Dyes Iwasaki (Left) and TOPHAMHAT-KYO / AO (Right)
Formed in 2013, "FAKE TYPE." is a Japanese Hip-Hop/Rap musical group with some Electro Swing flair, consisting of composer/track-maker DYES IWASAKI and rapper TOPHAMHAT-KYO. They are perhaps best known for their stylish and well-animated music videos, often starring the morally gray Battle Couple of Baron Ham (representing Kyo) and Ms. Iwasake (representing Dyes) as they get caught up in a variety of odd situations at the turn of the 20th century, from hunting monsters to searching for desert treasure.

In 2016, the group announced taking an indefinite hiatus to focus on their respective musical careers. Around 5 years later, they officially re-united with the single "BEELZEBUZ", from which they've been active since. Currently, they've started producing songs for other creators as well, including utaite such as KANKAN and Chougakusei and Virtual YouTubers.

    Music Videos

    Other Work and Collaborations

Tropes applying to the artists and music:

  • Beach Episode: "SEXY SUNSHINE", one of their very few non-animated music videos, has a ton of bright, summery beach imagery. "Tropical Mermaid" also has a lot of ocean and fish imagery in its lyrics.
  • Character Title: The three songs in the Princess series are named after the major character introduced in each song.
  • Cover Version: The duo released a self-cover of "Utakata Lullaby", the song they wrote for Ado in One Piece Film: Red.
  • Creator Thumbprint: Kyo's verse-heavy, wacky raps and Iwasaki's electro-jazz are staples of the FAKE TYPE. formula - even in songs where they're not the ones singing, you can figure out pretty quick who did the writing through the way the lyrics are sung and the track alone.
  • Electro Swing: While not the only genre they've covered, this is their main forte alongside rap.
  • Evil Laugh: Kyo manages to work one into the last rap section of "Princess".
  • Halloween Episode: While more than a few of their songs contain rather spooky themes and imagery, "Witch Hat" is a more proper example.
  • Hidden Track: They have a special bonus track on Kyo's first solo album, only available through the Village Vangard release, called "AKUMA DRIVE".
  • Idiosyncratic Episode Naming: All of their albums follow a "FAKE X" title pattern.
  • Large Ham: One of their musical staples is Kyo's hyperactive, nigh-cartoony Motor Mouth raps and vocals. No wonder he's called TopHAM.
  • Lighter and Softer: "La Primavera" and "At Atelier" have been the most lighthearted of the group's videos, focusing on an artist falling into her spring painting and an animator following her dreams instead. Some of their songs can also be fairly light and cute-sounding compared to their darker and more wild usual fare, such as "HAPPY SUNDAY!!" and "Carry Lucky".
  • Money Song: "GOLDRUSH" has a huge money theme.
  • Motor Mouth: Kyo has a thing for rapping very fast, with some of the best examples being "Nightmare Parade", "FAKE STYLE II" and "Kruel Kreator".
  • Multilingual Song: "MONSTER'S ZOO" is a collaborative song between FAKE TYPE and Swedish band Movits!; as such, the song has both Japanese and Swedish lyrics.
  • Ode to Intoxication: "Bacchus" and "Volstead Bar". "Tropical Mermaid" is this in a more subtle manner, being about a summery cocktail called a "Tropical Mermaid".
  • Ominous Music Box Tune: Featured prominently in "Witch Hat", with some Creepy Children Singing thrown in for good measure.
  • Scatting: Used occasionally in their songs, often courtesy of Iwasaki such as in "Urban Caravan", "Tandemoon Rendezvous" and "Nightmare Parade". Kyo gets a turn as well in "Penny Farthing".
  • Singer-Songwriter: While they mix their talents to create FAKE TYPE., both Dyes and Kyo are familiar with writing and producing their own songs; both had mildly successful solo projects during the group's hiatus.
  • Song of Song Titles: The second verse of "はじまりの背中" (Back’s Beginning) mentions the titles of various FAKE TYPE songs, including "Grimore", "Carry Lucky", "Shu be do be blues", "Blue spring page", "Re;re;refrain", "Urban Caravan", "Junkie's Karte", "BOUNTY HUNTER", and "Witch Hat".
Listen, Grimore didn’t rewrite the world.
