Character-Specific Memes
- Alear:
- Toothpaste-chan ExplanationWhen Alear's design was revealed, it didn't take long for people to start making fun of their dual-tone red and blue hair, likening it to the packaging of various toothpaste brands.
- The Crest is to blame! ExplanationWith all the toothpaste memes, the mention of the brand Crest was inevitable. And with the mention of Crest comes Edelgard declaring "the Crests are to blame!", and Edelgard was already memetically associated with a distaste for Crest toothpaste since her debut game. Many jokes were made about how Edelgard would somehow become a villain in the game due to this. This meme in particular became more amusing when the Expansion Pass' first wave includes the Three Houses Lords as Emblems, though it was discredited when they are given to you and stay with you throughout the game, even after Chapter 10/11.
- Colgate ExplanationAs an alternative to Crest brand toothpaste, and because Colgate brand also uses the same red and blue color scheme on its marketing.
- Pepsiman/Pepsi-chanExplanationSimilar to the toothpaste nicknames, with Alear having a similar color scheme to Pepsi's Japanese mascot who himself is a Fountain of Memes
- Alear is a Vtuber. ExplanationAlear's designs made some think of Vtuber models due to the over the top coloring and design choices that wouldn't be out of place as one. Funnily enough, the artist for the game, Mika Pikazo, has done work for Vtubers, most notably for hololive and Kaguya Luna.
- Alear is the bastard child of Sigurd and ArvisExplanationMany Fire Emblem fans (particularly Genealogy of the Holy War fans) noted that Alear's hair colors resembles both Sigurd's hair and Arvis' hair. Jokes then ran through the fandom that Arvis and Sigurd had Alear together, despite what happened in Genealogy of the Holy War.
- Similar jokes were spawned that claims Alear is the child of Lucina and Spider-Man, a Crossover Ship that gained a large amount of infamy on the internet, due to also having the red/blue color scheme, with the red representing Spider-Man, and the blue and female Alear's long hair representing Lucina.
- Sei Shonagon is the best lordExplanationMika Pikazo is also the designer of Sei Shonagon from Fate/Grand Order, who also sports dual-toned blue and red hair similar to Alear.
- Alear becomes evil◊note In the opening of the game, there is a point where Alear briefly swaps into their evil selves with a Slasher Smile/Psychotic Smirk before switching into a scene where Alfred, Diamant, Timerra, Ivy, and the Alear of the opposite gender are fighting the corrupted. When the English version of the opening was revealed, the female version of that scene quickly became memetic for the unusually gremlin-like look on her face, as well as the hilarious transition when "Emblem... ENGAGE!" was uttered in the opening theme once she turns evil.
- NIGERUNDAYO, VANDER!!!ExplanationThe very first encounter against the Corrupted has Alear make an utterly hilarious Bait-and-Switch by choosing to run instead of fight, and Vander's reaction only adds to the sheer hilarity.
- You are my pet now.ExplanationAlear can find animals after battles and take them back to the Somniel. On top of jokes about Alear being an animal hoarder, this can include taking domestic dogs and cats from villages, giving the impression that Alear is going around stealing peoples' pets.
- Two Kamen Rider comparisons spawned memes, the first being the premise similarity to that of Kamen Rider Zi-Onote In which both use devices that call on the powers of previous protagonists that even change the user's appearance to assimilate to them, the second is comparing Alear's appearance to that of Kamen Rider Build.
- Joycon hairExplanationAlear's dual-toned red and blue hair bears a strong similarity to the standard colors of the Switch's joycons. Players began joking that Alear's hair color would change according to the color of the player's joycons (pink/green, purple/orange, all grey), with an additional joke of the all grey color becoming the most desirable color to get rid of their unusual hair color.
- No, that is stupid.Explanation (spoilers)The Alear of the past who served Sombron has a habit of bluntly announcing their emotions, emphasizing how much of a developmentally-stunted Empty Shell they were. This line of theirs instantly became an exploitable reaction.
