  • 13 Is Unlucky: In the Tug of War game, one side has 13 contestants while the other has 12. Despite the seemingly huge advantage the side with 13 has, with having more numbers and a Transformer on their side, Chromedome causes their downfall when he springs a leak which causes his engines to fail and his body pushing his team off the edge to their deaths.
  • Accidental Murder: In the Honeycomb game, When Angel Dust brings out his tommy gun and fires it into his honeycomb, one of the bullets ricochets and hits Quill-Weave's honeycomb, unintentionally dooming her as well. And when Luz yells at Not-Velma for stealing her honeycomb, she realizes that she accidentally crushed Calypso's honeycomb, causing the both of them to be eliminated.
  • A Friend in Need: After Mae saves Zoe from being eliminated in the Red Light, Green Light game, she returns the favor later in the Honeycomb game. Mainly, when she notices that Mae is getting stressed out, she asks Vorahk to strum his staff, which plays a tune that calms Mae down.
  • A Handfulfor An Eye: In the Red Light, Green Light game, Lamby grabs some sand in his palms and throws it into Yang's eyes, which distracts her long enough to be unable to stop moving when 'Red Light' is called and is eliminated.
  • All for Nothing: As gets pointed out multiple times, Jerry of Christ's plans to use the Arena to kill members of the LGBT community was doomed from the start since everyone who dies in them gets revived anyways.
  • Alternate Self: Not-Velma is a variation of the regular Velma that unfortunately for everyone else, is more focused on being a self-absorbed, hypocritical Jerkass than actually trying to help out.
  • An Arm and a Leg: When Yang is disintegrated for failing the Red Light, Green Light game, all that's left of her is her metallic arm.
  • And Then What?: After Mae and Vohrak defeat Not-Velma and Baskerra congratulates Mae on her win and asks what her wish is, Mae doesn't know what to wish for and spends several seconds pondering on it.
  • And This Is for...: As Amorey jumps on Guurahk's back and starts clawing it:
Amorey: "This is for my boss, you demon!"
  • Ascended Extra: Jerry of Christ, previously the first Event Boss of the 10th episode, turns out to be the one who masterminded this Arena.
  • A Wizard Did It: The closest explanation we get for how Not-Velma had managed to take the cosmic being's power that the Prayer Warriors were praying to for her own is "Because I'm just awesome that way!" according to Not-Velma herself.
  • Back for the Dead: Sylvia, who is brought back to life to participate, and doesn't even make it past the first chapter.
  • Back from the Dead: Rainbow Dash and Spike's goal in this episode is to revive Twilight Sparkle. They fail to achieve this goal.
    • When Mae considers what to use the wish for, she considers reviving Casey, but changes her mind on that.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Jerry of Christ, who created the Arena of the episode to kill as many LGBT people as he can just for their sexual orientations. As awful as this makes him, his plan was doomed to fail since everyone that's killed in an Arena gets revived anyways and Not-Velma siphoning the powers from his God for herself and becomes the final threat to Mae.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Several characters end up saving another character from being killed by a member of the Rakshi during the first game. Reiko even shouts "Incoming bunny rescue!" as she kicks Panrahk away from Not-Velma.
    • Mae helps Zoe freeze in place just as 'Red Light' is called in the Red Light, Green Light game.
  • Big Guy Fatality Syndrome: Barbaros, one of the tallest and strongest contestants of the episode, is also the first casualty from a surprise attack.
  • Big "NO!": Amorey screams this over his master Barbaros' death.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Evelyn shouts this in her introduction as she tries to make sense of how she ended up here.
  • The Blade Always Lands Pointy End In: When Turahk's upper body is sent flying, so is his staff. When it comes back down, it lands pointy end down and beheads him.
  • Blinded by Rage: Kurahk's staff turns anyone who's hit by his blasts into a raging berserker, which includes Rainbow Dash who goes into a flying frenzy and kills several contestants in her fury.
  • Blinded by the Light: Luz saves Spike from Guurahk by sliding under him and quickly drawing a light glyph beneath him. As light is the Logical Weakness for the Rahkshi, it gives him tremendous pain.