Some days are lucky others are Carry Lucky, Shu Be Do Be days
Say goodbye to the unclear days and turn the Spring Blue Page.
Ah ah even apparent to my scatterbrained eyes
Like a Refrain the provoking Caravan's voiceless voices repeat
The feeling of losing sight of a destination sure is tough.
If you still have passion, send us your cheer
    Wasn’t accepting it Junkie's Karte
I know already, if there's no sound I can’t express myself.
''We're not proper bounty hunters, nor witches that can save your heart.
  • Surprisingly Gentle Song: "Tsuki", "Dandelion" and "Oblivion" from the albums tend to be this compared to the manic energy of the rest of their discography, with the first two being ballads and the third being a relaxing outro track.
  • Take That!: "BEELZEBUZ" and "BARBER SHOP" both harshly criticize the toxicity of modern social media, with "BEELZEBUZ" being about people dogpiling others online for petty or selfish reasons, while "BARBER SHOP" criticizes how people can use the Internet to exaggerate stories or others' actions in malicious or self-aggrandizing ways.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: "BEELZEBUZ" is a massive Take That! directed towards people who abuse social media and act toxic on them, culminating with this scathing verse timed in the MV with Ms. Iwasake dishing out a Curb-Stomp Battle to the fly god:
    They come flocking, noisy flies
    Basically your photo and words
Are not any different from human waste
Be aware of that, Beelzebuzzy fucker!
  • Title Track: "FAKE STYLE II" for the FAKE STYLE II mini-album, "Tsuki" for the Tsuki EP and "FAKE LAND" for FAKE LAND.

Tropes applying to the music videos and characters:

  • Acrofatic: Despite his round appearance, Baron Ham is able to swiftly battle with a sword and take down flies with a giant swatter.
  • The Alcoholic: Ms. Iwasake is usually shown with or around wine, drinking heavily in "FAKE STYLE", holding a glass while lounging around in "FAKE STYLE II", having a few bottles placed around her DJ table in "Urban Caravan", etc. Her counterpart in "Witch Hat" also has numerous bottles and an empty shot glass next to her chair. She's also shown juggling some alcohol bottles in the "CR ANTHEM" collab video.
  • All Just a Dream: The end of "Deep Sea Swing" pans up to a ship before abruptly cutting to the human Baron Ham opening his eyes, revealing the events of the rest of the video were just a dream he had while knocked unconscious.
  • Alpha Bitch: The Princess from "Princess♂" is an Alpha Bitch who makes every man fall in love with her while ruining friendships.
  • Ambiguous Gender: The titular Princess from "Princess♂", "Mister Jewel Box" and "Kruel Kreator" looks very girly and has a visible bust/cleavage in some scenes. However, Princess also looks flat in others and the male symbol in the music video's title further confuses people. The music video's animator DEMONDICE clarified things in a tweet: Kyo considers Princess female, but lets viewers interpret her however they want.
  • Ambiguous Time Period: In the FAKE ANIME BOOK, the plot for "FAKE STYLE" says the story takes place in the 1900's, with no specific year in the 1900's stated. In later music videos like "BEELZEBUZ", there are more modern features such as touchscreen phones.
  • Amusement Park of Doom: The "FAKE LAND" video is set in an amusement park of the same name, and features such things as raining swords, actual ghosts, swinging axes, and hung skeletons. One of the lyrics also mentions shooting the patrons, who are children, if they don't scream.
  • An Aesop: The video for "Knickknack Kingdom" is a cautionary tale against greed and pride. The main character, a lowly street merchant, peddles miscellaneous knickknacks until she happens upon an enchanted record that summons a genie that grants her the power to know the exact value of any given object. The merchant uses her newfound power to strike it rich, but also grows increasingly greedy and conceited, undermining her friendship with the genie, who retracts his blessing and vanishes. Having lost her ability to tell the value of an object, she ends up in jail after offering a princess a gift that offends her, then goes right back on the streets, worse off then when she started.
  • Animated Music Video: All of the band's music videos are animated, with the animation usually done by animation trio PPP.
  • Art Imitates Art: "La Primavera" both as a song and music video, are based on the painting Primavera by Sandro Botticelli. The song and music video highlight the same gods and goddesses that appear in the painting.
