Mother, please wake up... You promised you'd stay by my side... You have to... You have to keep your promise!
Engage may be Lighter and Softer in comparison to the previous mainline game, but remember, this is still Fire Emblem. Expect a few tears to be shed.

    Main Game
  • Alear breaking down in tears when their mother, Queen Lumera, is dying in their arms, pleading her to stay with them.
    • You find out much later that Queen Lumera is one of the few characters that helped Past Alear have a Heel–Face Turn. Not only has her death early on become worse, but you also have to defeat a Corrupted Lumera.
    • When you fight Corrupted Lumera, there are interactions for if you have Vander, Framme, and Clanne attack her... where she is practically encouraging them to kill her.
  • In the aftermath, Marth and Sigurd telling their own regrets at Lumera's death. Sigurd, who was her Emblem, recalls his own death and leaving his son an orphan. The regret in his voice is clear as day.
Marth: Lumera. I never thought our paths would diverge so soon.
Sigurd: Nor I. And to leave a child behind. I did that in death...a bitter memory.
    • Most of Sigurd's Bond conversations and his overall appearances in the story is a heartbreaking reminder that he's the only one of the 12 Emblems to have canonically died. One example of just how much regret he has over his death is exemplified by his A-Rank Bond conversation with Lapis.
Sigurd: I lost my most important battle, and left my son Seliph behind. I had so much to teach him...
Lapis: That sounds so hard–for you and for your son. War causes so much pain and suffering...
Sigurd: Any battle might be your last. If you have words to share with someone, never hesitate to do so.
Lapis: Yeah... You might not get another chance, huh? Thank you, Sigurd. That's an important lesson.
  • Chapter 10 and its aftermath. Not only does Alear's party fail to save King Morion, but Veyle also arrives and reveals herself as the Fell Princess who is Sombron's daughter and Lumera's murderer, Sombron is revived and consumes King Hyacinth which devastates Hortensia (more details on her Trauma Conga Line further down this page), and Veyle and Sombron steal the Ring Emblems you gathered and corrupt them right in front of your eyes. By that point, Alear gets hit with a huge Heroic BSoD and nearly crosses the Despair Event Horizon.
    • Both Diamant and Alcryst's special boss dialogue with Corrupted Morion is painful, and both their voice actors really sell the emotion.
    • Hortensia is one of the stage bosses - and when you fight her, she shouts, "You took my sister from me! I'll never forgive you!". But if she fights Alear, it's even worse. Alear tries to talk her down only for Hortensia to not believe them.
    • Chapter 11? All the Ring Emblems you gathered are used against you, and when you defeat an Emblem user, Veyle smugly steals them back and immediately equips them to another Corrupted enemy. It isn't until Ivy and her retainers arrive and give them two Ring Emblems (Lucina and Lyn) and the Time Crystal to help that Alear gains a sense of hope.
  • The reason why Marni desires praise from Zephia so much stems from her mother never praising her accomplishments and abandoning her at a church because her mother had several sons and didn’t want a daughter. This is already pretty tragic, but in Chapter 21, after getting punished by Zephia for stealing and losing two of the Emblem rings and hearing about Veyle’s past, Marni starts to question her place as a member of the Four Hounds. Once she sees Veyle corrupted by the crown Zephia forced upon her, Marni tries to destroy the crown, but she seemingly fails to do so. Then, while she’s knocked down on her knees and feeling useless from seemingly failing to save Veyle, Zephia stabs her on the spot, dismissing her as a disobedient child. She dies in Mauvier's arms, still wishing that Veyle would return to her old self. This moment is what causes Mauvier to completely snap with pure rage and join Alear's side on the spot, swearing to kill Zephia for her crimes.
Mauvier: I will never stand by you again, Zephia. Save for the moment my blade PIERCES YOUR HEART!
  • Veyle’s split personality causes her to forget every crime her other self committed. When the truth is revealed, Veyle is horrified at what she has done.
Alear: How dare she...? After all she's done, how dare she act like nothing's wrong...?!
  • Alfred, the Crown Prince of Firene and one of your closest allies, is revealed to be Secretly Dying. And unless you manage to S-Support him, the epilogue reveals that he died not too long after he became king.