  • Boom, Headshot!: How a guard kills Mountain for failing the Red Light, Green Light game.
  • Break the Cutie: Whisper takes a huge blow from watching her friend Tangle die right in front of her eyes. The reason she doesn't go into full Heroic BSoD is because of the thought of bringing back everyone she's ever lost.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Implied; When Yang says to Garnet that she gets plenty of love back home, she thinks of her girlfriend Blake... and her sister Ruby. Then again, she could be just referring to Ruby in terms of platonic love.
  • Bury Your Gays: Invoked and then defied; Jerry of Christ's whole plan was to use the Arena to kill everyone who is LGBT because of their sexual orientation or gender identity differing from the one they were born with. But since everyone who's killed in an Arena comes back to life anyways, Jerry's plan is dead on arrival.
  • The Bus Came Back: In terms of contestants, Randal Hawethorne, Juno, Heketa, Nazuna Hiwatashi, Taokaka, Mae Borowski, Lamby, Ankha, Geekcu, Poison, Moxxie, Catra, Marceline, Angel Dust, and Yang all return from previous Arenas. Lehrak also returns, but as an enemy that our contestants have to defeat in the first game.
    • In terms of previous non-contestants, Rainbow Dash, Spike, and Calypso return from the side-stories, and Jerry of Christ returns after only being an Event Boss in episode 10.
    • Bus Crash: During the first game, Lehrak gets torn to pieces by Geekcu and Nazuna ends up getting killed by Kurahk during the Collect the Flags game.
  • Can't Take Criticism: In Not-Velma's Motive Rant, she dismisses the criticisms of her show as just haters and claims that her show was better than ANY work that came before it.
  • Characters Dropping Like Flies: Due to the structure of the episode, contestants start dying left and right, ESPECIALLY in the last two chapters. It's to the point that it's the third episode to only have five chapters.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: When Mae notices Poppy getting her strength sapped by Vohrak's staff, she decides she can't leave Poppy to die and comes up with a way to save her.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Not-Velma lets out a rapid-fire series of f bombs during the Tug of War game as she strains herself pulling the rope.
  • Commonality Connection: Mae begins bonding with Vorahk when he strums his staff like a guitar, it reminds Mae of when she and her friends used to form a band.
  • Country Matters: What The Prayer Warriors clearly intended to call Mae, but because of the (intentional) misspelling, they call her a "SATANIC CANT" instead.
  • Cue the Sun: After Mae defeats Not-Velma and the Arena is destroyed, it reveals a bright sun with some rain fading away, which causes a rainbow to form over the place.
  • Curse Cut Short: When Catra has the misfortune to need her honeycomb cut in the way of the Sistine Chapel, she lets out a MASSIVE F-bomb, but is disintegrated before she can get the full word out.
  • David vs. Goliath: The climax of the story has Mae, armed with only Vorahk's staff, facing off against Not-Velma, who has become a Cthulhu-like being with massive power.
  • Dead-Hand Shot: When Mae grabs Zoe's hand and they make it to the end of the Glass Bridge game. Except that when Mae tries to talk to Zoe, she discovers that she was killed by the guards laser shots, with her hand being the last thing of her that remains before it disintegrates.
  • Death Is Cheap: Reconstructed; When our contestants discover that they were sent to get killed just for their sexual orientations or gender, Moxxie, a veteran of the Arenas, points out that everyone who dies just gets sent back home, meaning that the boss of this Arena’s plans are rendered moot, which calms down everyone significantly.
  • Demoted to Extra: Lehrak, who was previously a contestant in the eight episode, shows up as one of the enemies of the first game and is killed by Geecku.
  • Deadly Game: The setting for this month’s Arena is the popular death game show Squid Game.
  • Disney Villain Death: What happens to every contestant that fails the game of Tug of War.
    • Every contestant that dies from falling into a broken glass plane in the Glass Bridge game, most of them caused by Not-Velma.