  • Art Initiates Life: The music video for "Mister Jewel Box" is inspired by the massive popularity of the "Princess♂" song and character from Topham's previous album, and depicts a creation becoming more well-known and "real" than their actual creator. Its sequel song "Kruel Kreator" shows the creation having now dominated the life of its creator, to the point where the creator feels the best thing to do is to kill it off for the sake of his sanity.
  • Art Shift: In comparison to the chibi and cartoonish style of the rest of the music videos, "Beauty Unique Boutique" is more detailed and has realistic proportions for the characters.
  • Ate It All: In "Yummy Yummy Yummy", Hammy and Sakie manage to eat the food supply of entire restaurants when the point of restaurants are to serve as many people as possible.
  • Author Avatar: While most of the duo characters can count on some level, Mister Jewel Box is an exaggerated representation of Kyo and is usually featured as his avatar on his YouTube channel aside from his appearances in songs. Meanwhile, the Kruel Kreator is this for DEMONDICE, the creator of the MVs for the Princess♂ series.
  • Babies Ever After: The end of the "FAKE STYLE II" video show Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake holding a pair of swaddled infants with their hair colors.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: "Mister Jewel Box" and "Kruel Kreator" both end with Mister Jewel Box failing to rescue his career from the hands of Princess and the Kruel Kreator, ending up as Princess's lackey in the former and getting his brain removed in the latter.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: In "Mister Jewel Box", when the titular artist's creation starts taking control, the lyrics include "Been chasing this dream, but now it's chasing me" and "Being killed by my own creation, for artists, that's our dream".
  • Bilingual Bonus:
    • "La Primavera" is "the Spring" in Italian, referencing the song and the music video's heavy focus on flowers.
    • "At Atelier" Is "the workshop" in Dutch, alluding to the main character's journey of becoming an animator.
  • Bounty Hunter: Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake spend "FAKE STYLE", hunting various people on wanted posters, said posters opening and closing the video. "FAKE STYLE II" upgrades them to Hunter of Monsters, getting a call to kill two beasts on Monster Island.
  • Brain in a Jar: At the end of "Kruel Kreator", Mister Jewel Box is reduced to a brain in a green vat resembling Kyo's logo, as punishment for trying to kill Princess.
  • Caged Bird Metaphor: Both the video and lyrics for "Tsuki" relate to the feeling of being trapped and the negative feelings that come with it, with Ms. Iwasake even appearing in a bird cage at one point in the video.
Like a bird in a cage feeling like you're suffocating to death
  • The Cameo:
    • The guitarist, monk, and horse from "Urban Caravan" make a brief appearance at the beginning of "At Atelier" while the artist is watching TV.
    • The same guitarist and monk from "Urban Caravan" additionally appear together as buyers in the flee market in the music video for "Knickknack Kingdom".
    • The same guitarist from "Urban Caravan" appears in "真FAKE STYLE" as the bartender.
    • The butcher and his apprentice from "Yummy Yummy Yummy" briefly appear in "Kruel Kreator" when Mister Jewel Box buys a cleaver from them with the intent to kill his creation...funnily enough, right when the lyrics are about how there's "only one" of himself.
    • Confirmed in concept art for "Deep Sea Swing"'s music video, multiple sea creatures seen alongside Baron Ham and Iwasake are cameos for past characters and content creators: Hammy and Sakie are seahorses, PPP are a sea angel, dumbo octopus, and sea cucumber, and DEMONDICE is a manta ray.
  • Canon Character All Along:
    • The end of the "FAKE LAND" video reveals that the elephant and lion mascot suits were being worn by Hammy and Sakie from "Yummy Yummy Yummy", who might also be Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasaki's children first seen at the end of "FAKE STYLE II".
    • A variant: inspired by the FAKE TYPE. videos, the artist in "At Atelier" creates characters based off Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake, that being a living camera and palette: in the final chorus segment, the witch uses her magic to actually turn them into Ham and Iwasake.