- Vander:
- 45 years old.ExplanationThe usual Jagen of the game, Vander, is a mere 45 years old according to internal data, spawning quite a few jokes about his supposed 'old' age. The same applies to Saphir, to a lesser extent, at 35— and wrinkled.
- Framme:
- "Ahhh! Divine One, you look so shiny when you sweat~!" Wait, what the FUCK?! At the very start of her C-Support with Alear, she utters this very... interesting line while watching them train. Many people started to view her as a massive weirdo who tends to love Alear a little bit too much, leading some people to start jokingly and seriously saying she'd probably lick the Divine Dragon's sweat off of their feet.
- Alear: (does literally anything) Clanne and Framme: THE DIVINE DRAGON IS SO AWESOME!!!Explanation During supports, gameplay, and the story, Clanne and Framme, the 33rd Stewards of the Divine Dragon, worship the ground Alear walks on with a fevor that seems almost fanatical, and even start a fan club for them, with Framme arguably being the bigger Fangirl of the twins.
- Alfred:
- Alfred and muscles Explanation (spoilers!)Alfred's love for muscles had quickly gotten notoriety before release due to the fact that the Firenese prince continuously boasts about muscles in the English version of the game, and even gets excited about his own muscles, despite his evident scrawniness. Unfortunately, it no longer becomes funny when the fact that Alfred is Secretly Dying from a chronic illness is taken into account.
- Evil Alfred / Why is Alfred drawn like this?◊ ExplanationAlfred's official art was mocked by fans for looking as if he's a villain, which funnily enough has nothing to do with his disciplined and happy-go-lucky personality. Became Hilarious in Hindsight, as Wave 4 of the DLC reveals an evil counterpart of Alfred.
- Etie:
- Boucheron:
- Boucheron's small head ExplanationBoucheron's overall design makes his head look a bit too small for his body. Fans were quick to make edits of his portrait and shrink his head even further.
- Céline:
- Jean:
- "WHY ME?!"ExplanationOne of Jean's voice clips whenever he is attacked. This voice clip had garnered notoriety online as a result of various gameplay footage consisting of the poor kid getting beaten up by a lot of people and Emblems in the Arena.
- Alcryst:
- All-critsExplanationAlcryst has access to Luna and a decently high crit rate, which makes him rather useful in combat.
- Yunaka:
- Almost ANYTHING about Yunaka, whether it be her quirky and memorable dialogue or undisputed usefulness as a unit has become memetic. So much that even she herself IS a meme!
- Screenshots of Yunaka paired with various sentences, most notably biblical statements, were widespread as shitposts around the time the game was launched, and still are. Such images are also used as reaction memes.
- Nothing is true. Everything is permitted. Explanation (character spoiler)When Yunaka's past reveals her as an assassin and she is one of the best playable characters in Engage, fans love to have her being a member of the Elyos' Assassins Order. Her playing style and having Corrin as her Emblem partner even factors into this role.
- Impressionist Yunaka. ExplanationYunaka happens to also be a great impressionist ranging from Emblems Micaiah and Corrin to Princess Ivy as revealed in her support of Seadall. Additionally, she mimics Zelkov's Verbal Tic in their support. This has not gone unnoticed when compared with the last time impressions were used in a Fire Emblem game.
- Zappy! / Hiya Papaya!ExplanationTwo of Yunaka's catchphrases, which quickly took off as a joke.
- Ivy:
- "I love you." ExplanationIvy's B-Support with Alear brings us this line, where she reveals she worships the Divine Dragon. The quote has garnered popularity for how silly and unexpected it is, which led to similar jokes or memes being made, such as comparing Ivy to Patrick Star (who also said "I love you" in an incredibly silly way in one episode).
- Cringefail wifeExplanationDue to Ivy's first impression as a commanding and intimidating villainous princess being turned on its head when more about her character is revealed, in which notable characteristics include being fearful of ghosts (the most, out of the whole army), her devotion to the Divine Dragon as initial means to rebel against her family, and having little to no social graces, Ivy has been given this endearing label by players that immediately sought to S-Support her because of the aforementioned quirks.