  • Dope Slap: Not-Velma gets knocked on the back of her head by either Bridget or Rainbow Dash several times after she makes one too many dickish remarks, though the first time was a complete accident on Bridget's end.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Barbaros, and Sam Sharp get turned into piles of goop, Tangle gets smashed into by Rainbow Dash, is sent flying high, and is killed instantly when she crashes down, Nazuna gets her back broken and is blasted by Kurahk's staff, Mungo is sent flying into Sylvia, whose absorption of Kurahk's body and staff causes an explosion that destroys them, Garnet is killed when Turahk destroys her gem, and Evelyn gets stabbed by Turahk's staff and dies from the shock during the game of Capture the Flags.
  • Everything's Better with Rainbows: A rainbow forming over the ruins of the Arena are used to show that Mae has been victorious over Not-Velma.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When Mountain makes the mistake of trying to get up from his landmine incident while it's 'Red Light', he admits it was his mistake to make and lets out a roar as he's disintegrated.
  • Facepalm: In the first break, Zoe has this reaction to Taokaka wanting to willingly join Lamby's cult with the promise of unlimited meat and Vaggie does this when she discovers that Angel Dust is also in this mess with her.
  • Final Girl: Mae Borowski.
  • Flipping the Bird: When the announcer tells the remaining contestants that the Tug of War game is the second-to-last one, Mae flips the bird while telling him to eff off.
  • Foreshadowing: In the first chapter, Poppy tells her heart not to give up on her now during all the chaos going on in Capture the Flag. Then in the next game, Red Light, Green Light, she dies from a sudden heart attack.
    • When Whisper finishes the Honeycomb game early, she takes time to look at the guards, she feels something bubbling inside of them. Like an intense hatred waiting to burst out of them. The last two chapters make it clear exactly WHY that is. Also during the Honeycomb game, one of them needed to be cut into the shape of the Sistine Chapel, giving a hint as to what kind of people are running the show.
  • Forgot About His Powers: Subverted with Michuru and Rainbow Dash, who do remember they can fly, but their flight abilities fail them as they fall to their deaths in the Tug of War game.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Not-Velma is this for ALL of the contestants past chapter one because of how much of an unrepentant asshole she is.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Yang double-punches Turahk in the midsection so hard it causes his upper half to fly away from his lower half.
  • Heel–Face Turn: When Mae fries Vorahk with a loose cable, it fries the Kraata inside of him, which allows him to clear his mind. When he gets to know the contestants personally and gets sick of his boss' bigotry, decides to help the remaining contestants at the end of chapter four.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: The Arena for this month is revealed to have been created by Jerry of Christ and his army of Prayer Warriors in order to kill members of the LGBT community for their sexual orientations.
  • Hermaphrodite: Most of Nighthawk's team consists of women who are either intersex (Elza and Sylvia) or have transitioned but hasn’t gotten bottom surgery (Poison).
  • Hijacked by Ganon: When Jerry of Christ commands his Prayer Warriors to destroy Mae, they begin praying to their God. Except that their prayers and holy energy are suddenly siphoned by Not-Velma, who then becomes the final threat Mae and Vorahk have to stop while Jerry of Christ and the Prayer Warriors essentially become nuisances.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Kurahk's staff gives him the ability to give people uncontrollable rage, which starts working out when it hits Rainbow Dash and kills several of the contestants in her rampage. This alo ends up being his undoing when the enraged Rainbow Dash throws Mungo at him while being absorbed by Sylvia, which causes an explosion that kills them.
  • Human Shield: Late into the Glass Bridge game, Not-Velma uses Moxxie to take a shot from a guard's gun that was aimed at her.
  • Kick the Dog: Not-Velma just LOVES to viciously insult anyone she can whenever she gets an opportunity to. Probably her cruelest remark is when Bridget tries to raise her team's spirit in chapter two by telling them there's nothing they can't do, Not-Velma's response is "That afterschool shit isn't gonna save your fake-girl ass."
  • "Hey, You!" Haymaker: As Panrahk is holding Juno, Mountain gets his attention by tapping on his shoulder before turning Panrahk’s head into a pancake.
  • Hope Spot: When the remaining contestants in the Glass Bridge game notice Vorahk attacking the guards, it gives them hope of a chance they might escape. Unfortunately, that's when Not-Velma sets her own plan into motion and succeeds in getting every contestant killed except for Mae. Speaking of Mae, when Velma betrays everyone, she grabs Zoe's hand and they seemingly make it to the end together. But when she turns to Zoe, she discovers that she’s only holding her hand, which then disintegrates.