    • At the end of the music video for "Kruel Kreator", Mister Jewel Box's brain is removed and ends up becoming Kyo’s own logo (a blue brain with wild eyes, stick arms and a top hat). Additionally, the titular Kreator is actually the fan artist from "Mister Jewel Box", who also turns out to represent DEMONDICE.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: When his mouth is shown in music videos and official art, Baron Ham is usually depicted with a large cheeky smile, which depending on the video is shorthand for either playful trickery or malicious intent. Occasionally, Iwasake can be seen showing a similar grin as well, for the same purposes as Ham.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The seemingly innocuous fan artist who drew Princess in "Mister Jewel Box" returns in "Kruel Kreator", and is revealed to be a representation of DEMONDICE with the power to bend reality via drawing.
  • Clothing-Concealed Injury: The music video for "真FAKE STYLE" reveals that Baron Ham wears a monocle in "FAKE STYLE II" due to an unspecific eye injury that scarred his left eye.
  • Color-Coded Characters: Baron Ham is depicted as mainly blue, while Iwasake is depicted as mostly pink. The notable exception is their eyes, which are their partner's color. Hammy and Sakie share the same colors, albeit swapped.
  • Concept Art Gallery: FAKE ANIME BOOK, released in 2016, is an art book that contains concept art for designs as well as animation frames used in various music videos, such as "FAKE STYLE", "Urban Caravan", and "La Primavera".
  • Conspicuous Trenchcoat: In "真FAKE STYLE" , Baron Ham's dopplegänger wears a long trenchcoat and fedora, with the trenchcoat hiding the fact that he is just a child wearing stilts.
  • Creator Backlash: An In-Universe example. In "Mister Jewel Box", Princess' creator and the titular character starts to hate her once her popularity begins to overshadow his own and she begins to assert dominance over him. In "Kruel Kreator", this escalates to the point of him making multiple attempts on her life.
  • Creator Cameo:
    • The apprentice butcher in "Yummy Yummy Yummy" and "Kruel Kreator" bears a striking resemblance to the real-life Kyo.
    • In the background of some parts of "FAKE LAND", there are photos of the real Dyes and Kyo somewhat obscured by the word "SHOWTIME!" and a rather large fly.
    • In "At Atelier", a cartoonish depiction of Dyes and Kyo is on a poster in the aspiring animator's room.
    • In "Managarmr", zombies depicting Dyes and Kyo appear in the back of the crowd of zombies seen in the chorus.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Princess is an adorable, attractive demon girl with wide hips, a snazzy fashion sense, and the uncanny ability to make men fall head over heels in love with her.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: In the "Urban Caravan" video, Ham befriends both a Mexican guitarist and a young Chinese monk by winning musical duels against them.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind:
    • The deadly flower disease and the massacre between Witch Sake and the townsfolk in "Witch Hat" is revealed to have been plotted by the animal mascots, who celebrate at the graveyard once Mayor Ham keels over.
    • It's revealed at the end of "Kruel Kreator" that the real source of Princess’s explosion in popularity and Mister Jewel Box’s subsequent grief was an artist the latter met at a fan meet, who gave Princess her appearance to begin with.
  • Downer Ending: "Witch Hat" ends with everyone dead, Mayor Ham only getting moments to realize he made a terrible mistake as the virus overtakes him after Witch Sake's death. Lampshaded by the lyrics.
Suddenly a game changer, an ending no one wanted
  • Early Instalment Weirdness: The first music video, "FAKE STYLE", depicts Baron Ham with flat teeth. Nearly every video after this, including "FAKE STYLE II", would go on to depict him with sharp teeth.
  • Ear Fins: Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake's merforms in "Deep Sea Swing" have fins where their ears should be, with Ham's being short and stubby and Iwasake's being longer and more ribbon-like.
  • Evil Counterpart: The MV for "真FAKE STYLE" features Baron Ham and Iwasake battling their evil Doppelgängers who have caused the town to live in fear from the havoc the imposters caused.
  • Face Framed in Shadow: After Baron Ham injured his eye, but before he gains his monocle in "真FAKE STYLE", the right side of his face is covered in a large black shadow to obscure said injured eye.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The video for "Urban Caravan" ends with the team going to dig up more treasure, passing by a sign covered by Mochi-kun. Mochi-kun then falls off the sign, revealing it to be a landmine warning. Boom.