- The Ivy everyone expectedExplanationIn stark contrast to the above, the Fell Xenologue version of Ivy was revealed to be an absolutely monstrous woman befitting of that first impression, leading to a number of players referring to her as this.
- Zelkov:
- Is there someone you *forgot?*ExplanationThe combination of map design and Zelkov's more muted colour scheme make him look like he has already been used in the Player Phase, resulting in players scratching their heads over why the Enemy Phase hasn't started.
- Speech *emphasis*ExplanationA lot of Zelkov's dialogue is memeable due to how much he *emphasizes* his words *like this*, to the point that some characters think he's insinuating a *deeper* meaning, but that's just how he *talks*. If you'd like to see how it *goes*, feel free to view the link *here*.It's even *leaked* into this *very* site too.
- "There is nothing quite so *isolating* as pain"ExplanationZelkov's B-support with Ivy became infamous for how it begins, with Zelkov making a massive philosophical speech with a starry night sky as his backdrop... only to cut back to a confused Ivy and Zelkov explaining that it was about headache medicine.
- Kagetsu:
- "Quiz me!"ExplanationIn Kagetsu's B Support with Boucheron, Kagetsu invites the latter to "quiz" him - as it turns out, Kagetsu was teasingly asking for a kiss, but Boucheron took it literally. This conversation quickly became popular with the fans, with some people using it to (jokingly or not) prove how queer-coded the game is.
- Hortensia:
- "Peak Fiction"ExplanationBefore the game came out, there was plenty of concerns about the quality of the game, particularly its story. This led to people joking about how the game was going to be "peak fiction", citing Hortensia's silly design and the game's main theme as reasons and comparing the game to Morbius. Humorously, Hortensia grew a sizable following after more of her supports were discovered.
- Rosado:
- Rosado's gender/Rosado destroys gender. ExplanationRosado has earned himself quite a fanbase, particularly within LGBT+ people, for being a gender non-conforming man. The game in general treats him with respect as much as the rest of the female characters, as he's set to wear feminine clothing in the boutique, and his appearance was not used for shock value, which the kind of joke has worn out its welcome throughout the 21st century. It has become a common joke that Rosado has destroyed the concept of gender.
- Panette:
- Goth AnnetteExplanationThe reveal of Pannette and her class immediately drew comparisons to Annette from Three Houses, both of them being orange-haired girls who wield axes and have similar sounding names.
- Merrin:
- Merrin is a furry.ExplanationMerrin’s Adorkable nature, Wolf Knight class and ecstatic reaction to becoming a dragon when Engaging with Tiki have led to many fans considering her a member of the Furry Fandom, jokingly or otherwise.
- Seadall:
- The Yassification of NavarreExplanationSeadall bears a good resemblance to Navarre from the Archanea games, and with Seadall being a dancer, many fans joked about how Navarre underwent "yassification"
- Griss:
- Griss pointing and laughing/When my friend makes a funny jokeExplanation (MAJOR SPOILERS)A clip of Griss laughing hysterically at Alear once he finds out that their father is Sombron took off as a reaction video, usually to represent the poster laughing at something i.e. a meme.
- Sombron:
- The Fell ChadExplanationWhile it wasn't apparent when he was first shown in the trailers, Sombron's human form turned out to be surprisingly ripped◊.
- Once there was an Ugly Fell Dragon. He was so ugly that everyone died. The end. note That didn't help at all! Explanation (Spoilers) The Fell Xenolouge DLC takes place in an alternate reality where Sombron wins, and he uses his victory to kill every single playable character in the base game. A villain who kills everyone is almost automatically guaranteed to spawn more than a few SpongeBob jokes.
- Sommie:
- All hail Sommie!ExplanationThe reveal of the utterly adorable Sommie was received with squees of delight, even managing to win over several detractors of the game through its sheer cuteness. Many fans happily admitted they'd be buying the game solely for Sommie.