  • Hyperventilation Bag: Alphonse spends the first break breathing into a paper bag as he tries to process what he just went through.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: Max ends his Team Introduction wondering where Sam is since you can't have one without the other. At least until he realizes this might help him increase his chances of that solo run he’s always wanted, to which he embraces his sudden hypocrisy.
  • I Am Big Boned: When Taokaka calls Mae chubby as she's groping her breasts, Mae says that she's not chubby, she's just "overly freaky".
  • If We Get Through This…: During the first break, Reiko tells Elza if they survive the next round, she might give Elza a free sample of her breasts.
  • Impaled With Extremeprejudice: In the first chapter, Ki Ko grabs Guunrahk's spear from his hands and stabs him with it, causing him to disintegrate. In the same chapter Turahk stabs Evelyn with her spear, with Evelyn dying from shock.
  • Inner Monologue Conversation: When Tang thinks back in her head about how the tournaments in her universe usually end in a bout of raw passion, Marceline teases her by verbally asking for the details.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: As Barbaros is hyping everyone up in the first chapter about making this a competition worth fighting for, he's struck by a beam of blue energy, with him only getting a few more words out before turning into a pile of goop.
    • When Zoe gets pushed into Vaggie, she tells her to let go of her, but before she can finish her sentence, she's pushed by Not-Velma into Kylar and Ki Ko and they plummet to their deaths.
    • After Not-Velma shows up with her post-One-Winged Angel transformation which changes most of her body into a mass of tentacles, Mae thinks this is what they meant by 'Squid Game'. To which a guard points out that's not what it means, and gets crushed by a tentacle before they were about to insult Mae.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: After hearing Not-Velma's explanation of her sudden newfound powers, Mae exclaims "Hold up! How the fuck does that work?! This is all reading like a bad fanfic!"
  • LOL, 69: Nighthawk87's Team Introduction begins with the narration stating that if there were enough jumpsuits, Reiko would have had 69 as her number.
  • Loophole Abuse: In the Honeycomb game, the contestants have to cut the right shape into the honeycomb, or they'll be eliminated. However, there's no rule against taking someone else's honeycomb and claiming it for their own, which Not-Velma does by taking Luz's honeycomb for herself, which saves her and gets Luz eliminated.
  • Medium Awareness: Not-Velma is aware of the fact that the Rahkshi comes from a popular LEGO toyline. During the third break, she sarcastically hopes that Vohrak can fetch a good price on Ebay. She's also well aware of how reviled her show is, which is one of the reasons she plans to betray the remaining contestants and get the wish for herself.
  • More Dakka: Angel Dusts' solution to making the shape he needs for his honeycomb. Surprisingly, this doesn't work at all.
  • Mythology Gag: Moxxie once again being mistaken for a possum.
  • Neck Lift: Juno grabs Heketa by the back of her throat to get her to let go of Evelyn, who she pounced on.
    • When there's only one Rahkshi left to deal with, Turahk, he's seen holding Ankha by the throat.
  • No Body Left Behind: Barbaros and Sam Sharp get reduced to puddles of goop, Sylvia, Kurahk, and Mungo get completely destroyed by Sylvia’s blast, Garnet poofs away when Guunrahk destroyed her gem, disintegrates when he's stabbed with his own spear.
    • What happens to every character who gets disintegrated by the guards' guns.
    • Among Not-Velma’s arsenal of powers includes beams of light that vaporize anyone it touches, which happens to several of the guards.
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: Poppy's death in the second chapter comes from a sudden fatal heart attack.
  • No, You: Mae's brief verbal altercation with Jerry of Christ during the fight against Not-Velma:
    Mae: "Game's over, dingus."
    Jerry of Christ: " I'm not a 'dingus'! YOU'RE A DINGUS!"
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: During the Capture the Flag game, Geecku gets pissed at Lehrak, enough to viciously tear into him, showing a huge ferocity that you never see in her.