  • Four Is Death: At the end of "BEELZEBUZ", the video uploaded of one of the King of Flies' minions getting swatted has 4.4k likes and 444 dislikes, referencing how this kind of negativity lead to the rise of the King of Flies in the first place.
  • Garden of Love: The drawing world in "La Primavera" is a giant garden, and the place in which Zephyr and Flora fall in love. Additionally, Baron Ham and Miss Iwasake have romantic intentions in this music video, such as Miss Iwasake moving closer to Baron Ham during the scene between Zephyr and Flora.
  • Gluttony Montage: The "Yummy Yummy Yummy" PV is one of these, with Hammy and Sakie's hunger not only driving various chefs to ruin, but also leading to the mass slaughter of animals, and in the case of mammoths, their extinction.
  • Greed: The fatal flaw of "Mister Jewel Box", who capitalizes on his creation's popularity until it surpasses his own and starts to dominate his life.
  • Here We Go Again!: "BEELZEBUZ" ends with the townsfolk, who had just been saved from the King of Flies after their negativity on social media empowered it, uploading a video of two people swatting one of its minions onto social media. Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake just shrug when they watch it.
  • Humanoid Abomination:
    • Baron Ham appears to be the deadlier one in "FAKE STYLE" until Ms. Iwasake drinks a tad too much wine, flips upside-down, and turns into a black whirling dervish that telekinetically destroys an entire ballroom. In the sequel, she slashes monsters apart with her bare hands without needing to transform. In "真FAKE STYLE", she gains the ability to manifest the form via her shadow.
    • Iwasake's doppelgänger in "真FAKE STYLE" is humanoid in appearance, but has a gear-like mouth, and her movements during the instrumental break show her body turning into fire. After being bested, she melts into a puddle.
  • Immediate Sequel: "真FAKE STYLE" picks up with Baron Ham and Miss Iwasake captured by pirates from the end of "Deep Sea Swing". They instantly break free, destroy the ship, and make their way back to land, setting up the actual plot for the video.
  • Interquel: Despite also being confirmed as a sequel of "FAKE STYLE" by PPP, "真FAKE STYLE" is set between "FAKE STYLE" and "FAKE STYLE II", and explains why Baron Ham wears a monocle and how he got his new sword, which has an animal's skull as the base.
  • I Kiss Your Hand: The cover to the Tsuki EP has Baron Ham kissing Miss Iwasake's hand.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: No matter what enemy Miss Iwasake is up against, she always appears wearing a fancy dress while doing so.
  • Later-Installment Weirdness: The music videos made before FAKE TYPE's separation had varying heights for Baron Ham and Miss Iwasake, but usually showed them around the same height, with Ham sometimes being a little taller. Every video after FAKE TYPE's reunion firmly depicts Iwasake as being One Head Taller than Ham.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Compared to Ms. Iwasake, Baron Ham is always portrayed as wearing the same suit, with minor variations to his outfit. Following FAKE TYPE.'s reunion, music videos would go on to portray Ham with a greater variety of outfits, albeit most still resembling a suit.
  • Love Goddess: Venus, the goddess of love, appears in "La Primavera", presiding over the drawing world.
  • Man-Eating Plant: In "BEELZEBUZ", the King of Flies is killed when Ms. Iwasake's lower half turns into a Venus Flytrap, which grows gigantic and devours it whole.
  • Mascot: FAKE-chan, a small robotic-looking Cartoon Creature with bullseye-like eyes, and Mochi-kun, a small octopus-like creature with similar bullseye-like eyes, who appear in both the band's logo and on the covers of each of their albums. The two also get cameos in various music videos such as "Urban Caravan", "BEELZEBUZ", "Yummy Yummy Yummy", and "At Atelier".
  • More Deadly Than the Male: In most of the videos that depict Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake in battle, the former is usually Badass Normal with a Sword Cane, while the latter rarely fights, but is a Humanoid Abomination when she does. In both "FAKE STYLE" and "Witch Hat" she turns into a Living Shadow capable of dishing out a Curb-Stomp Battle to many enemies at once, while in "BEELZEBUZ" she turns into a giant Man-Eating Plant with Combat Tentacles and, inexplicably, energy swords. Subverted in "FAKE STYLE II", where both fight on equal footing and Ms. Iwasake does not transform, though that doesn't stop her from tearing enemies apart with her bare hands.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: The King of Flies in the "BEELZEBUZ" PV appears to be a 3D model, contrasting the 2D style of the rest of the world.