- The Sommie suit◊. ExplanationIn the second wave of DLC, a full-body costume of Sommie was added to the game, which completely took off almost the instant it was revealed. From people clothing everyone in it◊ to jokes like finding Alear wearing it during a wake-up event, to just the sheer absurdity of there being essentially a Sommie fursuit in a game about a Fell Dragon trying to devour the world, the fandom isn't sure what to make of it, but they're enjoying the absurdity of it all the same.
- Edible Sommie poopExplanationThe announcement of bond fragment-themed konpeito generated this reaction from fans due to an implication that with the fragments being edible, it is now possible to eat Sommie's shit.
- Emblems:
- Red Marth/Evil Marth ExplanationThe second trailer features a scene where Marth turns red as he is controlled by the enemy. This moment immediately became memetic, as jokes ranging from Marth switching from the player to enemy side like some characters in the series to his color switch reflecting his Memetic Psychopath status in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon quickly took off shortly afterwards.
- "You simp..."◊ ExplanationOne of the quotes Leif says in The Somniel is actually "You simply must rest. One cannot enter battle if they are fatigued, after all." However, the way that the dialogue was cut off before talking to him led people to joke that he was judging Alear for doing something, such as giving Chloé his ring.
- "I don't recall asking for your advice." ExplanationSoren's incredibly blunt rejection of Rosado's suggestion for him to "loosen up" in their Bond conversations quickly became a hit in the fandom due to how it perfectly encapsulates Soren's character.
- Salty VeronicaExplanationRight around when the DLC that added Veronica into Engage came out, the same Legendary alt was in the final round of the then current "A Hero Rises" Voting Gauntlet, the winner of which would be given to every Heroes player for free. She ended up not winning the final round. This resulted in people joking that the reason for her characterization being more akin to how she was in Book I of Heroes is her being salty at her loss and taking it out on Alear and company.
- 3-Star Wrys ExplanationWhen the DLC Emblem Veronica was announced, the trailer show her Engage Attack invoking Heroes' gacha mechanics, which led to a lot of jokes about wasting your Engage turns pulling 3-star Wrys, or other Memetic Loser Heroes units like Hinata, Raigh or Bartre.
- "I feel as if I had known you for ages." ExplanationWhen Leif procs a critical hit, he says this line prior to attacking. Due to being considered a Backup Unit (which makes his Adaptable skill grant +10 crit rate) and two of his Engage weapons being high-crit weapons (Killer Axe and Light Brand, the latter which he will permanently wield in the Arena once a unit reaches Bond level 15), this grants him a reasonably good chance of inflicting critical hits against your units in his paralogue and in the Arena. Combined with how unusual sounding the line is for a critical hit, fans tend to quip about Leif's line whenever he crits their units.
- "Get the FUCK back up!"ExplanationIf Alear is defeated in battle with an Emblem Ring, they will briefly despair at their death and beg them to get back up... except Ike, who flat-out DEMANDS Alear to get up, complete with using his angry portrait instead of a sad one like literally everyone else. Naturally, fans were quite taken to this contrast.
General Memes
- Fire Emblem: Engaged ExplanationMore than a few people noticed that rings summoning past Lords easily lends itself to marriage jokes. By extension, this leads to Fire Emblem: Married and Fire Emblem: Divorced jokes, which is referenced when people do a Self-Imposed Challenge that involves not using the rigs.
- Fire Emblem: Four Houses ExplanationElyos is described as four realms surrounding a holy land in the center, which is somewhat similar to Adrestia, Faerghus and Leicester surrounding the Church of Seiros in the previous game. And just like in the previous game, each realm is the home of one of the lord characters. This is not helped with Alfred and Fogado's resemblance to Dimitri and Claude, respectively.
- Be careful, Sigurd! Explanation (Spoilers!)Eagle eyed fans noted that in the mural, Micaiah, who normally uses light magic, is using fire magic... And her hand looks like it's going to set Sigurd on fire. Belhalla jokes began to run abound with people warning Sigurd to be careful.
- Stonks ExplanationWhen it was revealed that the player can invest money into allied countries for a number of benefits, fans started joking about Alear being a capitalist, and the game being a full-blown 4X strategy.