Geekcu: "Abomination to all life! Geekcu HATE!"
  • Off with His Head!: During the Capture the Flag game, The last thing Geekcu tears off Lehrak's body is his head and Turahk is finished off by his staff falling pointy-end down and taking his head off.
  • Oh, Crap!: Spike says this when he notices Guurahk aiming his staff at him.
    • When Amorey realizes that he’s trying to get Chromedome off him while it's 'Red Light', he goes "Ah, shit" moments before he’s killed by a guard. Marceline goes "Ah, glop" just before she’s killed in the same game.
    • Kurahk's eyes widen in fear as Mungo is hurled at him and Sylvia, moments before they explode.
    • Chromedome shows actual emotion and freaks out when he springs a leak which causes his engines to fail during the Tug of War game with Bridget going "Uh oh" when she realizes that he was pulling them in the back... and is now leaning onto everyone else on her side.
  • One-Winged Angel: When Not-Velma funnels the Prayer Warriors' prayers to their God to herself, she takes that power and transforms into a Cthulhu-like creature, with her upper torso being the only this that still resembles her old self.
  • Overclocking Attack: Mae ultimately kills Not-Velma by giving whatever power remained in Vorahk's staff into Not-Velma, which causes her to explode.
  • Post-Victory Collapse: After barely winning the Tug of War game, Taokaka, Heketa, and Geecku collapse into a pile of exhausted bodies.
    • After Mae defeats Not-Velma, she gives a weak thumbs up before collapsing to her side.
  • Precision F-Strike: When Yang tells Garnet she's got plenty of shit to worry about, Garnet replies that she too has 'shit' to worry about.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: When Mae begins overcharging Not-Velma with energy from Vorahk's staff, having seen it in a movie once, Not-Velma tries to get her to stop since movies have no basis in reality, Mae’s response is "Well, you know what? Reality can EAT! MY! ASS!"
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: The members of the Rakshi, whose red eyes overlooking the first game are the first thing mentioned about them.
  • The Reveal: That it was The Prayer Warriors who created this month's Arena in chapter 5.
  • Riddle for the Ages: As Catra is reflecting on the loss of Marceline in the second break, she wonders how the sun didn't destroy her since she was a vampire. To which Felicia admits that it feels like they skipped over that.
  • Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies: The Tug of War game, which wipes out just over more than half the remaining contestants by that point.
    • The last game before the climax, Glass Bridge, has every other contestant that survived up to that point except for Mae and Not-Velma get killed, either from a guard shooting them or falling into a broken glass plane, with Not-Velma causing a good chunk of those deaths.
  • Running Gag: Moxxie being mistaken for a possum several times by a few contestants.
  • Sex in a Shared Room: Since the remaining contestants can't go anywhere else, they're stuck listening to Heketa eat out Juno's ass during the third break.
  • Shipper on Deck: Luz puts her "shipping goggles on" in chapter 3 when she notices Mae's slight blush over hearing Vorahk's voice.
  • Shout-Out: How Max celebrates after clearing the first game:
    • Max's last words before being annihilated is "That's all, folks!"
    • When Mae goes to talk to Vohrak in chapter 3, Poison hopes she can convince him not to go Terminator on them. And during Mae's conversation with Vohrak, she asks why he hasn’t gone Killbots on the others.
  • Sixth Ranger: Vohrak, who is the only member of the Rahkshi to survive the Capture the Flag game and has to watch the remaining contestants play the games on the sidelines. After the Tug of War game he attempts to help the remaining contestants and then aids Mae in defeating Not-Velma in the last chapter.
  • Skewed Priorities: Just before Mae is about to use a cable to shock Vohrak, she tries to think of a good electricity pun, something that Poppy isn't appreciative about.
  • Sole Survivor: Vohrak is the only member of the Rahkshi to survive the first chapter and the whole story, with Mae as the last remaining contestant of the story.
  • Strolling Through the Chaos: During the Capture the Flag game, as everyone is running to get a flag and trying to avoid getting killed by the Rakshi, Lamby just casually walks to the flags with all the action going on around him.