    • To further rub salt in the wound, his little sister Céline (and presumably his mother Éve) is the only one who knows his childhood condition was not truly cured, and her support with Alcryst reveals that she is plagued with nightmares of Alfred's death, and those nightmares eventually came true.
    • It gets even worse in Alfred and Céline’s A Support, where we learn that Alfred’s childhood illness had been in remission for years thanks to all of his physical training, only to flare up again out of nowhere. In a clearly pained voice, Alfred begs Céline to keep his condition a secret from the Divine Dragon and their allies, not wanting them to think he’s weak or to worry about him.
    • Alternatively, their A Support would normally come after they have been adventuring for some time and are fully committed to their mission. Alfred, who understands the kind of altruistic people his allies are, especially Alear, knows they would drop everything just to help him out, something Alfred knows they can't afford to do if they hope to save their world.
    • Céline's tea drinking obsession takes on an awful new light with the reveal of Alfred's condition. It's heavily implied her tea drinking is a coping mechanism to take her mind off the stress of Alfred's inevitable death and her rise to the throne as queen, and her B-support with Louis has her storm off after hearing that Louis got himself hurt just to get her a special blend, because she can't bear the thought of someone dying because of her way to cope with her pain.
  • Chapter 19 has Alear's group sailing into Givre Port, a formerly bustling Elusian port town that is instead plagued with Corrupted and miasma. While Alfred and Timerra want to defeat them and try to help the survivors, Alear and Ivy immediately realize there aren't any due to it having been ravaged a long time ago unlike Florra and decide to keep moving (or they would've had Marni and Mauvier not intercepted them), evidenced by the Corrupted-inhabited visitable houses scattered throughout the map. Talking to the other group members after the battle has many of them discussing how the town is just another example of the pain and suffering brought by Sombron and his followers, while Rosado mentions having a friend that owned a fruit stall here who is very most likely dead by this point.
  • Chapters 21-22 is filled with these.
    • Alear dies saving Veyle from Sombron at the end of Chapter 21. This isn't an "Only Mostly Dead" moment like Robin in Awakening's Golden Ending or Corrin at the end of Birthright and Conquest, they are COMPLETELY dead. And then Sombron uses the Emblem Rings to be granted unlimited power, the cracked mind control helmet Veyle reactivated, causing her evil split personality to take complete control over her and seemingly eradicate her original personality for good, seeming making Alear's Taking the Bullet moment a Senseless Sacrifice in which they have seemingly died for nothing!
    • The flashback at the beginning of Chapter 22, of the last moments before Alear went into a thousand-year slumber. They seemingly succeed in striking down Sombron just in time for Lumera to find them, they tell her he's gone and the war is over—and then Sombron fires a beam of dark energy through their chest. Their following exchange is all through tears.
Past Alear: I guess Fell Dragons have to die in the end...but I wanted to be...a good dragon.
Lumera: And you will! Someday life will return to you. And when that beautiful day should dawn, I will give you a birthday gift that suits you perfectly.
Past Alear: Thank you, mother...If I see that day...maybe I'll return...dressed in white...a gleaming sword at my side. A Divine Dragon like you...ready to save the world.
    • Doubles as a CMOH when you think about the intro. While the sword was given a little later, guess who woke up dressed in a white version of their outfit?
    • After Veyle's Corrupted magic keeping Alear "alive" the first time gives out and they collapse again, they straight up break down weeping about how much they don't want to die, how they want to continue fighting for the promise they made Lumera, and how they just want to see their friends again, but now, all they can see is darkness. Thankfully, the Emblems come to the rescue, as the last minute intervention of the 12 Rings allows them to come back to life as a living breathing Emblem.
  • Not even someone as wicked and cruel as Zephia is spared from a tragic story. She always wanted to have a real family of her own with Sombron, but was deprived the chance as Sombron told her he would decide after the war was over, and she eventually utterly loathed Sombron for it. She genuinely saw the Four Hounds as a family, but many years of witnessing Sombron killing his kin over and over again traumatized her into not bothering to remember their names, since they would inevitably die anyway, twisting her view on what really makes a family and what love was. Then Griss reveals that ever since Zephia took him in, he has always seen her as a mother, a big sister, and even a goddess, declaring that she truly is family to him. This makes Zephia realize that her wish for a true family was staring her right in the face and she never noticed it until she and Griss were already dying. Her last words are to apologize to Griss for never realizing their bond until now, and Griss eventually slumps over dead too, holding her hand.