- Investing into bandits ExplanationAnd then said investments turned out to also increase the amount and strength of enemies on the world map. While it's beneficial for the player, Fridge Logic says that if investing in a country increases the number of bandits in it, then you must sponsor bandits to look heroic when you come around to stop them. Alternatively, Alear created a Cycle of Hurting against bandits. By investing in the allied countries there tends to be more prosperity, which then reveals the bandits out of the woodwork, which then you take down and then use that money for more investing until that part is finished and you then use the funds to buy and forge the weapons you bought to punish the bandits even further.
- This screenshot◊ of the ring polishing minigame featuring Sigurd with a surprised face had quickly spread online as a reaction image, usually to express concern or feel weirded out about something.
- Chain Attack Mood Whiplash Explanation (Spoilers!)Both Alcryst and Diamant get incredibly tragic and well-acted boss dialogue with Corrupted Morion in Chapter 10, Ivy and Hortensia against Corrupted Hyacinth in Chapter 17, and Alear against Corrupted Lumera in Chapter 25, but players trying to lower their health so the aforementioned characters can perform the Mercy Kill are liable to have a Chain Attacking unit Kill Steal, often with a hilariously unfitting one-liner. See here.
- Goku is my favorite Fire Emblem character! explanationA tweet posted by the official Fire Emblem Twitter account promoted the release of the prologue chapter of Engage's manga adaptation. One of the images the account posted in the same tweet is that of Saikyō Jump's March 2023 issue, which featured Goku of Dragon Ball fame and Male Alear as the most prominent characters featured on the cover. The fact that Goku himself is even present right next to Alear spurred jokes about Goku being a Fire Emblem character due to this. Considering that Body Arts are introduced in Engage, having the Martial Artist Stock Shōnen Hero in Fire Emblem isn't that far-fetched.
- Family Guy Death Posenote Many fans took notice of the way the in-battle deaths were animated on a vast majority of characters, notably with the character falling down with their back facing up. This led to fans comparing the animation to the death poses seen in Family Guy, which, funnily enough, are already memes in their own right.
- "The Fire Emblem" Explanation (MASSIVE SPOILER)Alear's second revival near the end of Chapter 22 turns them into an Emblem with the power of the 12 Emblems. Afterwards, Marth calls Alear by the titular MacGuffin. This line felt so sudden, obvious, and cheesy that fans started to mock it online, usually with them using the line unironically. Adding on to the hilarity of this line is that it's Title Dropped twice within a few seconds.
- Maybe the real Fire Emblem was the friends we made along the wayExplanation (MASSIVE SPOILER)Alear becoming the Fire Emblem spawned similar jokes, including people saying this as of the result of its cheesy execution.
- Sigurd says Among UsExplanation (MASSIVE SPOILER)After Alear's resurrection, while the Emblems comment about how they, as an Emblem, stood out from them i.e. having a corporeal body that Emblems normally lack, Sigurd says the following line: "Perhaps this is now why you seem unique among us.", which eventually led to fans joking that the last two words were a reference to the game of the same name. The fact that Zephia calls Alear the "Divine Impostor" in the preceding chapter, alongside this line being said the moment after the above mentioned double Title Drop doesn't help.
- Fell XenobladeExplanationThe name of the DLC campaign is called "Fell Xenologue", which spurred several jokes regarding Xenoblade Chronicles.
- "You didn't beat the game"ExplanationA common response on message boards arguing that using certain playstyles invalidates one beating the game. Used DLC emblems? Didn't beat the game. Got items by linking a Heroes account? Didn't beat the game. Fought in skirmishes? Didn't beat the game.
- AllyzonedExplanation In the English version, some S supports were rewritten to downplay romance. Not all did it gracefully, with the S supported character making grand declarations while referring to Alear as a friend or ally, making it come across as an Unusual Euphemism.