  • Stylistic Suck: To reference the source material, Jerry of Christ and his Prayer Warriors' speeches are rife with many grammatical errors and typos.
  • Suddenly Significant City: Mae ultimately uses her wish to save Possum Springs by wishing for more opportunities to show up in her town, which she gets by the truckload.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Poppy dies from a random heart attack moments before she was gonna cross the finish line.
  • Take That!: Not-Velma's presence here serves as one to the show Velma for turning Velma into a massively unlikeable person to be around.
  • Taking You with Me: As Sylvia is absorbing Kuhrak's body and staff, it causes an explosion that takes them both out, as well as Mungo who was flung into them.
  • Team Killer: In the Honeycomb game, Not-Velma punches Luz and takes her honeycomb for her own, causing Luz to be eliminated by the guards.
    • In the Tug of War game, several teams have a member placed on opposite sides of the rope, which forces the winning teammates to kill their losing teammates.
  • Tempting Fate: After the remaining contestants formulate a plan on how to escape the Arena, Mae asks what else the guards could throw at them. To which Reggie pleads not to jinx it, with Seth seconding this.
    • Tempting Fate: In the Glass Bridge game, Taokaka isn't scared since cats always land on her feet. She then lasts a few panes before stepping on one that shatters and sends her to her doom.
  • Theme Music Powerup: Just as Mae is about to face off against Not-Velma for the climax, a Metal cover of Night in the Woods' main theme begins playing over their battle.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Every returnee except for Mae ends up getting killed in an Arena once more.
  • Third-Person Person: Contestants Heketa, Taokaka, and Geekcu have this trait.
  • This Cannot Be!: When Vohrak's staff saps Poppy's energy, she exclaims "This...this shouldn't be happening..."
    • Lamby screams this along with a Big "NO!" when Chromedome causes his side in the Tug of War game to fall off the edge.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: When Quill-Weave finds herself teleported to this Arena with no weapons or magic, she admits that she's screwed.
    • When Sylvia sees Mungo being sent flying in her direction as she's absorbing Kurahk, she sighs "Oh, dear" seconds before she, Kurahk, and Mungo explode.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Sylvia for Team 7 and Not-Velma for Team 8, with Not-Velma becoming one for the remaining contestants after the first chapter following Sylvia’s death, to the point of betraying the remaining contestants in chapter five at the worst possible time.
  • Trash the Set: The entire Squid Game Arena gets destroyed by all the fighting between Mae and Not-Velma.
  • Uncertain Doom: Unlike every other Arena villain, Jerry of Christ actually survives to the end of the story, but is trapped under some rubble and none of his Prayer Warriors are alive to help him out.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: After Not-Velma kicks Zoe to the ground and makes it to the end, she celebrates by twerking at the remaining contestants who haven't made it to the finish line yet, which Reggie and Felicia call her out on.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When the announcer introduces the remaining 47 contestants to the members of the Rakshi, Not-Velma dismisses them as "Just some dumb toys from the early 2000s", even after she witnessed one of them turn Barbaros into a pile of goop.
  • Verbal Backspace: Angel Dust’s only line in the first break, which gets eyes placed on him by his remaining teammates:
Angel Dust: "Shame about that Garnet babe. But hey, less competition for me-I mean us, right?"
  • Verbal Tic: Ankha's tic of ending her sentences with "me-meow" gets questioned by Zoe in the last break, to which Ankha replies that it’s just the way she talks, plus Olivia finds it adorable.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: The attitude all the remaining contestants have with Not-Velma over the course of the story as she actively antagonizes anyone she can at every opportunity. In a smaller degree Mae doesn't get along with Lamby at all due to her past experiences with cults.
  • Wham Line: When Mae makes it to the final room of the episode, it becomes all too clear who was the one responsible for bringing everyone to the Arena:
Jerry of Christ: "YOU HAVE COME, YOU SATANIC CANT [sic]! Once this is doned, [sic] you will be exterminated along with the rest of you sitinic [sic] kiiiiind!"
  • Who Needs Their Whole Body?: When Yang bisects Turahk by double-punching him really hard, he somehow survives it and is looking for his staff. Which lasts for a few seconds before his staff comes down and decapitates him.