  • When Alear is killed in battle, the Emblem they're currently equipped with will react with horror, begging them to get back up (well, except Ike, who less begs and more demands them to get back up). Lucina and Byleth's lines in particular hit extra hard with their anguished tone, considering what they've been through.
Marth: No! I promised I would fight by your side until the very end. Don't die, Alear!
Celica: I can't believe this happened while I was with you. No, Alear...
Sigurd: I swore to Lumera to protect you. You must not fall, Alear.
    Leif: Open your eyes, Alear!
Roy: Please, stand up! Fight! The battle isn't over, Alear!
Lyn: No! This is impossible! We can't lose you, Alear!
Eirika: Please, don't leave us! Don't die here, Alear!
Micaiah: You musn't fall here. You are still needed! If only I could take your place, Alear...
Lucina: There's no future without you! Don't go, Alear!
Corrin: Please, no. You're supposed to walk this path with us to the end, Alear!
Byleth: I'm so sorry. I couldn't protect you, Alear...
Ike: If we lose you, then we've lost this battle! On your feet, Alear!
  • Even the absolutely precious and adorable critter Sommie has an unexpected sad moment when you read its notebook entry, where its only recorded dislike (aside from onions, eggs, and nuts when you feed it) is "how everyone it's ever known goes away eventually".
  • Goldmary and Yunaka's support chain gives a good idea of how much emotional baggage the latter has. Yunaka admits that doing chores brings back bad memories of her guardian, who made her do all of the housework when she was young in addition to the much more unsavory missions she doesn't mention here. She admits to having trouble controlling her emotions at times like that.
  • In Alear's A-Support with Veyle she resolves that she must defeat Sombron, that being said it's easy to see that she still holds affection for him as she calls him 'Papa' and says that because he is her father she doesn't have it in her heart to fully hate him.
  • Soren's bond conversations with Veyle are far more somber than usual and feature none of his typical bluntness or snark, as he's implied to sympathize with her situation. And while he isn't aware of it, players who know Soren's full history will realize he and Veyle are very similar: both are offspring of the Big Bad, had abusive caregivers, and wandered the world alone for years ostracized by everyone they met.
Veyle: Sometimes, when I think of my father, I get sad. I’m sorry if that’s impacted my fighting.
Soren: I wonder which is better─to have parents who cause you stress, or to have no parents at all.
  • After the Victory of the Final Battle because the portals to other worlds close, all the Emblems disappear due to the resulting dimensional distortions destroying their spiritual bodies, leaving the Rings useless with exception of Alear's Ring as they have a physical form to anchor to. Alear is the sole Emblem of Elyos after the Final Battle. Granted, after The Stinger we see the Rings glowing afterwards, but we don't know specifically what this means for when or if the Emblems will be restored.
  • During the ending for the game, most of the images seen are that of characters (if they survive throughout the story) showing what they are doing in the near-future after the defeat of Sombron. Most of them are generally hopeful and positive, showcasing how through the Fell Dragon's death, Elyos is heading into a brighter future. Not so much for Hortensia, however, as her image is that of a quiet Grave-Marking Scene for her late father Hyacinth. Unlike everyone else, her image carries a somber tone to it, as it's a sad reminder that Hyacinth was once a good person who fell victim to Sombron's corruption. Hortensia wanted nothing more than to gain his approval as he genuinely loved her after his change, but now that he's dead, she'll never get any further chances. Thankfully, it turns into a heartwarming moment when the next image has Rosado and Goldmary coming over to pay their own respects to the late king and comfort their friend at the same time.
    • Hell, the entirety of Hortensia's time in the story is one big Trauma Conga Line for her. At the age of seven, her mother died and left her all alone to fend for herself in Elusia's cutthroat politics, which already served as a poor start to what she would eventually go through in the game proper. She did make friends with her retainers, Rosado and Goldmary, at her academy, so everything's going to be okay, right? Wrong. She yearned for Hyacinth's approval despite knowing that something was wrong with him, believed that Ivy was dead following her suicide mission against Alear, helplessly watched her father get eaten by Sombron to restore his power (while evil Veyle openly laughed about his death), attempted to murder Queen Seforia despite not having the will to actually do it, and then gets Brainwashed and Crazy by Zephia into fighting her still-alive sister Ivy against her will. And to top it all off, some of her supports, such as with Rosado, reveal that she is broken about everything she has experienced throughout the war, but still tries to maintain her happy-go-lucky façade so she wouldn't worry her friends. The poor girl is, while she often masks it behind her usual attitude, Innocence Lost incarnate and the Linde of Engage.