  • Ominous Cube: A strange cube appears in both the cover art and music video for "FAKE LAND", mostly in possession of Baron Ham. It is suggested to be a pandora's box of sorts, however this idea not built upon further and it's purpose is still unknown.
  • Pictorial Letter Substitution:
    • The band's usual logo has the A in "FAKE" replaced by FAKE-chan, one of the band's mascots, while the Y in "TYPE" is drawn like a radio tower, complete with signal.
    • On the FAKE BOX album, in addition to the FAKE-chan A and radio tower Y, the O in "BOX" is drawn with swirls inside it.
    • The FAKE JAZZ album replaces the two Zs with high heels, and Mochi-kun, one of the band's mascots, is sitting on top of the second high heel.
    • The in-video logo for the "FAKE LAND" music video has the hole in the first A replaced with a grin, while the hole in the second A is an eye.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy:
    • The main protagonists of FAKE TYPE's videos are Baron Ham, associated with blue, and Miss Iwasake, associated with pink, which is reflected in a majority of their outfits.
    • Gender-inverted: of the twins, Hammy is completely blue while Sakie is completely pink, down to their skin tones.
  • Price on Their Head:
    • Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake end up with huge bounties on their heads at the end of "FAKE STYLE", after killing all the mafioso with their own bounties. Their worth is over 400 times larger by the start of "FAKE STYLE II", with a posted bounty of "999,999,999...".
    • Hammy and Sakie from "Yummy Yummy Yummy" also get bounties due to their rampant gluttony knocking out various chefs and ruining their businesses.
  • "Ray of Hope" Ending: In the end of "Knickknack Kingdom", Zeney is thrown back out onto the streets after being released from prison, left with nothing except the clothes on her back. However, Baron Ham and Iwasake appear and give her a gold coin to help her get back on her feet. It's also implied that the two may have bailed her out, as they can be seen watching in the corridor during the prison scene.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Inverted: of the lovely Battle Couple, Ham is clothed in blue, yet is the boisterous, cocksure one, while the pink Iwasake is more reserved and content on letting Ham lead the way in their escapades.
  • Rewatch Bonus: In "Kruel Kreator", Mister Jewel Box hires two women, a sniper and a witch respectively, to kill Princess. Both fail, with Princess effortlessly dodging the sniper's bullets and taming the monster the witch summons. Those rewatching the video will notice the two women share the same haircut and color as the eponymous Kruel Kreator, implying that they're all the same woman and that she deliberately sabotaged Jewel Box's attempts on Princess's life.
  • Sanity Slippage: Mister Jewel Box progressively loses his sanity as Princess' career overshadows his, symbolized by the jewels in his head disappearing and being replaced by frowning spirits. By the time of "Kruel Kreator", he's outright trying to kill her.
  • Sequel Episode:
    • "FAKE STYLE II" is a sequel to "FAKE STYLE", where Ham and Iwasake are now much older but are still very capable, rich from their bounty hunting and called to deal with some monsters on Monster Island.
    • "At Atelier" acts as a sort of sequel to "La Primavera", having a similar theme of artistry and the same light, jaunty vibe, and the titles of both are two words taken from another language. The accompanying music video furthers the parallels with the "La Primavera" music video, featuring the cherubs from that video, a recreation of Ms. Iwasake falling into La Primavera with "At Atelier"'s protagonist, and Ham and Iwasake leaving through the same sakura archway shown in "La Primavera". In addition, rather than link to the previous music video for "FAKE LAND", the title card at the end of the video instead links to the music video for "La Primavera".
    • "Mister Jewel Box" and "Kruel Kreator" are sequels to "Princess♂", dealing with their beleaguered creator’s reaction to their popularity.
  • Shapeshifting Seducer: As stated by DEMONDICE during a livestream showing the making of "Kruel Kreator", Princess can change their form at will in order to attract different types of people by fulfilling their desires.