- The Zero Emblem's identityExplanation (Spoilers) The final chapter reveals Sombron was trying to reunite with the Zero Emblem, or Emblem of Foundations. It's left vague who or what this Emblem was, and fans have come up with several ideas both jokingly and seriously, the most common being Sommie and Shouzou Kaga. (the original creator of the series)
- Several memes are tied to the new food weapons found from the Ancient Well in the version 1.3.0. update:
- They killed Peony for a bowExplanationPeony's pigtails end in a flower, but fans jokingly compare her pigtails to croissants. When a croissant weapon named Croissbow was added to the game, it led some people to joke that the weapon was made out of Peony's pigtails.
- QUASO ExplanationA memetic and butchered pronunciation of "croissant", which was jokingly used to refer to the Croissbow.
- The Lollichop ExplanationAnother weapon that was added in this update is a lollipop axe called the Lollichop, which shares the name and concept of one of Pyro's weapons in TF2. Fans had a field day with this knowledge, such as joking about how the Pyro's true identity was Panette (whom was shown using the weapon in a tweet).
- Poop tomeExplanationA third weapon out of the set is the Tiramistorm. Though it's supposed to be chocolate, some fans jokingly compared the Tiramistorm's spell animation to a poop laser, and the fact that's it's colored brown like poop doesn't help it.
- Engage Manga Proportions ExplanationKyou Kazoru's artstyle for the game's Manga adaptation is mocked for having the characters be drawn with comically large bodies and tiny heads by contrast to that of the original game's, which led to some people drawing comparisons to Boucheron's head/body ratio. It also became largely infamous for making some female characters, most notably Chloé, look a lot more stacked than their game appearances, boasting larger chests than usual.
- The Potato Debate ExplanationEtie and Goldmary's C-support revolves around an argument where Etie accuses Goldmary of stealing her baked potato, while Goldmary argues that the potato was unclaimed and thus up for grabs. Fans would make mock debates about the conversation, often bringing up the infamous fan discourse regarding Three Houses's story and claiming that the debate is equally as controversial.
- Fell Xenologue:
- Evil X be like ExplanationFollowing the trailer of Wave 4 of the DLC, which reveals Evil Counterparts of the royal siblings, a resurgence of "Evil X be like", where people invert people/characters to an extent making them "evil" came up as many fans started to crank up jokes on what the evil versions of the other existing playable characters would be like, such as Chloé liking bland food and Pandreo going "meow" instead of the usual "arooo", or Timerra hating singing and being vegan. As it turns out, the last one, among many others turned out to be true much to the fanbase's surprise.
- Prior to the release of the Fell Xenologue, some fans jokingly compared its premise to two noteworthy Undertale Fanverses, Underswap and Underfell largely due to the fact that it features versions of the royals who have their personalities either made harsher, swapped around, or exaggerated to a high extreme.
- As Céline is already a Memetic Psychopath, it's often joked that her morality-flipped counterpart is nicer than her canon self, or that she hates tea and likes coffee instead. Or that she's suffering from caffeine withdrawal.
- Mauvier the universal constant Explanation (spoilers!) When it was officially revealed that the Fell Xenologue would feature parallel universe versions of the Four Hounds, all of them were shown to be Palette Swaps of the main universe Hounds with reversed personalities... except Mauvier, who is exactly the same as his main universe version. While this is likely due to him already being playable in the main story, many have joked that Mauvier is the same in every universe.
- Shiny MarniExplanationMadeline, the alternate Good Counterpart of Marni, wears the exact same armor as her, but with the maroon parts colored blue instead. Many players immediately joked that she was Marni's Shiny version, like a Pokémon.
- "Shut it, Bluey!" Explanation (spoilers!)Having Madeline fight her mainline counterpart Marni will trigger a unique battle conversation. This last line, used as an insult by Marni, sparked memes that turn Madeline into the titular dog.
- Gregory ExplanationThe alternate version of Griss being named this received mockery for being incredibly generic, not helped by how different Gregory is to him in terms of personality. Beyond that, the name has also given rise to several jokes in regards to him having the same name as Greg Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which is a Fountain of Memes by itself already, as well as the protagonist of Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach.