Hortensia: I can't, Rosado. I can't dwell on the academy. I don't get to do that anymore. I'm a princess, and that means I keep smiling. All the time. Forever.
    • Her bond conversations with Byleth, her associated Emblem, also carry some sadness to them, as Hortensia still feels guilt over using him as a Dark Emblem during her Darkest Hour and the time she was brainwashed by Zephia. Although Byleth helps her move on from the event by the time of their A-Rank Bond Conversation, it's saddening to see how the pain still persists deep in Hortensia's heart. Fridge sadness comes to play as Byleth during the war arc of Three Houses shows that he would have had to fight and slay his former students, and in his case, no one was brainwashed.
Hortensia: I hate that I fought against everyone here. But the worst thought is... what if I had won?
Byleth: There's no use worrying about what could have been. It's in the past now. Look to the future.
    • Similarly, Hortensia is still incredibly guilty over having threatened to kill Queen Seforia. After a skirmish in Solm Palace, Hortensia says she still can't face Seforia, but owes her another apology once the war is over.
  • One of Ivy's selection quotes while on low HP is "Only what I deserve."
  • If a unit dies in battle, you can often hear another mourning their death in the aftermath. Some standouts include:
    • If Hortensia dies, Ivy is so devastated that she is Unable to Cry.
    • While Ivy is distant toward her retainers, due in part to not fully trusting them, she laments their deaths and regrets not appreciating them more. If both of them die, she vows to never take another retainer.
    • If Panette dies, Pandreo is struck by a Crisis of Faith and is unable to pray for his sister's soul.
    • If Alcryst dies, Citrinne, who's always feared she became his retainer through family connections rather than merit, blames herself for not being stronger.

    Fell Xenologue
  • The Fell Xenologue timeline is rife with this, given the premise. In this Mirror Universe, the Divine Dragons died after Sombron was sealed, and the war that broke out after his return was so fierce that the rulers of each country (bar Hyacinth) were killed and Alear had to resort to a Mutual Kill in order to take him out for good. This also led to the four nations of Elyos growing harsher; by the present day, they're locked in a cold war over the Emblem Bracelets.
  • Poor Alternate Alfred. It's clear that losing his mother, his retainers and Alear in the war against Sombron took a very heavy toll on him, and he's clearly struggling with the burdens of being king at a relatively young age and largely obeys the whims of his warmongering sister. His death quote really says it all:
  • The relationship of the Brodian royal siblings. Although Alternate Diamant is King of Brodia (which is already a tearjerker since it means Morion is also dead in this timeline), he's so meek and weak-willed that Alternate Alcryst hates his guts, and if you have Alcryst fight Alternate Diamant, he'll bemoan how his younger brother finally decided now was the time to kill him and never accepted him as king.
  • If you have Fogado fight Alternate Timerra, you'll get this conversation. Good luck not feeling like total shit afterward:
Alternate Timerra: This place reeks of the dead... That must be why I'm seeing phantoms. It's been so long, Fogado. All I want to do is run up and embrace you. What a shameful impulse. I am a queen.
Fogado: You're a queen, yes, but you're also human. Go ahead and have a good cry. We can hold off on fighting 'till you're done. What do you say?
Alternate Timerra: No... I don't need to cry. And I certainly don't need to be comforted by a ghost. If you really want to make me feel better, you'll disappear.
Fogado: I figured you'd say something like that.
    • The inverse of this conversation makes this even sadder, as for how much Alternate Timerra loves her brother, Alternate Fogado does not reciprocate the feelings. At all.
  • In the fourth chapter of the Xenologue, Nel tells Alear that the royals they've fought and all their soldiers weren't actually alive. They were all Corrupted. Remember what happened to King Morion and Hyacinth, and later Lumera in the main timeline?
