/50

    Correct use (ethnic scrappies) (18/50) + 2
  1. Characters.Transformers Generation 1 Autobots 1984 To 1985: The Nth Doctor: After Casey Kasem quit the show in disgust over its Ethnic Scrappy portrayal of Arabs (Kasem was Lebanese-American), Teletraan I was replaced with Teletraan II, apparently exactly the same except for the voice.
  2. FostersHomeForImaginaryFriends.Tropes E To L: Eurotrish is one In-Universe: she sings off-key, has a questionable design and voice and was rejected by her creators who found her annoying. However, Poe's Law is certainly in effect.
  3. Funny.Lindsay Ellis 2019 Episodes: The cute little Freeze-Frame Bonus when Lindsay's talking about the infamous crows from Dumbo wherein she points out that despite the racism, their song "totally slaps".
  4. Funny.Zero Punctuation 1:
And if that's not enough, you get a wise-cracking black friend drenched in stereotype. Towards the end, there's a bit where you're given the choice to either save him or let him die, and I could not hit that "No" button fast enough, I tell you that.
  5. GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff.Western Animation S To Z: From 1999-2002, Cartoon Network banned Speedy Gonzales cartoons from airing on the network because the executives deemed him to be an Ethnic Scrappy. Despite the heavy stereotypes, Speedy Gonzales was incredibly popular with Latin American audiences, with Mexico even having a Speedy Gonzales show. After several years of backlash from animation fans, the ban was finally lifted.
  6. Jerkass.Live Action Films: A good example of comic-relief gone awry would be L.J. from Resident Evil: Apocalypse. His obnoxious, stereotypical and totally inappropriate "street flava" nearly makes him a modern day Ethnic Scrappy, and annoyed many viewers. In the follow-up movie, he is killed off, but by then he'd dropped the Modern Minstrelsy crap and became somewhat sympathetic.
  7. LeaningOnTheFourthWall.Western Animation; WesternAnimation. The Simpsons: In "No Good Read Goes Unpunished", Marge rediscovers her favourite childhood book and notices it's full of Values Dissonance, to which Lisa says "Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?", before panning to a picture of Apu. This scene was addressing criticism about whether Apu was or has become an Ethnic Scrappy.
  8. Main.Memetic Loser: Franchise.Star Wars: Jar Jar Binks is such a universally loathed character that he is quite easily considered the most noteworthy scrappy of all time behind the Trope Namer himself. The movies clearly meant to play him up as an incompetent buffoon, making him border on this status In-Universe already, but this intended portrayal plus multiple "jokes" involving him just being lame Toilet Humor plus being such an annoying racist caricature make this reputation in Real Life even worse to the point that most fans consider him to have singlehandedly ruined The Phantom Menace with his lameness.
  9. Mythology Gag.Webcomics: Webcomic.MS Paint Adventures: Li'l Cal shares his name with an Uncle Tomfoolery Ethnic Scrappy character from Team Special Olympics, which may explain his Pretty Fly for a White Guy appearance.
  10. Quotes.OSW Review:
V1: She's a pretty good athlete. But the fuckin' "Fiddly-Fie!" pose and the unsexy board dance—AGH. It's gotta go. Or she's gonna die a death in the WWE. She's got to be sent packing home soon.
Jay: Don't Americans love that shit? That stereotype of Oireland? Aren't they all over it? I can imagine Vince laughing and rolling on the ground over it.
V1: [groans] I don't know. What else is they gonna do now? Is she come out with black eyes? [weeping] "H-He had a coupla drinks and—!"
  11. Recap.Stargirl 2020 S 2 E 08 Summer School Chapter Eight: Eclipso accuses Beth of being one In-Universe, claiming she has the wrong skin color to be a member of the JSA, which was previously all-Caucasian.
  12. TrappedByMountainLions.Live Action Films: The second half of A Day at the Races (1937) has an extended musical interlude which starts with Allan Jones singing "Tomorrow Is Another Day," which is followed by Harpo using his flute to summon a black chorus which sings "Blow That Horn, Gabriel" and "All God's Chillun Got Rhythm." The chorus has nothing else to do in the movie except reappear to sing the finale. Many Marx Brothers fans consider this sequence as objectionable on an Ethnic Scrappy level, while some say it's not really that bad by itself and the choir are very good, but it just stops the plot dead and its earnestness clashes painfully with the Marxes' usual slapstick and wisecracks.
  13. Trivia.Black Crayons: Reality Subtext: Characters being annoyed with Skids and Mudflap's behavior and Ironhide telling them that their accents could be considered offensive matches up quite nicely with what the audience thought of them in Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen.
  14. Trivia.Star Trek Voyager: Creator Backlash: Not long into VOY's run, Robert Beltran stopped playing Mister Nice Guy and openly expressed his loathing of the show's plot, his co-stars (he only signed on to act alongside Geneviève Bujold), the producers, himself for playing such a formulaic and at times borderline racist role, and most of all you for watching it (causing some disillusioned Trekkies to flee a Star Trek convention in tears — true story!).
  15. WebVideo.Better With Bob: [[invoked]] Shudders when a picture of Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's comes up. And does likewise when the caricature waiter pops up at the end of The Mask of Fu Manchu.
  16. YMMV.Annie 2014: They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: They got rid of Punjab the Indian servant in favor of Nash the bodyguard. Again, adding Punjab to the original film was a criticism back in the eighties; he wasn't in the stage version (he was a Canon Immigrant from the comic) and was an Ethnic Scrappy many found annoying.
  17. YMMV.Killer Instinct: Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: Thunder is fairly popular among Native Americans in spite of his stereotypical nature and is more fondly regarded than T. Hawk or Nightwolf, who tend to get Ethnic Scrappy reactions. His 2013 incarnation is even more well-regarded, thanks to his Native American heritage being more focused upon (complete with him speaking the Nez Percé language instead of English).
  18. YMMV.Lalaloopsy:
    • Yuki Kimono and Feather Tell-a-Tale are notably both disliked for being extremely stereotypical depictions of Japanese people and Native Americans, respectively. Feather gets it even worse for being a portrayal of a generalization of the diverse heritage instead of being a faithful, well-researched one.
    • Mango Tiki Wiki receives similar flak for how she was portrayed in “Mango’s Mainland Holiday” as naive island girl who doesn't even speak actual Hawaiian.
    • Sahara Mirage is also controversial for being skewed portrayals of Arabian culture, jumping off of popularized stereotypes like the others.

  1. BaseBreakingCharacter. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic: Despite only appearing in the Ponyville Mysteries book "Riddle of the Rusty Horseshoe" thus far, Scootaloo's aunts have already become two of the most controversial characters in the entire franchise, possibly even more so than Flash Sentry and Starlight Glimmer. In the book, Aunt Holiday and Aunt Lofty are heavily implied to be lesbians, with Holiday giving Lofty an affectionate kiss on the forehead and calling her "dear". Some fans loved the idea of a potentially canon lesbian couple and hoped they made their way into the show proper (which they eventually did), pointing out the large amounts of Ho Yay that Friendship is Magic has and the fact that several other children's shows in The New '10s have included LGBT characters without any issues. Others believe the inclusion of a lesbian couple is a bad idea for a franchise that has largely avoided political themes, and way too risky considering the show airs in countries that condemn homosexuality. Then there's the matter of whether the show did it properly, with Aunt Holiday and Aunt Lofty coming across as either authentic or stereotypical. LGBT

Caillou's Mom: "Why don't we find you a different costume?" *pulls out costume* "How about this?" *shows a mask of an African-American stereotype and a T-shirt reading "Fried Chik'n"*