  • Shout-Out: To Thomas & Friends, of all things. The stage name of TOPHAMHAT-KYO obviously alludes to Sir Topham Hatt, also known as the Fat Controller, and his Author Avatar Baron Ham, seen in many of their videos, bears a striking resemblance to the same character. Thomas himself also makes some appearances in their videos, particularly the one for "Princess♂".
    • "CRAZY ARTS" features Baron Ham and Iwasake as Bomberman protagonists.
  • Show Within a Show:
    • In "BEELZEBUZ", thumbnails for FAKE TYPE's past music videos can be seen in-universe when people are using social media.
    • The "At Atelier" video is about a fictional person watching past FAKE TYPE animations and becoming an aspiring animator; they even have figurines of Hammy and Sakie and a poster of DYES and KYO in their room.
  • Smooch of Victory: A mutual victory rather than a rescue, after Baron ham and Ms. Iwasake defeat the dragon and vampire during "FAKE STYLE 2", Iwasake gives him a kiss on the cheek.
  • Social Media Is Bad: The "BEELZEBUZ" PV has the eponymous King of Flies gain power by having its minions deliver mobile phones to people and feeding on the ensuing toxicity.
  • Stealth Pun: "Deep Sea Swing" features a heavy use of fish hooks, and the very end of the video ends with Ham and Iwasake captured by pirates — a Sequel Hook, if you will.
  • Sword Cane: Baron Ham's depiction in "FAKE STYLE", "FAKE STYLE II" and "真FAKE STYLE" uses a sword cane to cut down gangsters and ghosts.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: In the "BEELZEBUZ" MV, the titular fly demon gives one last pleading look to the audience just before disappearing into Ms. Iwasaki's gigantic Venus Flytrap jaws.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: While their height depictions range from each artist and music video, Baron Ham is occasionally drawn shorter than Miss Iwasake. This is mainly relevant in "BEELZEBUZ", but can also be seen in promotional art.
  • Training Montage: Shown in "真FAKE STYLE", Baron Ham and Iwasake go through rigorous training in preparation of fighting their Doppelgängers. While Baron Ham mainly partakes in standard Martial Arts training, Iwasake trains through the art of wine making.
  • Universal-Adaptor Cast: Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake take on a number of roles throughout the music videos, such as being partners in "FAKE STYLE", enemies in "Witch Hat", and exterminators in "BEELZEBUZ". The animal mascots of music video artists Rojiko, Buki, and Norainu also make frequent appearances changed to fit the contexts.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Ms. Iwasake has a new outfit for each music video.
  • Useless Accessory:
    • Baron Ham wears a snorkel in "Deep Sea Swing", despite being both leagues under the sea and already capable of breathing underwater due to being a merman.
    • "真FAKE STYLE" reveals that the monocle Baron Ham wears in "FAKE STYLE II" is merely for show, as it covers his scarred eye.
  • "Wanted!" Poster:
    • The "FAKE STYLE" videos depict Baron Ham and Ms. Iwasake hunting down various bounties marked on posters before getting their own.
    • The "Yummy Yummy Yummy" video ends with Hammy and Sakie getting a pair of their own after all the damage they caused...which they promptly devour in one bite.
    • The music video for "真FAKE STYLE" features a board featuring multiple wanted posters for PPP, The pirates from "Deep Sea Swing", The King of Flies from "BEELZEBUZ", and the FAKE TYPE Dopplegangers. Baron Ham and Iwasake also receive their own posters on said board at the end of the MV.
  • Wine Is Classy: In both "FAKE STYLE" videos, Ms. Iwasaki is rich and elegant and enjoys her red wine a lot. Somewhat less classily, her Wanted poster in FAKE STYLE II shows her drinking some straight from the bottle.
  • Witch Hunt: The video for "Witch Hat" centers on Mayor Ham rallying the townsfolk against Witch Sake when deadly black flowers start sprouting from people's faces - the Witch is actually trying to cure the disease, but Ham and the townsfolk are too blinded to realize it, and in the ensuing fight only Mayor Ham is left standing. Mayor Ham buries the bodies and mourns the losses, only for the flowers to start blooming from his face, learning too late the Witch wasn't responsible.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Baron Ham's cane sword is broken into pieces after his and Iwasake's first clash with their dopplegangers: as Ham and Iwasake usually clean sweep their opponents, this sends a very clear message as to just how powerful their counterparts are.