  • As expected, Madeline's supports with Mauvier are incredibly bittersweet. Not only does Mauvier see so much of Marni in Madeline, but Madeline herself turns out to be in a similar mindset, as she's revealed to still be reeling from her own Mauvier's sacrifice to save her and the rest of the Winds.
    • Speaking of Mauvier, all three of the Winds' supports with him have an air of sorrow to them, as they all carry immense guilt over their Mauvier sacrificing himself to save them. Zelestia and Gregory outright break down crying as they apologize for not being able to save him.
  • The supports between the Winds and Veyle don't start them off on the right foot, mainly due to Veyle's perception of their counterparts. She knows it's not fair to compare them to their Hounds counterpart but the resemblance is far too uncanny. Fortunately, as she gets to know them better, they turn into genuine friends by the end.
  • Most of the Alternate Royals fighting against their retainers are painful, as it is revealed through these conversations that the Alternate retainers have all either sacrificed themselves to protect their lieges or disappeared altogether. Many of them express regret at failing to keep their retainers and reluctance to fight, and the retainers themselves are not happy about fighting the alternate versions of their lieges. Not only that, but the reveal of all the royals being Corrupted anyway, makes all the Alternate retainers' been for nothing.
    • Alternate Alfred tells Etie that he could not look at the flowers he left in her memory as it was too hard, and tells Boucheron that he was a dear friend.
    • Alternate Céline has a brief Hope Spot seeing Chloe but comes to realize that the Chloe she is fighting is not hers and that the Alternate Chloe never returned from her mission, something she wishes she did not have to find out from the battle. Her conversation with Louis outright has her admitting she does not remember her happiness from the past and unable to drink Louis's tea since he died.
    • As much of a Jerkass Alternate Alcryst is, he did deeply care about his retainers, feeling that he failed to protect them and believes he should have died instead.
    • Alternate Diamant asks Jade in despair about why she didn't wake and breaks down laughing seeing Amber, with Amber apologizing for making him sad.
    • Kagetsu tries to make an offer of friendship to Alternate Ivy only for her to rebuke it as being fake, but wondering why someone who despised her so would sacrifice his life. Alternate Ivy meanwhile is overjoyed at seeing Zelkov again but then decides to kill him after he turns down joining her out of disgust towards her behavior, with Zelkov declaring that he'll have no regrets striking her down because of it.
    • Alternate Timerra expresses grief over seeing Merrin and Panette whom she thinks are her deceased retainers revived as Corrupted to fight for Elusia, promising to return them to death. Merrin and Panette meanwhile are reluctant to fight her and try to comfort her in their own ways, only for them to fail due to theirs and Alternate Timerra's personalities and interests being the opposite of their respective counterparts.
    • Despite his usual demeanor, Alternate Fogado is genuinely pleased to see Pandreo and Bunet, with his somber tone as he describes how both of his retainers were killed right in front of him making it clear that he truly cherished them as his friends. Pandreo and Bunet's disdain from this is only heightened by their knowledge that the Fogado before them is a Corrupted, deciding that striking him down is the best thing they can do for him at this point.
    • Both Alternate Diamant and Alcryst are in shock over seeing Saphir and question why she would be fighting against them, but then remember that the Alternate Saphir died protecting King Morion. Alternate Diamant mentions himself always imagining Alternate Saphir whenever he stands on the battlefield, implying that her death hit him as hard as what his retainers' did.
    • Lindon can't help but feel put off by both Alternate Ivy and Hortensia, declaring the former's actions inexcusable and something the Alternate Lindon would've wanted no part of while failing to befriend the latter with cute-looking sweets he baked himself.
    • Etie and Alternate Céline both find it difficult to build up the resolve to fight each other due to their friendship with their respective counterparts and despite Alternate Céline believing Etie to be a Corrupted, with the two choosing to do things quickly before either of them actually decides against it.
    • Alternate Diamant is taken aback upon seeing Citrinne as her alternate self died protecting Alternate Alcryst. While Citrinne expresses the desire to hear more about her counterpart, she buries it by wanting to be thought of as an apparition, although that doesn't stop Alternate Diamant from thinking back to happier times involving the two of them.
  • Hortensia in the Fell Xenologue timeline is much worse off than her main timeline self. Her cuteness focus, facade though it may have been, is gone - replaced by a meek, miserable demeanor. Her situation is far worse, too - Alternate Ivy hates her, verbally abusing her at every chance and refusing to allow Hortensia to call her by name. To make it worse, if you have Ivy fight Alternate Hortensia, she reveals that Alternate Ivy's already executed all their other siblings, and Hortensia thinks she's next. Every single one of her fight conversations is disheartening, and overall paint the picture of a thoroughly broken fourteen-year-old girl. And then Nel Mercy Kills her because she was a Corrupted.
    • The part about Alternate Ivy refusing her to call her by name is arguably even worse in the original Japanese, in which Hortensia calls Ivy "Onee-sama," a highly respectful form of address for an older sister. Alternate Ivy essentially disowned Alternate Hortensia as a sister.
    • Her conversation with Goldmary indicates that Alternate Ivy's reign of terror has thoroughly demoralized not just Hortensia, but a good portion of Elusia as a whole. Hortensia can barely recognize the confident and elegant Goldmary in front of her - the Goldmary she knew never wanted to draw attention to herself, nor would (implicitly) the Rosado she knew.
Alternate Hortensia: It was easier to survive that way... or so we thought.
    • Her conversation with Rosado outright states that losing both her retainers was a Despair Event Horizon for her and that she would have been happier dying with him. Rosado replies back that the best he can do is send her to join her Rosado.
  • The final battle of the Fell Xenologue takes place at the Alternate Somniel, which is nothing more than a sad, fallen, and destroyed island compared to its lively main counterpart. It's especially haunting to consider that Sommie, the adorable guardian spirit of the Somniel, is nowhere to be seen nor is it mentioned at all. Considering that the Somniel has fallen with no one left to visit or maintain it, it's heartbreaking to think of Sommie's fate, if it's still alive somewhere due to its immortality or if it outright departed the alternate world with everyone it ever knew truly gone for good and no one else left to befriend it.
  • The final battle finishes not with a triumph, but even more despair. Instead of delivering the final blow to Nil, Nel instead stabs herself which kills her, her dragonstone shattering like Alear's did in chapter 20 to confirm that they have truly passed away. Nil, now going by his real name Rafal, shares his backstory, in which he replaced the real Nil who had died in battle, only to replace him since they looked alike, and because they were so young, Nel wouldn't know the difference, but Nel knew the whole time that Rafal had traded lives with her late brother, but still treated Rafal as her brother. As she lays dying, they find that a spell was cast on Nel's dragonstone that caused him to attempt to continue Sombron's legacy, but Rafal states that it was still him making those decisions, and it cost him the person he loved the most. Fortunately, Alear was able to give Rafal a solution to saving Nel by having him share his life energy to replenish hers, much like how Lumera shared hers with Alear. It would take a thousand years to do so, but it would end up saving Nel's life. Rafal promised that if it was successful, they would move to Alear's world, which they do.
    • The final battle also has the eight corrupted royals coming back for round two. Alternate Ivy has her Heel Realization (including towards her treatment of Hortensia), Alfred is practically Laughing Mad from despair, and when Timerra is defeated, she says "Finally mom... I'm coming home!". The way their English voice actors say the lines has made many say that it's even more powerful.
  • At the end of the Xenologue, all of the surviving characters hop to the main universe as the Alternative Elyos is, for all intents and purposes, dead. The surviving Winds are clearly unhappy that they have to do this and feel as if they are abandoning everyone, especially Mauvier. But as they acknowledge, their world is too far gone and staying there would just be waiting for their own end.
    • The worst part? Alternate Alear knows their world is beyond saving - they don't bring their counterpart there with the goal of saving the world, but simply to get their last remaining allies out of there before they die too (which Mauvier sadly does).
  • If you finish the Fell Xenologue and have the Four Winds fight their main timeline counterparts, they each are shocked to find that they are not just far different from themselves, but that they are also siding with Sombron, the evil that destroyed their world. Each has something to say to their counterpart, but all are disturbed by their differences; Madeline finds Marni's need for approval a recipe for disaster but is jealous that she still gets to spend time with her world's Mauvier, Gregory is greatly disturbed by Griss's indulgence in pain and outright refuses to partake in his desires, and Zelestia is haunted by saying that her counterpart would be siding with Alear only to find out Zephia is in service to Sombron instead.
